For the first time in years, Atlas had stopped chasing Elena.
Instead, he was learning how to wait.
He visited Pine Ridge only when Elena allowed it.
He never crossed the boundary without permission.
And every time Lily called him Daddy, he looked as though he still couldn't believe he had been given another chance.
...
But while Atlas was slowly rebuilding his relationship with Lily, Blackwood Pack was beginning to fall apart.
Mara had noticed the change.
Atlas no longer stayed at her cottage.
He no longer answered every demand immediately.
He no longer allowed her to use her unstable wolf as an excuse to control him.
And that terrified her.
One evening, Mara stood outside Atlas's office and knocked.
“Come in.”
She opened the door with tears already in her eyes.
“Atlas, I need your help.”
He looked up from the documents on his desk.
“What happened?”
“My wolf is becoming unstable again.”
Atlas's expression remained calm.
“Have you spoken to the doctor?”
Mara hesitated.
“I need you.”
Atlas closed the document.
“Mara, I've arranged for the specialist from North Valley to examine you tomorrow.”
Her face changed.
“You aren't coming?”
“No.”
“But you promised Rowan.”
Atlas's jaw tightened.
“I promised to make sure you were safe.”
He paused.
“I never promised to destroy Elena's life to do it.”
Mara stared at him.
For the first time, she realized the man who had always protected her was no longer willing to believe everything she said.
...
The following morning, the specialist arrived at Blackwood.
Mara sat across from the doctor while Atlas waited outside.
After a long examination, the doctor walked into the hallway.
Atlas immediately stood.
“How is she?”
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
“Alpha, I need to ask you something.”
“Go ahead.”
“Has Mara ever actually suffered an uncontrolled transformation?”
Atlas frowned.
“She said she has been at risk for years.”
“I'm asking whether you personally witnessed one.”
Atlas went silent.
He remembered every night Mara had threatened to shift.
Every time she had scratched herself.
Every time she had cried that her wolf was losing control.
But he had never actually seen her lose control.
The doctor continued.
“Her wolf isn't unstable.”
Atlas's expression hardened.
“What?”
“Her medical records show no evidence of progressive instability. Her previous evaluations were normal.”
The hallway seemed to become unnaturally quiet.
“Are you saying she lied?”
“I'm saying her medical history doesn't support what she told you.”
Atlas stared at the closed examination-room door.
Something inside him cracked.
...
When Mara came out, she immediately noticed his expression.
“Atlas?”
He didn't answer.
Instead, he placed a file on the table.
“Explain this.”
Mara looked at the documents.
Her face drained of color.
“I don't understand.”
“The doctor says your wolf is stable.”
“She made a mistake.”
“Three doctors made the same mistake?”
Mara's lips parted.
Atlas took one step closer.
“Did you lie to me?”
“No.”
“Did you manipulate me?”
“Atlas, I would never—”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“I was afraid.”
Atlas's voice became colder.
“Afraid of what?”
She lowered her head.
“Afraid you would leave me.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
For years, he had mistaken her fear for helplessness.
He had mistaken manipulation for vulnerability.
And while trying to protect her, he had destroyed the woman who had trusted him most.
...
That afternoon, Atlas went to Pine Ridge.
Elena was sitting on the porch while Lily played in the garden.
Atlas stopped at the gate.
Elena looked up.
“Something happened.”
It wasn't a question.
Atlas nodded.
“The doctor examined Mara.”
Elena's expression remained guarded.
“And?”
“Her wolf was never unstable.”
Elena went completely still.
She didn't smile.
She didn't look satisfied.
She simply closed her eyes for a moment.
Three years of pain suddenly had an explanation.
Every accusation.
Every threat.
Every time Atlas had chosen Mara over her.
All of it had been built on a lie.
Atlas looked at Elena.
“I'm sorry.”
She opened her eyes.
“You should be.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“You believed her.”
“Yes.”
“Even when you had every reason to believe me.”
Atlas lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“Do you know what hurt the most?”
He looked at her.
“It wasn't Mara.”
She placed a hand over her heart.
“It was knowing that you trusted her tears more than you trusted me.”
Atlas had no defense.
There was nothing he could say that would make those years disappear.
So he simply answered.
“I know.”
...
Lily suddenly ran toward them.
“Daddy!”
Atlas immediately crouched down.
Lily threw herself into his arms.
He caught her carefully.
Elena watched silently.
Atlas looked at his daughter and then at Elena.
“I won't ask you to forgive me.”
Elena said nothing.
“But I will make sure the truth is known.”
He stood with Lily in his arms.
“Even if everyone in Blackwood hates me for what I did, I won't hide behind another lie.”
Elena studied him for a long moment.
Then she quietly said,
“Good.”
Atlas nodded.
For the first time, he understood that redemption wasn't about getting Elena back.
It was about becoming someone who deserved the trust he had once destroyed.
