Ruby stood outside the small chapel behind Grayhaven Registry Hall, staring at Scarlett through the rain-streaked glass.
Scarlett had asked to meet alone, but Ruby no longer trusted the word alone.
She kept the recording device in her coat pocket and the copied documents secured on her phone.
When Scarlett finally stepped inside, she looked nothing like the confident woman who had stood beside Noah at the claiming ceremony.
Her face was pale, and her hands trembled.
Ruby did not sit.
“Tell me what you know about the night I was born.”
Scarlett closed the door behind her.
“Our parents told us you were born weaker than me.”
Ruby frowned.
“That is what they always said.”
“It was a lie.”
The words landed harder than Ruby expected.
Scarlett pulled a folded document from her bag.
“Your birth record was changed.”
Ruby unfolded it with shaking fingers.
The original record listed her wolf lineage as unknown, but beside it was a handwritten notation stamped by an old Grayhaven registrar.
Eligible under first-blood succession law.
Ruby stared at the words.
“What does this mean?”
Scarlett swallowed.
“It means you were never the weaker daughter.”
She looked toward the dark windows as if afraid someone might be listening.
“Your wolf was different. The healers couldn't detect an ordinary mate bond because your bloodline carries an old hereditary trait. You could choose a mate freely without the usual claiming mark.”
Ruby's heart pounded.
For years, everyone had told her that she was ordinary because she had no wolf mark.
Noah had used that weakness against her too.
But the truth was the opposite.
Her lack of a mark had never meant she was unwanted.
It meant she was not bound by the rules that controlled everyone else.
“Then why was my record changed?” Ruby asked.
Scarlett's eyes filled with tears.
“Because if the council knew, you would have had legal priority over certain Calder family succession rights.”
Ruby went still.
The financial agreement suddenly made sense.
The Calder family did not simply want Scarlett as Noah's wife.
They wanted control of a succession that Ruby could legally challenge.
“My father knew.”
Scarlett nodded.
“Both our parents knew.”
Ruby's voice became colder.
“And you?”
Scarlett looked down.
“I learned three years ago.”
Ruby's breath caught.
Three years.
Three years while Scarlett had continued living in her home, sharing meals with her, calling her sister, and secretly building a life with Noah.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Scarlett began to cry.
“Because I was afraid.”
Ruby almost laughed.
“You were afraid, so you let me be destroyed?”
Scarlett shook her head desperately.
“I never knew how far they would go.”
She admitted that Noah had discovered the altered registry records around the same time.
At first, Noah had promised Scarlett he would expose the truth.
Then the Calder family offered him a bargain.
If he married Scarlett publicly and kept Ruby under control until the succession matter was settled, the family would protect Scarlett and her child.
Ruby's stomach twisted.
“So he chose the bargain.”
Scarlett could not answer.
Her silence was enough.
Ruby remembered Noah telling her that choice was stronger than destiny.
He had been right.
He had simply chosen everyone except her.
A sound came from outside the chapel.
Scarlett immediately wiped her tears.
Ruby turned toward the door.
Noah stepped inside.
His expression was exhausted, but his eyes were fixed on Ruby.
“You weren't supposed to hear this from her.”
Ruby stared at him.
“Were you planning to tell me at all?”
Noah said nothing.
Ruby pulled out the copied birth record.
“My entire life was built around a lie.”
Noah's jaw tightened.
“Ruby, I was trying to protect you.”
“You protected yourself.”
He moved closer.
“I made terrible choices.”
“No. You made deliberate choices.”
Ruby's voice shook, but she did not step back.
“You knew my family erased the truth. You knew the registry was corrupt. You knew Scarlett was part of the plan. And you still stood beside me while everyone watched.”
Noah lowered his head.
“I thought I could fix it later.”
Ruby gave him a bitter smile.
“Later is what cowards call the future when they don't have the courage to do the right thing today.”
Scarlett looked between them.
Then she whispered, “There is one more thing.”
Ruby turned.
Scarlett reached into her bag again and removed an old photograph.
It showed Ruby's mother holding a newborn baby.
Beside her stood a Grayhaven registrar and an unfamiliar man wearing a silver council insignia.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
The same date Ruby was born.
Below it, someone had written a single sentence.
“The first daughter must never be claimed by the Calder heir.”
Ruby stared at the words.
For the first time, she understood that the betrayal had begun long before Noah ever entered her life.
And if that sentence was the reason her parents had spent twenty-seven years controlling her, then tomorrow's council hearing would not merely expose Noah.
It would expose everyone who had built their power on her stolen identity.
