Two months later...
At exactly 2:17 a.m., Shaun's phone rang.
"Mr. Hill," the family doctor said calmly.
"Mrs. Hill has gone into labor."
Before the sentence was even finished, Shaun was already out of bed.
"Catherine?"
"I think... it's time," she whispered through a contraction.
Within minutes, they were on their way to Melbourne Central Hospital.
For the first time in years, Shaun Hill looked genuinely nervous.
He kept checking if Catherine was comfortable.
"Does it hurt?"
"A little?"
"Should I call another doctor?"
Catherine laughed despite the pain.
"Shaun... every doctor in the hospital already knows you're here."
"Good."
"Then they know they'd better take excellent care of my wife."
Several hours later...
The delivery room doors closed.
Shaun was allowed to stay beside Catherine.
He never let go of her hand.
"You're doing great," he whispered.
"Just breathe."
"I'm trying," Catherine replied with a weak smile.
Outside the room, both families waited anxiously.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones walked back and forth nervously.
Even Hadley couldn't sit still.
"I've never seen Mr. Hill this anxious before," he admitted.
"Neither have I," Freya smiled.
"That's love."
Inside the delivery room, another contraction came.
Catherine squeezed Shaun's hand so tightly that it nearly turned white.
"You can break my hand if you need to," he said gently.
"Just don't let go."
Several hours passed.
Finally...
A loud baby's cry echoed through the room.
The doctor smiled brightly.
"Congratulations!"
"It's a healthy baby girl!"
For a few seconds...
Everything became silent.
Then Catherine began crying.
Shaun looked at the tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
His daughter.
Their daughter.
"Would you like to hold her?" the nurse asked.
He nodded carefully.
As the tiny baby was placed into his arms, Shaun completely forgot the outside world.
The little girl slowly opened her eyes.
Tiny fingers wrapped around his index finger.
His heart melted instantly.
"Hello, Princess," he whispered.
"I'm your daddy."
"Welcome home."
The nurse smiled.
"She's beautiful."
"She looks just like her mother."
"Thank goodness," Shaun replied immediately.
"If she looked like me, she'd probably never smile."
Everyone in the room laughed.
When Catherine finally held their daughter, tears filled her eyes once again.
"She's perfect," she whispered.
"Yes," Shaun agreed.
"Just like her mother."
Outside the delivery room, the doctor stepped into the hallway.
"Congratulations."
"Mother and baby are both healthy."
Cheers immediately erupted.
Mrs. Jones burst into tears.
"I'm finally a grandmother!"
Mr. Jones wiped his eyes quietly.
"Our family finally has something to celebrate again."
Freya jumped excitedly.
"I knew it would be a girl!"
"You guessed boy yesterday," Hadley reminded her.
"Details don't matter."
"She's adorable already."
Later that afternoon, visitors were finally allowed into Catherine's private room.
Everyone gathered around the sleeping baby.
"Have you chosen a name yet?" Mrs. Jones asked.
Shaun looked toward Catherine.
"You should decide."
She smiled softly.
"How about... Grace?"
"Grace Hill."
"Because she entered our lives with grace..."
"And gave us a future filled with hope."
Shaun nodded without hesitation.
"Grace Hill."
"Perfect."
He looked down at his daughter sleeping peacefully.
"Grace..."
"Daddy promises something."
"No matter what happens in this world..."
"You'll always have a home where you're loved."
"You'll never have to earn our love."
"You'll never have to compete for it."
"Because your mother taught me..."
"That unconditional love is the greatest gift a parent can give."
Catherine reached over and held Shaun's hand.
Their fingers intertwined above their daughter's tiny blanket.
Three hands.
One family.
One beautiful beginning.
Outside the hospital window, the morning sun slowly rose over Melbourne.
For the Hill family...
A brand-new chapter had finally begun.
