Silvercrest welcomed its Alpha and Luna home beneath gray skies.
Servants lined the entrance, warriors saluted, and the palace resumed its usual rhythm.
To everyone else, nothing had changed.
Only Seraphina knew she was seeing it all for the last time.
She spent the next two days carrying out her duties exactly as she always had.
She inspected the infirmary.
She approved the winter food reserves.
She trained young warriors in the courtyard.
She smiled at the servants who greeted her.
No one suspected she was quietly saying goodbye.
That evening, Elder Marcus approached her in the library.
"You've been unusually peaceful," he observed.
Seraphina closed the book she had been reading.
"Is that a bad thing?"
"No."
The elderly wolf smiled sadly.
"But peace often comes just before someone leaves home."
She looked at him in surprise.
"You always could read people too well."
"Am I wrong?"
Several moments passed before she finally answered.
"No."
Marcus lowered his head.
"Have you told Kael?"
"Not yet."
"He deserves to know."
"If I tell him now... he'll stop me."
"Perhaps."
"And if he does, neither of us will ever be free."
Marcus sighed deeply.
"Whatever path you choose, Luna... never forget who you are."
"I won't."
Later that night, Seraphina quietly entered the palace treasury.
She removed her Luna crown and placed it carefully inside a velvet-lined chest.
Next came the ceremonial necklace given to her during her coronation.
Then the silver cloak embroidered with the Silvercrest crest.
One by one, she returned every symbol of her title.
The only thing she kept was the simple pendant her mother had given her before she died.
"This is enough," she whispered.
Back in her chambers, she packed only what she truly needed.
A change of clothes.
Medical supplies.
A hunting knife.
The ancient journal she had found in the archive.
And the mysterious parchment marked with the black crescent moon.
Nothing more.
Around midnight, she quietly opened the chamber door.
Before stepping outside, she looked back one final time.
Every memory filled the room.
Every laugh.
Every promise.
Every dream.
"Goodbye," she whispered.
She quietly closed the door behind her.
The palace corridors were empty.
Moonlight poured through the stained-glass windows as she made her way toward the eastern gate.
Halfway there, a familiar voice stopped her.
"Leaving without saying goodbye?"
Seraphina slowly turned around.
Evelyn stood in the hallway.
Her eyes were already filled with tears.
"You knew."
"I've known for days."
"Why didn't you stop me?"
Evelyn smiled through her tears.
"Because friends don't keep each other inside cages."
The two women embraced tightly.
"Will I ever see you again?" Evelyn whispered.
"I hope so."
"Promise me you'll stay alive."
"I promise."
Evelyn reached into her pocket and handed Seraphina a small leather pouch.
"Travel herbs," she explained.
"And dried food."
"Thank you."
"Take care of yourself."
"You too."
Without another word, Seraphina continued toward the palace gates.
The guards bowed respectfully.
"Good evening, Luna."
"Good evening."
"Will you require an escort?"
"No."
"I'm only taking a walk through the forest."
"As you wish."
The massive gates slowly opened.
Seraphina stepped beyond them.
She didn't look back.
Deep inside the palace, Kael suddenly sat upright in his office.
His wolf became restless.
An unfamiliar emptiness spread through his chest.
"Something's wrong," he muttered.
He rushed toward their chambers.
The room was empty.
The wardrobe doors stood open.
Her Luna robes were gone.
Only a folded letter rested on the pillow.
His hands trembled as he unfolded it.
"Kael," it began.
"If you're reading this, I've already left."
"Please don't follow me."
"You once promised to protect my happiness."
"Now I'm asking you to let me find it."
"Don't hate yourself."
"Don't hate Lyra."
"None of this was your fault."
"Thank you for every beautiful memory we shared."
"They'll stay with me forever."
"Goodbye."
"—Seraphina."
The letter slipped from Kael's fingers.
"No..."
He sprinted through the palace.
"Rowan!"
"Sound the alarm!"
"Search every road!"
"Every forest!"
"Find her!"
War horns echoed across Silvercrest.
Warriors rushed toward the gates.
But Seraphina was already far beyond the pack's borders.
She followed the northern stars exactly as the mysterious letter had instructed.
Hour after hour, she walked deeper into lands no Silvercrest wolf dared enter.
As dawn broke, towering black mountains appeared on the horizon.
The Shadowlands.
She stopped at the edge of the ancient forest.
For a brief moment, fear crept into her heart.
Then she remembered the pain she had left behind.
Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward.
Hidden among the towering trees, crimson eyes watched her every movement.
"Welcome," the Dark Alpha whispered from the shadows.
"I've been waiting for you, Seraphina."
