Three days after Atlas's first visit with Lily, Elena received a letter from the Blackwood Registry.
She opened it at the kitchen table while Lily colored beside her.
The document contained a formal request from the Blackwood elders.
They wanted Elena to attend a hearing regarding Lily's bloodline status.
Elena's expression hardened.
She had expected this eventually.
The moment Atlas learned his daughter was alive, Blackwood would want a claim.
Not because they suddenly cared about the child.
Because Lily carried the Vale bloodline.
And an Alpha's daughter was never considered insignificant.
Lily looked up from her coloring book.
“Mama?”
“Yes?”
“Is that from Daddy?”
Elena folded the letter.
“No. It's from the Blackwood Registry.”
Lily frowned.
“Are they bad?”
Elena paused.
“Some people make bad choices. That doesn't mean you have to hate them.”
Lily nodded as if she understood.
Then she returned to her drawing.
Elena looked at the picture.
There were three wolves beneath a large golden sun.
One was small.
One had long dark hair drawn beside it.
And one was a large silver wolf.
Elena's heart tightened.
She hadn't realized how quickly Atlas had become part of Lily's imagination.
...
That afternoon, Atlas arrived at the Pine Ridge guest house.
He didn't come alone.
An elder from Blackwood stood beside him, carrying a sealed document.
Elena opened the door but didn't invite them inside.
Atlas stopped several feet away.
He had learned not to cross her boundaries without permission.
“I received the Registry notice,” Elena said.
Atlas nodded.
“So did I.”
The elder stepped forward.
“Luna Elena, the Blackwood Pack has a legal right to—”
“She is not Luna anymore.”
Elena's voice was calm.
The elder went silent.
Atlas looked at him.
“Let her finish.”
Elena noticed the difference.
Once, Atlas would have spoken over her.
Now he was making others wait for her answer.
“Lily is registered under the Hart bloodline,” Elena said.
“Her paternal information is sealed.”
The elder frowned.
“But she carries Alpha Atlas's blood.”
“Blood doesn't give you ownership.”
The elder's expression darkened.
“She is the Alpha's daughter.”
Atlas finally spoke.
“And she is Elena's daughter.”
The elder turned toward him.
“Alpha—”
“No.”
Atlas's voice was quiet but absolute.
“You will not treat my daughter like a political asset.”
Elena stared at him.
The words were simple.
But once, those same words would have meant everything to her.
Now they only made her cautious.
The elder lowered his head reluctantly.
“Then what do you want?”
Atlas looked at Elena.
“Whatever she decides.”
Elena's fingers tightened around the door.
“I want Lily to have a relationship with her father if she chooses one.”
Atlas's eyes softened.
“Thank you.”
“But she will not be taken to Blackwood without my permission.”
“Agreed.”
“No bloodline ceremony.”
“Agreed.”
“No claiming her as your heir.”
Atlas hesitated.
Then he nodded.
“Agreed.”
The elder looked shocked.
“Alpha, you cannot simply abandon your successor.”
Atlas's gaze became cold.
“I am not abandoning my daughter.”
He turned toward the elder.
“I am refusing to repeat the mistake that destroyed my family.”
The elder had no answer.
...
After the elder left, Atlas remained outside the gate.
Elena watched him through the doorway.
“You didn't have to do that.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Why?”
Atlas looked toward the garden where Lily was playing.
“Because the first time I had the power to protect you, I used it to control you.”
His voice lowered.
“I won't do that to her.”
Elena was silent.
Atlas took a breath.
“And I won't do it to you.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Lily came running across the garden.
“Daddy!”
Atlas's face changed instantly.
He crouched down as she reached him.
“Hi, Lily.”
She held up a drawing.
“Look! I drew Snow.”
Atlas smiled.
“He looks handsome.”
“He's a little too big.”
“He's always been too big.”
Lily giggled.
Then she pointed at the drawing.
“This is Mama.”
Atlas looked at Elena's small figure drawn beneath the tree.
“And this?”
Lily pointed to the third wolf.
“Me.”
Atlas swallowed.
“You made us a family?”
Lily nodded.
“But Mama said families don't have to live in the same house.”
Atlas looked at Elena.
Something inside his chest broke open.
“Your mother is very wise.”
Lily smiled.
“Can we have dinner together?”
Atlas didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Elena instead.
This time, he waited for her decision.
Elena studied him for several seconds.
Then she nodded.
“One dinner.”
Lily cheered.
Atlas smiled.
For the first time, the three of them walked toward the house together.
It wasn't a reunion.
It wasn't forgiveness.
It wasn't the family Atlas had once imagined.
But it was a beginning.
And this time, nobody was being forced to stay.
