The crimson eyes stared from the endless abyss beneath their feet.
An overwhelming pressure filled the ancient temple.
Even Thaddeus instinctively stepped in front of Evelyn.
"Stay behind me," he ordered.
"Not this time," Evelyn replied firmly.
"We're facing this together."
A deep, ancient voice echoed through the chamber.
"Second Trial..."
"Face Your Greatest Fear."
The abyss erupted with crimson flames.
A monstrous creature slowly emerged.
It stood nearly thirty feet tall.
Its body was made entirely of living shadows, while glowing red cracks pulsed across its skin like molten lava.
Massive black wings stretched behind it.
Its eyes burned with endless hatred.
"The Shadow Guardian," Orion whispered.
"The protector of the Heart of Elysium."
"Defeat it..."
"Or remain trapped here forever."
The creature roared.
The entire temple shook violently.
Without warning, it charged.
Ryland shifted into his enormous wolf form and leaped first.
His claws slashed across the monster's chest.
The wounds healed instantly.
"It's regenerating!" Ryland shouted.
Orion launched crimson energy spears.
They exploded against the Guardian's body.
Again...
It healed within seconds.
"Normal magic won't work," Orion warned.
Thaddeus raised his obsidian blade.
Darkness erupted around him.
"Then we'll overwhelm it."
He disappeared in a blur.
The clash echoed throughout the temple.
Sword met claws.
Darkness collided with shadow.
Shockwaves shattered nearby pillars.
Despite his overwhelming strength...
The Guardian matched every attack.
"Impossible," Thaddeus growled.
"It's copying your power," Asterion's voice echoed from somewhere beyond the chamber.
"The Guardian mirrors darkness."
"Then how do we kill it?" Evelyn yelled.
"You don't."
"You purify it."
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
The silver mark over her heart glowed brightly.
"Your light is the only force it cannot imitate."
The Guardian suddenly abandoned Thaddeus.
Its burning eyes locked directly onto Evelyn.
"Protect her!" Ryland roared.
The monster lunged.
Everything happened within seconds.
Thaddeus threw himself between them.
The Guardian's claw pierced straight through his chest.
"THADDEUS!" Evelyn screamed.
Time seemed to stop.
Blood dripped onto the temple floor.
Ryland and Orion attacked desperately, forcing the creature backward.
Thaddeus collapsed to one knee.
Dark blood stained the ancient stone beneath him.
"No..." Evelyn whispered as tears filled her eyes.
She rushed toward him.
"Stay back," he gasped.
"You'll die..."
"I don't care!"
She grabbed his hand.
The Eternal Bond exploded with blinding light.
Silver energy flowed from Evelyn into Thaddeus.
His wound began healing before everyone's eyes.
At the same time...
Golden light erupted from Evelyn's body.
The Guardian staggered backward.
It screamed in agony.
"Now!" Orion shouted.
"Use your light!"
Evelyn stood.
Closing her eyes, she stopped fighting the strange power inside her.
Instead...
She embraced it.
The warmth spread through every part of her body.
Silver wings of pure light unfolded behind her.
The entire temple illuminated.
"Impossible..." Ryland whispered.
"She's fully awakened."
Evelyn lifted her hand.
"No more darkness."
A beam of brilliant silver light shot toward the Guardian.
The creature howled as darkness peeled away from its body.
The monstrous form slowly transformed.
The shadow disappeared.
Standing in its place was an ancient armored knight.
He knelt before Evelyn.
"Thank you..." he whispered.
"I have guarded this temple for two thousand years."
"At last... I am free."
His body dissolved into golden particles.
The ground trembled once more.
A staircase slowly rose from the abyss.
At its summit floated a crystal unlike anything they had ever seen.
Half of it glowed silver.
The other half shimmered with gentle darkness.
"The Heart of Elysium," Orion breathed.
"We've found it."
As Evelyn stepped toward the crystal...
A cold laugh echoed throughout the temple.
"Congratulations..."
"You saved me a great deal of work."
A portal of black flames opened behind the crystal.
Malachar slowly walked through it.
Behind him...
A gigantic figure cloaked entirely in living darkness emerged.
Its glowing crimson eyes opened.
The air itself froze.
"Allow me to introduce..." Malachar smiled.
"The Shadow King."
