A week after their first meeting, Atlas received another message from Elena.
It was only one sentence.
Lily asked when you were coming back.
Atlas read it several times.
Then he closed his eyes.
For six months, he had prepared himself to accept whatever distance Elena demanded.
He had expected silence.
He had expected rejection.
He had never expected his daughter to ask for him.
He replied carefully.
Whenever your mother says it is okay.
A few minutes later, Elena answered.
Sunday.
Atlas stared at the word.
Sunday.
It was the smallest permission imaginable.
But to him, it felt like the beginning of a second life.
...
On Sunday morning, Atlas arrived carrying a small wooden box.
He had spent the entire night deciding what to put inside.
He finally chose a collection of simple things.
A silver wolf pendant.
A small picture book about the mountains.
And a tiny carved wolf that he had made himself.
He hadn't bought it.
He had carved it with his own hands because Lily had once told him that she liked wolves.
When Elena opened the door, she saw the box in his hands.
“What's that?”
“Something for Lily.”
Elena looked at the box.
“You can give it to her yourself.”
Atlas nodded.
Inside the living room, Lily was sitting on the floor surrounded by wooden toys.
The moment she saw Atlas, she jumped to her feet.
“Daddy!”
Atlas froze.
The word still had the power to break through every wall he had built around himself.
Lily ran toward him.
This time, he knelt before she reached him.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
Atlas gently held her.
“I missed you too.”
Elena stood nearby, watching carefully.
She could see how hard he was trying not to overstep.
He didn't ask Lily to call him anything.
He didn't tell her he was her father.
He didn't make promises he couldn't keep.
He simply stayed where Elena allowed him to stay.
...
Lily opened the wooden box.
Her eyes widened when she saw the carved wolf.
“Did you make this?”
Atlas nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He thought about the question.
“Because I wanted you to have something made especially for you.”
Lily hugged the little wolf to her chest.
“It's Snow.”
Atlas smiled.
“Then Snow belongs to you now.”
Lily looked delighted.
Elena watched silently.
There was something different about Atlas now.
He wasn't trying to win her.
He wasn't trying to prove he was still an Alpha.
He was simply trying to become someone Lily could trust.
...
Later that afternoon, Lily fell asleep on the couch.
Atlas sat quietly beside her.
Elena entered the room carrying a blanket.
“She usually sleeps for an hour.”
Atlas nodded.
“I'll leave before she wakes.”
Elena stopped.
“You don't have to.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“You can stay until she wakes.”
For a moment, Atlas didn't move.
Then he sat back down.
Neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't comfortable.
But it wasn't hostile anymore either.
After several minutes, Elena finally spoke.
“I need you to understand something.”
Atlas turned toward her.
“Lily is not a way back into my life.”
“I know.”
“She isn't a bridge between us.”
“I know.”
“And if you ever use her to pressure me, I'll stop the visits.”
Atlas's expression became serious.
“I would never do that.”
Elena looked at him for a long moment.
“You said that before.”
The words hurt.
But Atlas didn't defend himself.
“Then don't believe my words.”
Elena's eyes flickered.
“Watch what I do instead.”
...
That evening, Lily woke up just before Atlas was about to leave.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes.
“Daddy?”
Atlas turned.
“I'm here.”
She held up the carved wolf.
“Can Snow sleep with me?”
Atlas smiled.
“Of course.”
Lily climbed back beneath the blanket.
Then she looked at him seriously.
“Will you come next Sunday too?”
Atlas looked toward Elena.
She nodded once.
“Yes,” he said.
“I'll come next Sunday.”
Lily smiled.
“Promise?”
Atlas hesitated.
He had made too many promises in his life.
Promises he had broken.
Promises that had meant nothing when the moment came to honor them.
So he answered differently.
“I'll do everything I can to be here.”
Lily seemed satisfied.
“Okay.”
She closed her eyes.
Atlas stood beside her for a few seconds before leaving.
At the doorway, Elena stopped him.
“You did well today.”
Atlas looked at her.
It was the first praise she had given him since leaving Blackwood.
He didn't smile.
He simply nodded.
“Thank you.”
...
After Atlas left, Elena returned to the living room.
She found Lily sleeping peacefully with the carved wolf tucked beneath her chin.
Elena sat beside her daughter.
For the first time, she wasn't afraid of Lily loving her father.
She understood that Lily's love for Atlas didn't diminish the love between mother and daughter.
What mattered was that Lily would never have to choose between them.
And if Atlas truly wanted to remain in her life, he would have to keep earning the privilege.
...
Across the territory, Atlas returned to his temporary residence near the Pine Ridge border.
He placed the silver pendant on the table.
He had intended to give it to Lily.
But he had changed his mind.
It was too much.
Too soon.
He would wait.
Everything would happen at Lily's pace.
For once, Atlas was learning that love did not mean taking what you wanted.
Sometimes it meant standing outside the door.
Waiting quietly.
And proving, day after day, that you deserved to be invited inside.
