Three weeks passed after Atlas’s first visit to Pine Ridge.
He did not ask Elena to take him back.
He did not demand recognition from Lily.
And most importantly, he did not try to force his way into their lives.
Instead, he kept every promise he had made.
Every Saturday morning, he sent Lily a small package.
Sometimes it contained a wooden animal.
Sometimes it was a book about wolves.
Once, it was a tiny silver bracelet engraved with the words: Little Star.
Atlas never sent anything expensive.
Elena understood why.
He wasn't trying to buy his daughter's affection.
He was trying to give her something he had once failed to give her mother.
Consistency.
...
One Saturday afternoon, Lily was sitting on the living-room floor when a Pine Ridge guard delivered another package.
She immediately recognized the handwriting.
“Daddy sent something!”
Elena looked up from the documents on her desk.
“You can open it.”
Lily tore the wrapping paper carefully.
Inside was a small wooden wolf carved from dark cedar.
There was also a handwritten note.
Lily held it up.
“Mama, read it.”
Elena took the paper.
The message was short.
“Lily, Snow found this piece of cedar near the northern mountains. I thought you might like it. Take care of Mama for me. —Atlas.”
Elena stared at the final sentence for several seconds.
He hadn't written that he missed her.
He hadn't asked Elena to forgive him.
He hadn't even mentioned himself.
He had simply asked their daughter to take care of her mother.
Lily hugged the wooden wolf.
“I love it.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“Then you should thank him.”
Lily immediately grabbed a sheet of paper.
She drew a picture of herself standing beside a giant gray wolf.
Then she added Elena between them.
At the bottom, in uneven letters, she wrote three words.
My family.
...
That evening, Atlas received the drawing.
He was sitting alone in his office when the guard placed it on his desk.
Atlas picked it up.
His eyes immediately settled on the three figures.
For several moments, he couldn't breathe.
His wolf stirred beneath his skin.
Not with the old instinct to possess.
With something quieter.
Something almost like gratitude.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.”
One of the elders entered.
“Alpha, the council meeting is tomorrow.”
Atlas folded the drawing carefully and placed it inside his desk.
“I won't be attending.”
The elder frowned.
“The Alpha cannot simply ignore a council meeting.”
“Then choose someone else to represent me.”
“Atlas, Blackwood still needs its Alpha.”
He looked toward the window.
For years, he had believed his position was the most important thing in his life.
Now he understood that leadership meant nothing if he couldn't even protect the people he loved from himself.
“I will attend the meetings that concern the pack.”
He paused.
“But I will no longer allow the council to decide who deserves my loyalty.”
The elder studied him carefully.
“Are you talking about Elena?”
Atlas's expression hardened.
“I'm talking about my choices.”
...
The next morning, Atlas traveled to Pine Ridge.
This time, he didn't arrive with guards.
He didn't bring gifts.
He didn't even ask to see Lily.
He simply stood outside the territory boundary and waited.
Elena eventually came out.
She stopped several feet away.
“Why are you here?”
Atlas looked at her.
“I wanted to tell you something in person.”
She crossed her arms.
“I'm listening.”
He took a slow breath.
“I spoke to the elders yesterday.”
Elena remained silent.
“I formally withdrew every claim I made against you after the bond dissolution.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I will never use my Alpha authority, the Registry, or our former bond to interfere with your life.”
Elena studied his face.
“And Lily?”
“I will never take her from you.”
His voice remained steady.
“If she wants me in her life, I'll be there. If one day she doesn't, I'll respect that too.”
Elena hadn't expected that answer.
Atlas lowered his gaze.
“I spent years thinking love meant refusing to let someone leave.”
He looked back at her.
“You taught me that sometimes love means giving someone the freedom to walk away.”
Elena's fingers tightened around the edge of her coat.
“You learned that too late.”
“I know.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You almost killed our daughter.”
Atlas's face went pale.
“I know.”
His voice broke slightly.
“There isn't a day I don't remember that.”
Elena looked away.
For once, he wasn't defending himself.
He wasn't blaming Mara.
He wasn't blaming duty.
He wasn't blaming his position as Alpha.
He was simply accepting the weight of what he had done.
...
A small voice suddenly came from behind Elena.
“Daddy?”
Atlas froze.
Lily ran through the gate.
Elena turned immediately.
“Lily, slow down.”
But the little girl was already smiling.
Atlas crouched down before she reached him.
He opened his arms but didn't move forward.
Lily ran directly into them.
Atlas closed his eyes.
His arms wrapped gently around her.
“Hi, little star.”
Lily pulled back.
“I made you a picture.”
Atlas smiled.
“I got it.”
“Do you like it?”
“I love it.”
Lily looked at him seriously.
“Mama said you have to earn being family.”
Atlas glanced at Elena.
She looked embarrassed.
But she didn't correct Lily.
Atlas smiled softly.
“Your mother is right.”
Lily nodded with great seriousness.
“Then you better work hard.”
A quiet laugh escaped Atlas.
“I will.”
...
Elena watched them from a few steps away.
She still didn't trust him.
She wasn't ready to forgive him.
And she certainly wasn't ready to love him again.
But something had changed.
Atlas was no longer asking her to forget the past.
He was finally willing to live with the consequences of it.
For the first time since their bond had broken, Elena felt no need to run.
She simply stood there.
Watching Lily laugh.
Watching Atlas listen.
And wondering whether some wounds were meant to become scars instead of reopening forever.
Atlas looked up at her.
Their eyes met.
Neither of them spoke.
But this time, the silence didn't feel like an ending.
It felt like the beginning of something neither of them had the right to name yet.
