Morning mist blanketed the border between the Shadowlands and the northern kingdoms.
Silvercrest warriors stood silently beneath towering pine trees, awaiting their Alpha's command.
Kael's eyes never left the massive black gates in the distance.
Somewhere beyond them...
Seraphina was alive.
He could feel it.
"Alpha," Rowan said carefully, "our scouts confirmed she's inside Shadow Keep."
"Any sign she's being held against her will?"
"None."
"The civilians describe her walking freely through the fortress."
Kael frowned.
"Freely..."
That single word unsettled him more than captivity ever could.
"Request a meeting," Kael ordered.
"No weapons. No threats."
"I came to speak—not to conquer."
"Yes, Alpha."
An hour later, the enormous gates of Shadow Keep slowly opened.
A small escort of black-armored warriors emerged.
At their head rode Darius.
His crimson eyes met Kael's calm blue gaze without fear.
"Alpha Kael," Darius greeted.
"Dark Alpha," Kael replied.
"You've crossed into my borders peacefully."
"I intend to leave the same way."
"That depends on why you've come."
Kael took one step forward.
"I'm here for my Luna."
Darius remained silent for several seconds.
"Your former Luna," he corrected calmly.
Kael's jaw tightened.
"She is still my wife."
"Legally, perhaps."
"Emotionally... only she can answer that."
"I want to see her."
"I'll ask her."
"You need her permission?"
Darius's expression never changed.
"Everyone inside my territory chooses who they meet."
"Even guests."
"Especially guests."
Kael realized arguing would accomplish nothing.
"Then ask her."
"If she refuses?"
"I'll accept her answer."
Darius studied him quietly before nodding once.
"Wait here."
Inside the fortress, Seraphina was helping prepare medicines for the infirmary when Darius entered.
"Kael is at the gate," he said.
Her hands froze instantly.
"Already?"
"He came alone with a small escort."
"He wants to speak with you."
Silence settled over the room.
"Do I have to?"
"No."
"The choice is entirely yours."
She lowered her eyes.
"If I refuse... he'll keep searching."
"Probably."
"Then I'll speak with him."
"Not because I'm returning."
"Because we both deserve closure."
Darius simply nodded.
"I'll remain nearby."
"Not to interfere."
"Only to ensure no one crosses your boundaries."
A short time later, Seraphina stepped through the fortress gates.
Kael's breath caught the instant he saw her.
She looked healthier.
Her face carried color again.
Most surprising of all...
She was smiling.
Not the forced smile she had worn inside Silvercrest.
A genuine one.
"Seraphina..."
He took a hesitant step forward.
"You found me," she said softly.
"I never stopped looking."
"I know."
"Come home."
The words hung between them.
Seraphina slowly shook her head.
"This is my home now."
"No."
"Silvercrest is your home."
"Silvercrest was the place where I learned love."
"This is the place where I'm learning to love myself again."
Kael's heart tightened painfully.
"I can fix this."
"Can you?"
"I'll reject the mate bond if I have to."
"You'll destroy your wolf."
"I don't care."
"I do."
Her voice remained calm.
"I won't let you ruin your life to ease my guilt."
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
"Live."
"Lead your people."
"Stop chasing someone who's already chosen a different road."
Tears filled Kael's eyes.
"Do you... love him?"
The unexpected question caught Seraphina completely off guard.
She instinctively glanced toward Darius, who stood several meters away, deliberately giving them privacy.
"No," she answered honestly.
"Not yet."
"Then why stay?"
"Because for the first time in months... I can breathe."
"No one here expects me to compete with fate."
"No one pities me."
"They simply see me."
Kael lowered his head.
"I should've seen you sooner."
"You did."
"For many years, you did."
"Don't let one tragedy erase everything good we shared."
A long silence followed.
Finally, Kael reached into his coat.
He removed the silver ring she had returned weeks earlier.
"I'll keep this," he said quietly.
"Not as a reminder of what I lost..."
"But of what I was fortunate enough to have."
Seraphina smiled through tears.
"Thank you."
Kael stepped back.
"I won't force you to come home."
"Not today."
"Not ever."
He turned toward his warriors.
"We're leaving."
Rowan looked surprised but obeyed immediately.
As the Silvercrest delegation disappeared into the forest, Seraphina quietly wiped away a tear.
Darius walked to her side.
"Are you alright?"
"I think... I finally said goodbye."
Darius looked toward the distant mountains where Kael had vanished.
"Sometimes," he said quietly,
"letting go requires more courage than holding on."
Seraphina nodded.
For the first time since fate had shattered her world...
She truly believed the future belonged to her.
