Three months passed after Atlas's first visit to Pine Ridge.
He never missed a scheduled visit with Lily.
He never arrived without Elena's permission.
He never used the pack link to reach Elena.
And most importantly, he never tried to force his way back into their lives.
Every time he came to Pine Ridge, he brought something small for Lily.
A wooden wolf.
A book about the northern mountains.
A little silver bracelet engraved with her initials.
But he never brought expensive gifts.
Elena noticed that.
Atlas was finally learning that love couldn't be purchased.
...
One afternoon, Lily ran across the garden toward Atlas.
“Daddy!”
Atlas immediately crouched down.
Lily threw her arms around his neck.
He hugged her carefully.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you too.”
Lily pulled back and looked at him seriously.
“Are you staying longer today?”
Atlas smiled.
“If your mother says it's okay.”
Lily turned toward Elena.
“Mama?”
Elena folded her arms.
“Until dinner.”
Lily cheered.
Atlas laughed.
For a moment, the garden felt almost like an ordinary family home.
Almost.
...
Later that afternoon, Elena found Atlas sitting beside Lily near the pond.
Lily was teaching him how to braid flowers into a crown.
Atlas's fingers were completely hopeless.
“You're doing it wrong,” Lily complained.
“I'm trying.”
“Daddy, you're supposed to cross this one over that one.”
Atlas followed her instructions.
The flower crown finally held together.
Lily placed it on his head.
She burst into laughter.
Atlas looked ridiculous.
Elena couldn't stop a small smile from appearing.
Atlas noticed.
Their eyes met.
Neither of them spoke.
The smile disappeared from Elena's face.
But something had changed.
She no longer felt only anger when she looked at him.
There was still pain.
There were wounds that time alone couldn't erase.
But there was also something quieter now.
Acceptance.
...
That evening, Atlas asked Elena to speak with him privately.
They stood beneath the oak tree while Lily played nearby with a guard.
Atlas looked nervous.
Elena had never seen him look nervous before.
“What is it?” she asked.
Atlas took a slow breath.
“I want to tell you something without asking for anything in return.”
Elena said nothing.
“I've spent the last three months trying to understand what I did to you.”
His voice was low.
“I used to think my biggest mistake was choosing Mara when you asked me to choose.”
Elena's expression remained still.
“But that wasn't my biggest mistake.”
Atlas looked directly at her.
“My biggest mistake was believing that loving you gave me the right to hurt you.”
Elena's fingers tightened around her sleeve.
“It didn't.”
Atlas shook his head.
“Nothing gave me that right.”
He continued.
“Not my position as Alpha. Not our mate bond. Not Rowan's last request. Not Mara's condition. Nothing.”
For the first time, Elena heard no excuse in his voice.
Only regret.
“I failed you when you needed me most.”
He swallowed.
“And I failed our daughter before I even knew she had survived.”
Elena looked away.
“You don't have to forgive me.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to take me back.”
“I know.”
“And I won't ask you to.”
Silence settled between them.
Then Atlas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“What's that?”
“My resignation.”
Elena stared at him.
“From what?”
“The Blackwood Alpha position.”
Her eyes widened.
“Atlas.”
“I've already submitted it to the elders.”
He looked toward Lily.
“I spent years believing the pack needed me more than anyone else did.”
He gave a faint, bitter smile.
“I was wrong.”
Elena stared at the envelope.
“What will you do?”
“I don't know yet.”
Then he looked back at her.
“For once, I'm not making a decision because everyone expects it from me.”
He paused.
“I'm making it because I want to become someone Lily can be proud of.”
...
Elena didn't know what to say.
She had spent years imagining Atlas begging her to return.
She had expected promises.
Grand gestures.
Declarations.
She had never expected him to give up the position he had once valued above everything.
“You don't have to do this for me,” she said quietly.
“I'm not doing it for you.”
Atlas's gaze softened.
“I'm doing it because I should have done it long ago.”
A small voice interrupted them.
“Mama?”
They turned.
Lily was standing several feet away.
“Are you fighting?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Lily looked between them.
Then she smiled.
“Good.”
She ran back toward the pond.
Atlas watched her go.
A quiet smile touched his face.
...
That night, after Atlas left, Elena sat alone beside Lily's bed.
Her daughter was already asleep.
The little silver bracelet Atlas had given her rested beside the pillow.
Elena picked it up.
For years, she had believed leaving Atlas meant closing every door forever.
Now she understood that leaving had only meant choosing herself.
What happened afterward was different.
She could allow Lily to know her father without becoming his mate again.
She could acknowledge his change without forgetting his past.
She could forgive him someday without giving him the right to hurt her again.
That distinction gave her peace.
...
The next morning, a messenger from Blackwood arrived at the Pine Ridge border.
He carried an official document.
The elders had accepted Atlas's resignation.
His Alpha title would end at the next full moon.
Elena read the document twice.
Then she folded it carefully.
She didn't feel victorious.
She didn't feel guilty either.
She simply felt calm.
Outside, Lily was running through the garden.
A large silver-gray wolf watched her from beyond the fence.
Lily spotted him and immediately ran toward the gate.
“Snow!”
The wolf's tail wagged.
Elena stood in the doorway and watched.
Atlas had kept his promise.
He hadn't demanded his old place back.
He had earned a new one.
Not as her Alpha.
Not as her mate.
But as Lily's father.
And perhaps that was the first promise he had ever made that truly mattered.
