The forest fell eerily silent.
Not a single bird sang.
Not even the wind dared disturb the towering black pines surrounding Seraphina.
She tightened her grip around the hunting knife at her waist.
"Who's there?" she called.
No answer came.
Only the faint crunch of footsteps echoed through the trees.
Then he appeared.
A tall man emerged from the shadows wearing a long black coat trimmed with silver fur.
His raven-black hair rested against broad shoulders, while crimson eyes studied her with calm curiosity.
He radiated authority unlike anything she had ever witnessed.
Even Kael had never possessed such an overwhelming presence.
"You've traveled a long way," the stranger said.
"Welcome to the Shadowlands."
Seraphina instinctively stepped backward.
"Who are you?"
"People call me many things."
"The Shadow King."
"The Dark Alpha."
"Orion's nightmare."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"But my name is Darius."
"You know who I am," Seraphina said cautiously.
"I've known about you for a very long time."
"How?"
"Because fate isn't the only force that watches this world."
Before she could question him further, dozens of wolves silently emerged from the surrounding forest.
They didn't threaten her.
Instead, every one of them bowed their heads toward Darius.
"My Alpha," one warrior said.
"The northern border is secure."
"Good," Darius replied without taking his eyes off Seraphina.
"Prepare a guest room inside the fortress."
"She's under my protection now."
The warriors nodded immediately.
Seraphina frowned.
"I never asked for your protection."
"No," Darius answered calmly.
"But you crossed into my territory."
"Out here, every traveler becomes my responsibility."
"I can protect myself."
One corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
"I'm sure you can."
"Your reputation as the Warrior Luna reached these mountains years ago."
Her eyes widened.
"You've been watching Silvercrest?"
"Watching the kingdoms."
"There's a difference."
He turned toward a narrow mountain path.
"Walk with me."
"I don't even know if I can trust you."
"Then don't."
"Trust isn't given."
"It's earned."
His straightforward answer caught her off guard.
After a brief hesitation, she followed.
The mountain trail twisted between enormous cliffs until a massive fortress came into view.
Unlike the elegant castles of the northern packs, this fortress had been carved directly into black stone.
Towering walls stretched toward the clouds.
Countless banners bearing a black crescent moon fluttered above the gates.
"This is..."
"Shadow Keep," Darius finished.
"Home to wolves the kingdoms abandoned."
As they entered the fortress, Seraphina noticed something unexpected.
There were children laughing in the courtyards.
Families eating together.
Warriors training side by side.
There were no frightened faces.
No starving rogues.
No signs of cruelty.
It looked... peaceful.
"This isn't what I expected," she admitted.
"Most people expect monsters."
"Instead?"
"They find people who simply refused to kneel."
An elderly woman approached them carrying a basket of herbs.
"Welcome home, my Alpha," she smiled warmly.
Then she turned toward Seraphina.
"And welcome, child."
"Thank you," Seraphina replied politely.
The woman bowed before continuing on her way.
Seraphina looked back at Darius.
"Your people seem to respect you."
"Respect cannot be demanded."
"Only earned."
"You sound different from every Alpha I've ever met."
"That's because I don't believe strength comes from fear."
Those words lingered in her thoughts.
For years she had lived among rulers who believed power meant dominance.
Darius spoke of responsibility instead.
He led her to a quiet balcony overlooking the endless mountains.
"You'll be safe here," he said.
"For as long as you wish to stay."
"And if I choose to leave tomorrow?"
"Then I'll personally escort you to the border."
"No conditions?"
"None."
"No bargains."
"No debts."
"Freedom means little if it comes with chains."
Seraphina stared at him silently.
She had expected manipulation.
Instead, she found kindness.
Far away in Silvercrest, Kael stood in Seraphina's empty chambers.
Days had passed since her disappearance.
Search parties returned one after another without success.
"Nothing," Rowan reported quietly.
"We've searched every village and every neighboring pack."
"There's no trace of her."
Kael looked toward the open balcony.
His wolf remained restless.
The bond connecting him to Seraphina hadn't broken.
It had simply grown... distant.
"Expand the search beyond the northern border," he ordered.
"Even the Shadowlands?" Rowan asked carefully.
Kael didn't hesitate.
"Especially the Shadowlands."
Back atop the fortress walls, Darius watched storm clouds gathering over the northern peaks.
"He'll come for you," he said without turning around.
Seraphina looked at him.
"Kael?"
"Yes."
"And when he does... you'll have to decide whether you're running from your past..."
He finally met her eyes.
"...or walking toward your future."
