The note never left Alistair's hand.
Even after returning to Blackthorn Castle, he read the same sentence countless times.
"Please stop looking for me. Let the woman you loved finally become free."
Every word cut deeper than the last.
She still believed Isabella had always been the woman in his heart.
And he had no one to blame but himself.
For years, he had hidden the truth behind silence.
He believed he was protecting Selena.
Instead, he had only protected her from the truth while allowing doubt to destroy her.
The moment he entered the castle, the Vampire Council requested an emergency meeting.
"Your Highness," the High Elder began, "your absence has endangered diplomatic relations. We must discuss the prophecy concerning Isabella."
"No," Alistair answered coldly.
The council chamber fell silent.
"No?"
"The secrecy ends today."
Several elders immediately protested.
"The prophecy is classified!"
"It has remained hidden for decades!"
"If the kingdoms learn the truth—"
"Then let them learn it," Alistair interrupted.
"My silence already cost me the woman I love."
"I won't sacrifice another life for a secret."
The room erupted into arguments.
For the first time in centuries, the Vampire Prince openly defied his own council.
"Prepare an official declaration," he ordered.
"Reveal the prophecy to every kingdom."
"Explain why Isabella was under royal protection."
"Explain every healer's order."
"Explain everything."
"Your Highness!"
"That's an order."
No one dared argue further.
Meanwhile, life in Elaris continued peacefully.
The annual Festival of Light had arrived.
Artists from across the continent gathered to display their finest works.
My newest painting, Dawn Beyond Sorrow, stood in the center of the exhibition hall.
Unlike my earlier masterpieces, it wasn't painted with grief.
It carried hope.
Visitors stopped in front of it for long moments.
"It feels... peaceful," one woman whispered.
"Like surviving a terrible storm," another added.
Eleanor smiled proudly.
"You've changed, Lena."
"So have your paintings."
I smiled faintly.
"Maybe they've finally become honest."
That afternoon, an exhausted messenger arrived from the northern kingdoms.
He carried newspapers from every major city.
"Have you heard?" he asked the crowd excitedly.
"The Vampire Kingdom released a royal declaration!"
Everyone gathered around eagerly.
Curiosity made me step closer as well.
The front page carried Alistair's royal seal.
Beneath it was a public confession.
Every detail of the ancient prophecy.
Every order concerning Isabella.
Every secret he had hidden.
And finally...
A personal statement from the Vampire Prince himself.
"To my wife, Selena.
I failed you.
Not because I loved another.
But because I believed silence was stronger than trust.
I was wrong.
If you never forgive me, I will accept that judgment.
But let the world know this truth.
My heart has never belonged to anyone except you."
The newspaper slipped slightly in my hands.
The gallery around me seemed to disappear.
I read the words again.
And again.
He hadn't loved Isabella.
He never had.
Everything had truly been duty.
The room became unbearably quiet.
"Lena?" Eleanor asked softly.
"Are you alright?"
I folded the newspaper carefully.
"I don't know."
Because I truly didn't.
The truth changed everything.
Yet somehow...
It also changed nothing.
He hadn't betrayed me intentionally.
But my child was still gone.
My heart had still shattered.
Months of grief couldn't simply disappear because the explanation finally arrived.
That night, I couldn't paint.
I couldn't sleep either.
Instead, I walked alone beside the river.
Moonlight danced across the water.
The same moon that shone over Blackthorn Castle.
"Why now?" I whispered.
"Why couldn't you tell me sooner?"
No answer came.
Far away, Alistair stood alone in Selena's abandoned studio.
He hadn't entered it since returning.
Everything remained exactly as she had left it.
One unfinished canvas still rested upon the easel.
For the first time, he picked up a paintbrush.
His artistic talent was terrible.
Selena used to tease him endlessly about it.
"Stick to ruling kingdoms," she'd laugh.
"Leave painting to me."
A sad smile crossed his face.
He dipped the brush into blue paint.
Slowly...
Awkwardly...
He painted a single sunrise.
It looked nothing like hers.
But it reminded him of her.
"I'll wait," he whispered into the empty room.
"Whether it's one year...
Ten years...
Or a hundred."
"I won't force you to return."
"But if you ever decide to come home..."
"I'll spend the rest of eternity earning the forgiveness I never deserved."
Several weeks later, another invitation arrived in Elaris.
It wasn't from a kingdom.
It wasn't from a prince.
It carried no royal seal.
Only a single handwritten sentence.
"If fate ever gives me one final chance...
May I meet you not as a prince...
But simply as Alistair."
I stared at the letter for a long time.
Then folded it carefully and placed it inside my sketchbook.
Not as a promise.
Not as forgiveness.
Only as a possibility.
Because some hearts could heal.
Others could only learn how to keep beating.
And mine...
Had finally begun beating for myself again.
