I walked out of the hospital through the back entrance just before midnight.
Daniel followed several steps behind me, while a surveillance team watched from the surrounding buildings.
The black SUV was still waiting across the street.
Exactly as I expected.
I entered an abandoned parking garage and stopped beneath a broken security light.
Within minutes, footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Dimitri appeared first.
Francesca was beside him.
And behind them stood my mother.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
They had brought my entire family to finish what they had started.
Dimitri looked at me with the same expression he had worn when I fell from the rooftop.
“Lorelei, this has gone far enough.”
I smiled bitterly.
“You're right.”
“It has.”
Francesca stepped forward.
“Give us the evidence, and we'll disappear for good.”
“No more lies.”
“No more fake deaths.”
“No more chasing you.”
I looked at her.
“You expect me to believe you?”
She shook her head.
“You don't have to.”
“You just have to understand that we have Leo.”
My heart stopped.
My mother stepped forward.
“Your son is safe.”
“If you cooperate, you'll see him again.”
I stared at the three people who had destroyed every part of my life.
Then I laughed.
“That's your mistake.”
Dimitri frowned.
“What?”
I raised my phone.
“You brought Leo here.”
“You brought Francesca.”
“You brought my mother.”
“And you brought enough witnesses to prove everything.”
The garage suddenly filled with sirens.
Floodlights exploded across the darkness.
Federal agents poured through every entrance.
Dimitri's face turned white.
Francesca stumbled backward.
My mother screamed.
“You set us up!”
I looked directly at her.
“No.”
“You set yourselves up three years ago.”
Agents surrounded them before anyone could escape.
Dimitri tried to run.
Daniel tackled him to the ground.
Francesca began crying as handcuffs closed around her wrists.
My mother kept screaming that we were family.
That I had ruined everything.
That I should forgive them.
For the first time, her words meant nothing to me.
Then I heard a small voice behind the agents.
“Mom?”
I turned.
Leo was standing there.
He looked frightened and confused.
For three years, I had dreamed about seeing my son again.
I had imagined running toward him.
I had imagined him calling me Mommy.
Instead, I stayed where I was.
I didn't want to frighten him.
“Leo,” I whispered.
He stared at me for a long moment.
Then tears filled his eyes.
“Mommy?”
That one word shattered the last wall around my heart.
I walked toward him slowly.
He ran the rest of the way.
When he threw his arms around me, I held him as tightly as I could.
“I'm here,” I whispered.
“I'm not going anywhere.”
Behind us, Dimitri was being taken away.
Francesca was crying.
My mother had finally stopped shouting.
None of it mattered anymore.
Weeks later, the investigation exposed the entire organization.
The fake kidnapping.
The staged explosion.
The stolen evidence.
The false undercover operation.
The bribed officials.
The fabricated leads that had nearly killed me.
Everything came to light.
Francesca lost her career and was charged for her role in the conspiracy.
Dimitri faced multiple federal charges.
The corrupt officials who had protected them were arrested one after another.
My police record was cleared.
The department publicly acknowledged that I had been the real investigator behind the case.
But I didn't return to the life I had before.
I had lost too much to pretend nothing had happened.
I resigned from the NYPD.
I wanted something different.
Something that belonged to me.
I moved to a quieter neighborhood with Leo.
For the first time in years, I slept without nightmares.
One evening, Leo sat beside me on the balcony.
He took my hand.
“Mommy, are you happy now?”
I looked at him and smiled.
“Yes.”
Not because Dimitri was punished.
Not because Francesca lost everything.
Not because the world finally believed me.
I was happy because I had stopped measuring my worth by the people who betrayed me.
They had taken my husband.
They had taken my career.
They had taken three years of my life.
But they had never taken the part of me that refused to surrender.
I looked toward the sunset and finally let the past go.
I didn't need revenge anymore.
The truth had already done that for me.
And this time, when I walked away from my old life, I didn't look back.
