A week passed inside Shadow Keep.
For the first time in months, Seraphina woke without the weight of endless expectations pressing against her chest.
There were no council meetings waiting for her.
No whispers behind her back.
No painful reminders of a bond she could never compete against.
Only the quiet sounds of the mountains greeting another sunrise.
She stood on the balcony outside her room, breathing in the crisp northern air.
The Shadowlands were nothing like the terrifying stories told throughout the kingdoms.
Children laughed in the courtyards.
Farmers worked fertile valleys hidden between the cliffs.
Blacksmiths forged weapons while merchants traded peacefully in the market square.
This wasn't a kingdom of monsters.
It was a sanctuary.
"You're awake early."
Seraphina turned.
Darius climbed the stone staircase carrying two wooden cups.
"Tea?" he offered.
She accepted it with a small nod.
"Thank you."
They stood side by side in silence for several moments.
"You've been observing my people," Darius finally said.
"They're different from what I expected," Seraphina admitted.
"Most visitors say that."
"Why does everyone believe the Shadowlands are filled with ruthless rogues?"
Darius gave a quiet laugh.
"Because history is written by those in power."
"The northern packs needed an enemy."
"We became that enemy."
His answer lingered in her thoughts.
Later that morning, Seraphina wandered through the fortress alone.
Several children ran past her, chasing a handmade wooden wolf.
One little girl suddenly tripped and scraped her knee.
"Ow!"
Without thinking, Seraphina hurried over.
"Let me see."
The injury was minor.
She carefully cleaned the wound before wrapping it with a clean strip of cloth from her pouch.
"Better?"
The little girl smiled brightly.
"Much better! Thank you, Miss."
Her mother approached moments later.
"I'm so sorry for troubling you."
"It wasn't any trouble," Seraphina replied warmly.
"You have gentle hands," the woman said.
"Our healer mentioned you once served as a Luna."
Seraphina nodded quietly.
"I used to."
"Then our people are fortunate you're here."
Those simple words caught her off guard.
No one had thanked her simply for helping in a very long time.
That afternoon, Darius invited her to watch the warriors train.
The training grounds overlooked the western cliffs.
Unlike Silvercrest's strict military drills, these warriors laughed between matches.
They encouraged one another after every defeat.
"They're... different," Seraphina observed.
"Winning isn't everything here," Darius answered.
"Everyone trains so the weakest among us can sleep peacefully."
"That's an unusual philosophy for an Alpha."
"Perhaps."
"But fear builds obedient soldiers."
"Respect builds loyal families."
Before she could respond, one of the younger warriors approached.
"My Alpha," he bowed.
"Would Lady Seraphina honor us with a sparring match?"
Darius looked toward her.
"Only if you wish."
A faint smile finally appeared on Seraphina's face.
"It's been a while."
Moments later, she stepped onto the training field.
The young warrior rushed forward confidently.
Within seconds, Seraphina sidestepped his attack, twisted his wrist, and gently knocked him onto his back.
The watching warriors burst into laughter.
"Again!" the young man shouted excitedly.
"I wasn't ready!"
Even Seraphina laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh she'd shared since leaving Silvercrest.
Darius noticed it immediately.
His expression softened.
That evening, while the fortress celebrated another successful hunting expedition, a scout arrived at the main gate.
"My Alpha," he said urgently.
"We've received news from the southern border."
Darius dismissed everyone else before speaking.
"Report."
"Silvercrest search parties have entered the outer forests."
"Alpha Kael is leading them personally."
Seraphina's smile faded.
"He's already here..." she whispered.
Darius looked toward the distant mountains.
"He's closer than I expected."
"Will he attack?" Seraphina asked.
"No."
"Not unless someone gives him a reason."
"Then I'll leave before he arrives."
Darius turned to face her.
"Why?"
"Because I won't bring war to your people."
"You won't."
"But—"
"Seraphina."
His voice remained calm.
"Everyone who enters Shadow Keep under my protection remains safe."
"That includes you."
"Even against another Alpha?"
"Especially against another Alpha."
His confidence wasn't arrogant.
It was absolute.
Far beyond the mountains, Kael stood at the edge of the Shadowlands.
His warriors waited behind him.
"No one crosses the border without my order," he commanded.
"I came to bring my Luna home... not start a war."
Captain Rowan nodded.
"Understood, Alpha."
As night settled across the mountains, two Alphas stared toward the same horizon.
One was searching for the woman he had lost.
The other was preparing to protect the woman who had finally found peace.
Neither realized that destiny was already leading them toward an inevitable confrontation.
