For several seconds, nobody moved.
The ballroom had gone so quiet that I could hear the faint hum of the speakers above us.
My father's face had lost every trace of confidence.
Caleb stood beside him, staring at Paige as if he couldn't decide whether to call her a liar or beg her to stop.
I looked at Caleb.
“You knew?” I asked.
His jaw tightened.
“Nora, I didn't know everything.”
“That's not what I asked.”
He looked away.
That was enough.
Something inside me finally stopped hoping for an explanation that would make him innocent.
“You knew something,” I whispered.
Caleb stepped toward me.
“I knew there were things our fathers didn't want discussed. I didn't know your mother was deliberately left without help.”
“But you knew there was a secret.”
He said nothing.
The silence was an answer.
My father suddenly reached for the microphone.
“This has gone far enough.”
His voice shook, but he tried to make it sound authoritative.
“Paige has been unstable for years. She's twisting old family matters because she's angry.”
Paige laughed bitterly.
“That's your defense?”
Robert glared at her.
“You stole private property and manipulated a recording.”
“No,” Paige said. “I stole evidence because you spent twelve years making sure nobody could find it.”
A murmur spread through the ballroom.
The woman who had challenged my father stepped forward again.
“Mr. Bennett, if you're innocent, you should welcome an investigation.”
My father stared at her.
For the first time that night, he looked afraid.
Caleb's father grabbed his arm.
“Robert, we need to leave.”
I noticed the exchange.
They weren't talking like innocent men caught in an embarrassing misunderstanding.
They looked like partners who had just realized the same secret could destroy both of them.
I turned toward the giant screen.
“We're not finished.”
Caleb looked at me.
“Nora, what are you doing?”
“Finding out how much they paid to keep everyone quiet.”
I opened the second folder from the encrypted drive.
It contained bank transfers, legal invoices, private investigator payments, and old settlement documents.
My fingers froze over one particular file.
The payment date was three days after my mother's death.
The recipient was the same private investigator Paige had mentioned.
But there was another payment.
Then another.
And another.
They had been paying him for years.
My heart pounded as I opened the oldest invoice.
The description was only four words.
“Monitor daughter. Maintain silence.”
My stomach dropped.
Daughter.
They hadn't only hidden the accident.
They had been watching me.
I looked at my father.
“What did you think I was going to discover?”
He didn't answer.
“What were you afraid I'd remember?”
Still nothing.
Paige slowly walked toward me.
“Nora, there's something else.”
I turned to her.
“What?”
She swallowed hard.
“The investigator didn't just watch you.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then what did he do?”
Paige looked at Robert.
“He was told to find out whether you had the memory card.”
The room seemed to tilt.
I stared at her.
“They thought I had it?”
Paige nodded.
“Because they knew I took it.”
My father's expression changed.
Panic flashed across his face.
That was the first real confirmation I needed.
He knew exactly what Paige had taken.
And he had spent years terrified that the evidence would surface.
Caleb stepped closer.
“Nora, please.”
I raised my hand.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
“You don't get to ask me for trust anymore.”
His face tightened with pain.
“I love you.”
I almost laughed.
“Love doesn't abandon someone in a blizzard.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
“You weren't confused. You made a choice.”
The words landed harder than I expected.
Caleb looked devastated, but I couldn't feel sorry for him anymore.
I had spent years protecting his feelings while everyone else treated mine like entertainment.
Now it was my turn to choose myself.
I closed the evidence folder.
“This gala was supposed to announce your partnership.”
I looked at Robert and Caleb's father.
“Instead, it's going to announce the beginning of the investigation.”
The woman who had challenged my father nodded.
“I'll make sure the board receives copies of everything.”
My father's face went pale.
“You wouldn't dare.”
She looked directly at him.
“Watch me.”
Then every phone in the ballroom began ringing.
One after another.
People checked their screens.
Whispers turned into shocked conversations.
I pulled out my own phone.
A message from an unknown number was waiting.
I opened it.
There was a single sentence.
“You found the accident, Nora. Now find out who ordered the cover-up.”
Beneath it was a photograph.
An old photograph of my mother standing beside a man I had never seen before.
On the back, written in my mother's handwriting, were six words.
“If anything happens to me, trust him.”
I stared at the photograph.
For the first time that night, my father wasn't the person who frightened me most.
Because somewhere in the past, my mother had left behind one final secret.
And whoever sent me that photograph knew exactly where to find it.
