The hospital corridor erupted into chaos.

Red emergency lights flashed across the walls as nurses rushed past the room.

Clara's fingers trembled beneath my grip.

For three years, I had trusted her more than anyone.

Now I knew she had helped destroy my life.

But her fear told me something even more important.

She wasn't the person they were most afraid of.

Someone else was coming.

The door handle stopped turning.

For several seconds, there was complete silence.

Then the door slammed inward.

Two men in dark tactical clothing stormed into the room.

Clara screamed.

I grabbed the metal IV stand beside my bed and swung it toward the first man.

He stumbled backward.

The second man raised his weapon.

Before he could fire, the hallway exploded with gunshots.

Detectives rushed past the doorway.

The man lowered his weapon and ran.

I watched him disappear into the smoke-filled corridor.

Daniel appeared moments later.

“Are you hurt?”

I shook my head.

“Clara knows something.”

His eyes immediately moved toward her.

She stood frozen beside the bed.

“Tell him,” I said.

“Tell him everything.”

Clara wiped the tears from her face.

“Dimitri wasn't kidnapped because of Lorelei's police work.”

“He was already involved with the organization before the car explosion.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“What kind of involvement?”

Clara swallowed.

“Financial.”

“They used Dimitri's law firm to move money through shell companies.”

“He discovered what they were doing, but instead of reporting them, he made a deal.”

I stared at her.

“What deal?”

“They promised to erase his debts.”

“In exchange, he had to help them disappear and give them access to information from your investigations.”

My stomach turned.

Every time I brought home evidence, Dimitri had been listening.

Every time I told him where I was going, he knew.

He had been sleeping beside me while secretly reporting everything I discovered.

“And Francesca?” I asked.

Clara lowered her voice.

“Francesca found out.”

“She threatened to expose him.”

“Instead of fighting, they made another agreement.”

“They would disappear together.”

“Francesca would take the credit for the investigation, and Dimitri would remain hidden with her.”

I closed my eyes.

“What about Leo?”

Clara's face crumpled.

“Leo wasn't supposed to stay with them forever.”

“They planned to return him once everything was over.”

“But after three years, he no longer remembers the life he had with you the way he once did.”

My throat tightened.

“So they turned my own son against me.”

Clara didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Daniel took the envelope from her hand.

“There's something else.”

Clara nodded.

“The organization didn't just protect Dimitri and Francesca.”

“Someone inside the department protected them too.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Who?”

Clara looked directly at me.

“Your former captain.”

I felt the room tilt beneath me.

My captain had been one of the few people I believed had treated me fairly.

He had suspended me, yes.

But I had always believed he had done it because the evidence against me was overwhelming.

Now I understood.

He hadn't been investigating me.

He had been controlling me.

“He approved every fake lead,” Clara whispered.

“He knew where you would go.”

“He knew which agents would stay away from you.”

“And he made sure no one looked too closely at the explosion.”

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

“I'll get a warrant.”

“Don't.”

I stopped him.

He looked at me.

“If he's still connected to them, he'll know we're coming.”

I pointed toward the security camera above the hospital entrance.

“They already know we're here.”

Daniel followed my gaze.

“Then what do you suggest?”

I looked at Clara.

“We give them what they want.”

She stared at me in confusion.

“What?”

I smiled for the first time in days.

“Me.”

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“Absolutely not.”

“They think I'm desperate.”

“They think I'm wounded, angry, and willing to do anything for revenge.”

“That's exactly what I need them to believe.”

Clara's face went pale.

“Lorelei, what are you planning?”

I looked toward the hospital window.

Outside, the same black SUV from earlier was parked across the street.

This time, I wasn't afraid.

I knew exactly where they wanted me to go.

And this time, I would be the one setting the trap.
