The woman who had challenged my father was still standing near the front table.
She looked from Robert to Caleb's father, then back to me.
“I think we deserve an explanation,” she said.
My father forced a smile.
“There has been a misunderstanding.”
“A recording of you admitting you were drinking before the accident is not a misunderstanding.”
The room fell silent again.
Caleb's father finally stepped forward.
“Everyone needs to calm down.”
I turned toward him.
“You knew about the accident too.”
His expression hardened.
“Be careful, Nora.”
“Why?”
I raised my voice enough for everyone to hear.
“Because asking questions makes your family uncomfortable?”
He didn't answer.
My father grabbed my arm.
I pulled away immediately.
“Don't touch me.”
The guests watched us closely.
My mother rushed onto the stage.
“Nora, this isn't helping anyone.”
I looked at her.
“You knew too.”
Her face crumpled.
“I was trying to protect our family.”
“From what?”
She whispered, “From losing everything.”
That answer changed the room.
A few investors exchanged worried looks.
I turned toward the screen.
“Then let's talk about what everyone was protecting.”
I motioned to the technician.
The Lakefront financial presentation appeared on the screen.
Gasps rose from the audience.
My father shouted, “Turn that off!”
The technician hesitated.
I stepped toward the microphone.
“These documents show that the Lakefront project is not simply a charity development. The Bennett and Hayes families have been negotiating it for months.”
I clicked to the next slide.
“And part of the financing depends on assets connected to the Bennett family trust.”
An older investor stood.
“Robert, is this true?”
My father couldn't answer.
Caleb finally spoke.
“Nora, those documents are confidential.”
I looked at him.
“So you admit they're real?”
He froze.
The crowd erupted into whispers.
I continued.
“There's something else.”
I displayed the acquisition documents for the Chicago building.
“Your company is purchasing the building where I recently signed a lease.”
Caleb's face changed.
“You moved to Chicago?”
“I planned to.”
“Without telling me?”
I smiled bitterly.
“You abandoned me in a blizzard without telling me you knew the weather could kill me.”
He had no response.
Paige stepped onto the stage.
“She's telling the truth.”
Everyone turned toward her.
My father shouted, “Paige, don't.”
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“I'm done being afraid of you.”
She took a breath.
“I was the one who left Nora in the mountains. But Robert knew about it. Caleb knew too.”
Caleb's voice cracked.
“Paige.”
She shook her head.
“No. You don't get to silence me anymore.”
Then she looked at me.
“And I know what happened to Aunt Claire.”
My heart stopped.
Claire.
My mother's name.
The entire ballroom seemed to disappear.
I stepped closer to Paige.
“What do you know?”
She wiped her tears.
“The accident wasn't an accident.”
A stunned silence followed.
“Dad caused it,” Paige said. “And Caleb's father helped him cover it up.”
Caleb's father immediately shouted, “That's a lie!”
Paige shook her head.
“Then explain why you paid the investigator.”
He went silent.
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
For twelve years, I had mourned my mother believing she died because of a terrible accident.
Now I knew the truth had been buried on purpose.
And everyone I had trusted had helped bury it.
