The dungeon echoed with silence after Marcus's chilling words.
"He's waiting for you... Daughter of the First Bloodline."
Evelyn felt her blood run cold.
"Who is he talking about?" she whispered.
Marcus's lips curled into a cruel smile.
"The one who has watched you since the day you were born."
"The Shadow King."
Thaddeus stepped forward, dark energy radiating from his body.
"Enough riddles."
"Tell me where Malachar is."
Marcus chuckled.
"Kill me if you wish."
"Death no longer frightens those who serve the Shadow King."
Without warning, black smoke poured from Marcus's mouth and eyes.
"He's poisoning himself!" Orion shouted.
Ryland lunged toward the magical cage, but it was too late.
Marcus's body crumbled into black ash.
Only one object remained on the stone floor.
A silver key engraved with ancient runes.
Orion carefully picked it up.
"This..."
"This is one of the Temple Keys."
"Then we know where we're going," Thaddeus said.
The next evening...
As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, the four companions stood before an ancient canyon.
Towering cliffs surrounded a forgotten valley hidden from the world.
At its center stood a massive stone gate nearly two hundred feet high.
Its surface was covered with glowing symbols identical to the mark over Evelyn's heart.
"The Temple of Souls," Asterion announced.
"No living creature has entered these halls in over two thousand years."
Evelyn stared up at the enormous entrance.
"It feels... alive."
"It is," the dragon replied.
"The temple judges every soul that enters."
"Only those worthy may leave."
Thaddeus inserted the silver key into a hidden slot.
The entire mountain began to shake.
Ancient gears groaned as the enormous stone doors slowly opened.
A wave of silver light poured from within.
"Stay close," Orion warned.
"The temple creates illusions from your deepest fears."
"Don't trust everything you see."
Together, they stepped inside.
The massive doors slammed shut behind them.
Darkness swallowed the entrance.
Moments later, glowing blue flames ignited along the walls.
The temple stretched endlessly before them.
Ancient statues lined both sides of the hallway.
Each one appeared to be watching them.
"This place gives me the creeps," Ryland muttered.
Suddenly, a deep voice echoed through the chamber.
"First Trial..."
"Face Your Past."
The floor beneath them glowed brightly.
Silver circles surrounded each member of the group.
"What's happening?" Evelyn asked.
Before anyone could answer...
Everything disappeared.
Evelyn found herself standing inside a familiar house.
Her childhood home.
"Mom? Dad?"
Laughter echoed from the kitchen.
Her adoptive parents stood there smiling exactly as she remembered.
"Welcome home, sweetheart," her mother said warmly.
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"You're... alive?"
"We never left," her father replied.
"Stay with us."
"Forget the darkness."
"Forget the prophecy."
Meanwhile...
Thaddeus stood inside another illusion.
His parents smiled proudly at him.
"Come home, son," his mother whispered.
"Everything can be like it was before."
For one painful moment...
He wanted to believe it.
Then he remembered.
"You're not real," he growled.
Darkness shattered the illusion into thousands of fragments.
Ryland faced the ghosts of everyone he had killed.
Orion stood before the family he had lost centuries ago.
Each of them fought their own memories.
Back in her illusion...
Evelyn hugged her mother tightly.
"I missed you so much..."
"Then stay," her mother whispered.
"You don't need them."
"You don't need Thaddeus."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
She wanted this to be real more than anything.
But deep inside...
She felt the Eternal Bond.
She could sense Thaddeus fighting somewhere nearby.
She remembered his lonely eyes.
His silent sacrifices.
His promise to protect her.
Slowly, she stepped back.
"You're not my mother."
"She would never ask me to abandon people who need me."
The illusion cracked.
Silver light erupted from Evelyn's chest.
The entire vision shattered.
She found herself back inside the temple.
One by one, the others returned as well.
The mysterious voice echoed once more.
"First Trial... Completed."
"Second Trial Begins."
The floor split apart beneath their feet.
A bottomless abyss opened before them.
From the darkness below...
A pair of enormous crimson eyes slowly opened.
