A full year passed.
The seasons changed one after another.
Spring flowers bloomed and faded.
Summer sunlight warmed the streets of Elaris.
Autumn painted the forests gold.
Winter covered the city in quiet snow.
For the first time in years, Selena no longer counted the days by grief.
She counted them by paintings.
Her name had become famous throughout the human kingdoms.
Not as the Vampire Prince's wife.
Not as a noblewoman.
But as the mysterious artist whose paintings captured both heartbreak and hope.
People traveled from distant cities just to see her exhibitions.
Critics praised the emotion hidden within every brushstroke.
Children pointed at her landscapes with wonder.
For the first time, Selena had built a life that belonged entirely to her.
Meanwhile, Blackthorn Castle had changed as well.
Alistair ruled with the same wisdom as before.
But those closest to him knew he was no longer the same man.
He smiled less.
He attended every council meeting.
He fulfilled every royal duty.
Yet every evening, without fail, he visited Selena's old studio.
Nothing inside had been moved.
Her unfinished painting still rested upon the easel.
Her favorite chair remained beside the fireplace.
Fresh flowers appeared there every morning.
No servant was responsible for them.
Alistair replaced them himself.
The Silvermoon flowers were gone forever.
In their place bloomed white lilies.
The flowers Selena had always loved.
One quiet afternoon, Edwin entered the studio.
"Your Highness," he said gently.
"It's been a year."
"I know."
"Will you continue waiting?"
Alistair smiled faintly.
"I spent centuries searching for my soulmate before I found her."
"Waiting another lifetime is hardly difficult."
"Even if she never returns?"
"Especially then."
"Love isn't measured by possession."
"It's measured by whether the other person is free to choose."
Edwin nodded with quiet approval.
Far away in Elaris, preparations were underway for the Grand Continental Art Exhibition.
It was the largest artistic event in the known world.
Kings, queens, nobles, merchants, scholars, and commoners would all attend.
Selena had been invited as the guest of honor.
The exhibition hall overflowed with visitors.
Dozens of magnificent paintings decorated the walls.
Yet one masterpiece captured every eye.
It depicted a lone woman standing at the edge of the sea while the sun rose behind her.
Its title read:
"My Own Dawn."
People stood before it in complete silence.
Many left with tears in their eyes.
"It's beautiful," one elderly man whispered.
"No," his wife replied softly.
"It's freedom."
At that same moment, another visitor quietly entered the gallery.
He wore a simple black coat instead of royal robes.
No crown rested upon his head.
No guards followed behind him.
To everyone else, he looked like an ordinary traveler.
Only Selena recognized him immediately.
Alistair.
Their eyes met across the crowded gallery.
Neither of them moved.
For a long moment, the noise around them faded into silence.
Finally, Alistair walked forward.
He stopped several feet away.
Close enough to see her.
Far enough to respect the distance she had created.
"Hello, Selena."
His voice was softer than she remembered.
"Hello... Alistair."
He smiled sadly.
"Thank you for reading my letters."
"I never answered them."
"You didn't have to."
Silence settled between them once more.
There was no anger.
No accusations.
Only two people carrying the weight of a shared past.
"I came here today," Alistair said quietly, "not to ask you to return."
"Then why?"
"To tell you something I should have said long ago."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"Not because I lost you."
"Because I failed you while I still had you."
Selena felt tears sting her eyes.
Not from sadness.
From relief.
Those words were the only thing she had needed to hear.
"I know," she answered softly.
"And I'm sorry too."
"For what?"
"For believing that loving someone meant losing myself."
A gentle smile appeared on Alistair's face.
"You've become extraordinary."
She laughed quietly.
"No."
"I've simply become myself."
They stood together in comfortable silence, admiring her newest painting.
Neither of them mentioned returning.
Neither of them mentioned forever.
Some promises no longer needed to be spoken.
As the exhibition came to an end, Alistair stepped back.
"May I ask one last question?"
"Of course."
"Are you happy?"
Selena looked around the gallery.
At the paintings.
At the people smiling as they admired her work.
At the sunlight pouring through the enormous windows.
Finally, she smiled—a real smile, brighter than any she had worn in years.
"Yes," she answered honestly.
"I finally am."
Alistair closed his eyes for a brief moment.
Then he smiled too.
"That's all I've ever wanted."
He turned and began walking toward the exit.
"Alistair."
He stopped.
"Thank you... for letting me choose."
Without turning around, he nodded.
"Always."
He walked away, disappearing into the crowd.
Selena watched him leave until he was gone.
She didn't chase after him.
He didn't look back.
Sometimes love wasn't about holding on.
Sometimes it meant accepting that two hearts could save each other... without ending up together.
Selena returned to her painting.
With one final brushstroke, she completed 'My Own Dawn.'
It was not a story about revenge.
Nor was it a story about betrayal.
It was a story about healing.
About choosing yourself after losing everything.
About discovering that the strongest heart wasn't the one that loved forever...
But the one brave enough to love itself again.
The End.
