The anonymous photograph remained on Madeline's desk all night.
She couldn't stop staring at it.
Meredith was sitting inside a private restaurant with three unfamiliar men.
The date printed in the corner proved it had been taken only two days earlier.
"So... you've finally made your move," Madeline murmured.
She locked the photograph inside her drawer.
This time, she refused to underestimate Meredith.
Five years ago, her kindness had nearly destroyed her life.
She wouldn't make the same mistake twice.
The following morning, Crawford Design International officially opened its Glendale headquarters.
Business leaders, reporters, and investors gathered for the grand opening ceremony.
Madeline stood confidently before the cameras.
"Ms. Crawford, why did you choose Glendale for your company's expansion?"
"Because every successful journey deserves to end where it began," she answered calmly.
"Does that have anything to do with Mr. Jeremy Whitman?"
Madeline smiled politely.
"Today's event is about business, not personal history."
Her graceful response immediately became the headline of the day.
Inside Whitman Corporation, Jeremy watched the live broadcast.
His assistant entered quietly.
"Mr. Whitman, Ms. Crawford's company has already signed contracts with three international luxury brands."
"She's impressive," Jeremy admitted.
"She always was."
"You knew she had this much talent?"
Jeremy smiled bitterly.
"No."
"Because I never bothered to look."
His phone suddenly rang.
It was an unknown number.
"Mr. Whitman," a distorted voice said.
"If you truly care about your son... watch Meredith carefully."
Before Jeremy could ask another question, the call ended.
His expression darkened immediately.
"Find Meredith."
"Now."
"Right away, sir."
Meanwhile, Meredith sat inside a luxurious apartment overlooking the city.
"Has everything been arranged?" she asked.
One of the men nodded.
"We'll make sure Madeline loses everything."
"Her company."
"Her reputation."
"Even her son."
Meredith smiled coldly.
"Good."
"If Jeremy refuses to come back to me..."
"I'll make sure he has nothing left to love."
That evening, Ethan insisted on visiting a nearby amusement park.
"Mom, please!"
"You promised!"
Madeline laughed softly.
"Alright."
"Only for two hours."
"Yay!"
They arrived just before sunset.
Children filled the park with laughter.
Ethan rushed toward the carousel.
"Mom, look!"
"I'm riding the horse!"
Madeline smiled as she watched him.
For a few precious moments...
Nothing else mattered.
Across the park, a man quietly lowered his camera.
"Target confirmed," he whispered into his phone.
Not far away, Jeremy's assistant received unexpected surveillance photos.
"Mr. Whitman!"
"Someone has been following Ms. Crawford and Ethan since this afternoon."
Jeremy immediately stood.
"Where are they?"
"Central Amusement Park."
Without another word, Jeremy rushed out.
Back at the amusement park, Ethan accidentally wandered toward the game stalls.
"Mom!"
"Look at this giant teddy bear!"
"Stay where I can see you," Madeline reminded him.
"Okay!"
As she paid for a drink...
One of the mysterious men slowly approached Ethan.
"Hello, little guy."
"Would you like some candy?"
Ethan frowned.
"Mom says I shouldn't talk to strangers."
"I'm your mom's friend."
"Really?"
"Of course."
Before the man could move any closer, another hand grabbed his shoulder.
"Step away from the boy."
The man turned.
Jeremy stood behind him.
"Who are you?"
"Someone who's about to call the police."
The stranger quickly pushed Jeremy aside and ran into the crowd.
"Security!" Jeremy shouted.
People immediately began chasing the suspect.
Madeline rushed over after hearing the commotion.
"Ethan!"
The little boy ran into her arms.
"Mom!"
"I'm okay."
Madeline hugged him tightly.
Her hands were trembling.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"The mister from before saved me."
Madeline slowly looked at Jeremy.
For several seconds...
Neither of them spoke.
"Thank you," she finally whispered.
"I only did what any father would do," Jeremy replied instinctively.
The words slipped out before he realized it.
Madeline looked at him in silence.
Ethan tilted his head.
"Father?"
Jeremy's heart stopped.
"I..."
Before he could explain, Madeline gently interrupted.
"He means any good man would do the same."
"Oh."
Ethan smiled.
"Thank you anyway, mister."
Jeremy forced a smile.
"You're welcome."
Police officers soon arrived and reviewed the security footage.
"This wasn't random," one officer said.
"The suspect appeared to be targeting the child specifically."
Madeline's face grew pale.
She immediately remembered the anonymous photograph.
Jeremy looked at the officer.
"Increase patrols around this family."
"I'll cover every expense."
The officer nodded.
"We'll do our best."
Later that night, Jeremy drove behind Madeline's car all the way back to her villa.
Once she safely entered the gate, he prepared to leave.
Unexpectedly, Madeline walked back outside.
"Jeremy."
He stopped.
"Yes?"
"Today..."
"You protected Ethan without thinking about yourself."
"Thank you."
Jeremy smiled sadly.
"I was only protecting my son."
Madeline lowered her eyes.
She didn't deny it this time.
That single silence meant more to Jeremy than any confession.
As he drove away, determination filled his heart.
Someone had tried to harm Ethan.
Whoever was responsible...
Would have to face him first.
From the shadows across the street, Meredith watched Jeremy leave.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
"So..."
"You're finally starting to choose them over me."
"Fine, Jeremy."
"Let's see how long you can protect your perfect little family."
