The truth about Mara spread through Blackwood faster than Atlas could contain it.
By evening, the elders had requested an emergency council meeting.
Mara was summoned before the entire council.
She arrived pale and trembling, with tears already filling her eyes.
Atlas stood on the opposite side of the chamber.
For the first time, he didn't look at her with sympathy.
He looked at her with disappointment.
The head elder placed several medical records on the table.
“These records show that Mara's wolf was never unstable.”
A murmur spread through the chamber.
Mara shook her head.
“That's not true.”
The elder continued.
“Three independent examinations confirm the same conclusion.”
Mara's voice broke.
“I was sick. I was afraid. I didn't know what was happening to me.”
Atlas's expression remained cold.
“Then why did you tell me you would die if I left you?”
Mara couldn't answer.
“Why did you threaten to force a transformation every time I tried to return to Elena?”
Still nothing.
Atlas's hands tightened at his sides.
“And why did you tell me Elena was trying to hurt you when you knew she wasn't?”
Mara began to cry.
“Because I loved you.”
Atlas stared at her.
“That isn't an answer.”
“I was afraid of losing you.”
“So you destroyed my mate bond instead?”
The chamber fell silent.
...
One of the elders slowly turned toward Atlas.
“Alpha, there is another matter.”
Atlas looked up.
“What matter?”
The elder opened another file.
“The hospital records from the night Elena went into premature labor.”
Atlas froze.
“Why are those records here?”
“Because the guards who took Elena to the hospital filed a formal complaint.”
A document was placed in front of him.
“They stated that you ordered them to leave a heavily pregnant Luna in freezing water until she recovered a naming token that did not exist.”
Atlas's face went pale.
He remembered Elena's face in the pool.
Her lips had been blue.
Her hands had been trembling.
And he had walked away.
At the time, he had believed Mara.
Now he understood exactly what he had done.
The elder continued.
“The guards also recorded that they contacted you repeatedly when Elena began bleeding.”
Atlas closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You refused to answer.”
“Yes.”
“And your daughter was born that night.”
Atlas swallowed hard.
“Yes.”
The elder's voice became quiet.
“She nearly died.”
Atlas lowered his head.
There was nothing left to defend.
...
Then the chamber doors opened.
A junior guard entered carrying a sealed envelope.
“Elder, this was delivered from Pine Ridge.”
The elder opened it.
Inside were copies of documents Elena had preserved before leaving Blackwood.
Financial transfers.
Medical reports.
Messages.
Witness statements.
And a copy of the original dissolution request from three years earlier.
Atlas stared at the documents.
Elena had kept everything.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she had known that one day, someone might try to rewrite what happened.
The elder looked at Atlas.
“She never fabricated her accusations.”
Atlas's voice was barely audible.
“I know.”
“She told the truth.”
“I know.”
“And you refused to hear it.”
Atlas looked down.
“I know.”
...
Mara suddenly stepped forward.
“I made mistakes.”
Atlas looked at her.
“Mistakes?”
She cried harder.
“I was lonely after Rowan died.”
“So was Elena.”
Mara's lips trembled.
“I needed someone.”
“So did Elena.”
“I loved you.”
Atlas's voice was quiet.
“And I destroyed the woman I loved because I believed you.”
Mara looked at him in shock.
He had never said those words before.
Not like this.
Not without hesitation.
Atlas turned toward the council.
“I accept responsibility for everything I did.”
Several elders exchanged looks.
“As Alpha, I abused my authority when I punished Elena without a proper hearing.”
His voice remained steady.
“I failed my mate.”
He paused.
“I failed my daughter.”
The words seemed to cost him everything.
“And I failed this pack.”
...
The head elder finally spoke.
“Then what do you intend to do?”
Atlas looked toward the windows.
Beyond them, the Blackwood mountains disappeared into the darkness.
“I'm going to Pine Ridge.”
“To demand Elena's return?”
Atlas shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
He answered without hesitation.
“To apologize without asking for anything in return.”
...
Later that night, Atlas stood outside the Pine Ridge border.
He didn't cross.
He didn't send a message through the pack link.
He simply waited.
After nearly an hour, Elena appeared on the other side of the gate.
She looked at him carefully.
“Why are you here?”
Atlas lowered his head.
“The council knows the truth now.”
Elena's expression didn't change.
“Good.”
“I brought no demands.”
She remained silent.
“I won't ask you to come back.”
His voice shook slightly.
“I won't ask you to forgive me.”
Elena looked at him for a long moment.
Atlas continued.
“I only came to say that you were right.”
Her eyes glistened.
“About what?”
“About everything.”
The wind moved through the trees between them.
Atlas took a slow breath.
“You deserved to be believed.”
He looked down.
“You deserved to be protected.”
His voice cracked.
“And our daughter deserved a father who was there when she was born.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
But she didn't look away.
For the first time, Atlas wasn't trying to change her decision.
He was simply accepting it.
And somehow, that hurt more than any rejection.
Elena finally spoke.
“You can't change what happened.”
Atlas nodded.
“I know.”
“You can't give me those years back.”
“I know.”
“Then what are you going to do?”
Atlas looked at her.
“Make sure Lily never has to wonder whether her father loves her.”
Elena was silent.
Then she stepped aside from the gate.
“You can see her tomorrow.”
Atlas looked at her in surprise.
It wasn't forgiveness.
It wasn't reconciliation.
But it was another chance.
He lowered his head.
“Thank you.”
Elena turned away.
“Don't thank me yet.”
She glanced back at him.
“Earn it.”
Atlas nodded.
This time, he understood exactly what she meant.
