Chapter 13: The Truth Before the Council

By sunrise, the Grayhaven Council Hall was surrounded by wolves from nearly every major pack in the region.

The emergency hearing had been announced as a review of irregularities in the mate registry.

But I knew the truth was much bigger than that.

This hearing was about my stolen identity.

I entered the council chamber carrying the original documents from Locker 217.

My mother and father were already seated beside the Calder family.

Noah stood behind them.

Scarlett sat alone at the opposite side of the room.

When she saw me, she lowered her eyes.

The chief elder struck the ceremonial staff against the floor.

“Ruby Mercer, you have requested this hearing. Present your evidence.”

I placed the birth record, the financial agreement, and the original mate documents on the table.

Whispers immediately spread through the chamber.

My father stood.

“These documents have been taken out of context.”

I looked at him.

“Then you won't mind if the council hears the recording.”

His face went white.

I pressed play.

His own voice echoed through the chamber.

“If Ruby discovers the agreement, make sure nobody believes her.”

My mother's voice followed.

“Ruby is emotional. We can convince her that she misunderstood everything.”

Silence fell.

My mother covered her mouth.

The chief elder looked toward them.

“Did you authorize the alteration of Ruby Mercer's birth record?”

My father said nothing.

That silence was his answer.

Then the doors opened.

Noah walked toward the council table.

Everyone turned to him.

“I have something to add.”

He placed the Calder family's original registry ledger on the table.

“The mate records were altered.”

A council member stood abruptly.

“Noah, do you understand what you're accusing your own family of?”

“Yes.”

His voice was steady.

“And I'm accusing myself too.”

I stared at him.

For the first time, Noah was not trying to protect himself.

He admitted that he had known about the altered records and had helped conceal them.

He admitted that his relationship with Scarlett had been hidden for five years.

He admitted that the public claiming ceremony with me had been planned as a cover for their legal mate contract.

The chamber erupted.

My mother began crying.

My father shouted that Noah was lying.

Scarlett suddenly stood.

“He's not lying.”

Everyone became silent again.

Scarlett walked toward the center of the chamber.

“I signed the contract with Noah.”

Her voice trembled.

“I knew Ruby was being used as a cover.”

She looked at me.

“And I let it happen.”

Tears rolled down her face.

“I told myself I was protecting my child and my future. But the truth is, I was protecting myself.”

I watched my sister confess everything.

Part of me wanted to hate her.

Another part remembered the girl who had once held my hand when I was afraid of my first shift.

But forgiveness was not something I could give today.

The chief elder examined the original birth record.

“Ruby Mercer was the first-born daughter of the Mercer bloodline?”

The registrar nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why was her succession status removed?”

The old registrar who had been summoned as a witness slowly stood.

“Because the Calder family demanded it.”

The chamber exploded with angry voices.

He continued.

“The Calder heir was never supposed to claim the first daughter. There was an old succession dispute. The family believed that if Ruby's status remained public, she could challenge their control of several ancestral properties.”

I finally understood.

This was never about being weaker than Scarlett.

It was never about being less beautiful or less suited to the Calder family.

They had spent my entire life convincing me that I was second because they were afraid of what would happen if I learned I was first.

The chief elder turned toward Noah.

“And you knew?”

Noah lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“Yet you continued your relationship with Ruby?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Noah looked at me.

His eyes were filled with regret.

“Because I loved her once.”

I felt nothing when he said it.

Not anger.

Not relief.

Nothing.

He continued.

“But somewhere along the way, I became afraid of losing Scarlett and the life we had planned.”

He took a breath.

“So I chose cowardice.”

The chief elder struck the staff again.

“The Mercer and Calder families will surrender all disputed registry records for investigation. The altered contracts will be suspended pending review.”

Then he looked at me.

“Ruby Mercer, your original birth and succession status will be restored.”

For the first time in years, I felt as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

My mother approached me after the hearing.

“Ruby…”

I stepped back.

She stopped.

“I am still your mother.”

I looked at her quietly.

“Being my mother does not give you the right to decide what happens to my life.”

She began to cry.

“I thought I was protecting Scarlett.”

“You were protecting your favorite daughter.”

She had no answer.

I walked away.

Outside the council hall, the morning air felt strangely clean.

Noah followed me.

“Ruby.”

I turned.

He stopped several steps away.

“I won't ask you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

His eyes dropped.

“I only want you to know that I regret everything.”

I studied the man I had loved for ten years.

Once, seeing him hurt would have destroyed me.

Now I simply saw a man who had made his choice.

“You said choice was stronger than destiny.”

He looked at me.

“You were right.”

I took a breath.

“So this time, I'm choosing myself.”

I walked away without looking back.

Behind me, Noah did not follow.

For the first time, he understood that my leaving was not a threat.

It was a decision.

That evening, I returned home and opened the last file from Locker 217.

Inside was a sealed letter addressed to me.

The handwriting belonged to the old registrar.

I opened it slowly.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

“Ruby, if you are reading this, then the council has finally learned the truth.”

The second sentence was even more shocking.

“But there is one final secret your parents never told you.”
