A month after the charity gala, Serenity had settled comfortably into her new role as Chairwoman of the York Literacy Foundation.
She traveled to schools, libraries, and community centers, encouraging children to discover the joy of reading.
Her kindness won hearts everywhere she went.
York Corporation's public image also reached new heights.
People no longer admired the company only for its success.
They admired the compassion of the couple leading it.
One Friday afternoon, Ben entered Zachary's office with a small smile.
"Sir, everything is ready."
"Good," Zachary replied.
"Don't let Serenity suspect anything."
"She won't," Ben answered confidently.
That evening, Zachary picked Serenity up from the bookstore.
"Are we going somewhere?" she asked.
"Yes," he replied mysteriously.
"It's a surprise."
Nearly an hour later, the car stopped outside a beautiful botanical garden overlooking a quiet lake.
Thousands of tiny fairy lights decorated the pathways.
White roses lined the entrance.
"This is beautiful," Serenity whispered.
"Come with me," Zachary said, offering his hand.
They walked together through the glowing gardens.
Soft violin music drifted through the evening air.
At the center of the garden stood a small gazebo covered in white flowers.
Inside was a table set for two.
A candlelit dinner awaited them.
"You planned all this?" Serenity asked in surprise.
"I had help," Zachary admitted with a smile.
"Grandma May insisted it needed more flowers."
"That definitely sounds like Grandma."
They enjoyed dinner while talking about everything they had experienced together.
The awkwardness that once existed between them had completely disappeared.
They laughed easily.
Finished each other's sentences.
And shared comfortable silences.
After dessert, Zachary stood and walked toward Serenity.
"There's something I've wanted to say properly," he said.
He gently took both of her hands.
"When we met at City Hall..."
"I believed I was entering a business arrangement."
"I never imagined I'd meet the woman who would completely change my life."
"You taught me patience."
"You taught me kindness."
"Most importantly..."
"You taught me what home truly feels like."
Serenity's eyes filled with tears.
"Zachary..."
"I love you, Serenity."
"Not because you're my wife."
"Not because Grandma brought us together."
"I love you because you're you."
"Every morning feels brighter because you're beside me."
"Every success means more when I can share it with you."
"Every dream I have now includes you."
He slowly reached into his jacket pocket.
Instead of another wedding ring...
He took out a delicate silver necklace with a tiny book-shaped pendant.
"You already wear my wedding ring," he said softly.
"But this reminds me of the woman who changed my world through her love of books."
"Will you accept it?"
Tears rolled gently down Serenity's cheeks.
"Yes."
"A thousand times yes."
Zachary carefully fastened the necklace around her neck.
The tiny silver book rested perfectly above her heart.
"It's beautiful," she whispered.
"Just like its owner," he replied.
Serenity laughed through her tears.
"You're becoming quite charming, Mr. York."
"I'm learning from the best."
She stepped closer.
"Do you remember asking me if I'd choose you again?"
"I do."
"Well..."
"I have my answer now."
She gently cupped his face.
"If I lived a hundred lifetimes..."
"I'd still choose the man who pretended to be an ordinary office worker just so he could find someone who loved his heart instead of his fortune."
Before Zachary could reply, Serenity kissed him.
It was gentle.
Warm.
And filled with every emotion they had been too afraid to express.
When they finally pulled apart, both were smiling.
Above them, fireworks suddenly lit up the night sky.
Golden lights reflected across the lake.
"Did you plan that too?" Serenity laughed.
"Maybe," Zachary admitted.
"Or maybe Grandma May did."
Hidden behind a row of trees, Grandma May quietly wiped away a happy tear.
"Those stubborn children finally figured it out," she whispered.
Ben stood beside her with a grin.
"I think this is only the beginning."
Grandma May nodded.
"No..."
"This is the beginning of their forever."
