The days following Kael's departure were surprisingly peaceful.
For the first time in years, Seraphina woke each morning without wondering whether she was enough.
She no longer waited for footsteps outside her door.
She no longer feared another painful reminder of fate.
Instead, she found herself slowly settling into life inside Shadow Keep.
Every sunrise brought new responsibilities.
She helped the healers prepare medicines.
She trained young warriors in hand-to-hand combat.
She even began teaching children how to identify healing herbs growing along the mountainside.
Little by little, the fortress stopped feeling like a refuge.
It began feeling like home.
"Miss Seraphina!"
A group of children ran toward her carrying wooden practice swords.
"Will you teach us today?"
She laughed softly.
"Only if you promise not to hit each other in the face."
"We promise!"
Their cheerful voices echoed through the training grounds.
Watching from a nearby balcony, Darius folded his arms.
"I've never seen them listen to anyone so quickly," one of his commanders remarked.
"Neither have I," Darius admitted.
"She doesn't command respect through fear."
"She earns it."
The commander smiled knowingly.
"Much like you, my Alpha."
Darius said nothing.
His crimson eyes remained fixed on Seraphina.
Later that afternoon, she joined Darius for a routine patrol along the northern cliffs.
Snow crunched beneath their boots as they walked side by side.
"Your people seem happy," Seraphina observed.
"Most of them have suffered before arriving here," Darius replied.
"Some were rejected by their packs.
Others lost their families during territorial wars.
Many were simply different."
"So you gave them a place to belong."
"Everyone deserves one."
His answer made her smile.
"You really are nothing like the stories."
"Legends rarely tell the entire truth."
As they continued walking, they heard shouting from below.
"Help!"
"Someone help!"
Without hesitation, both of them sprinted toward the sound.
Near the edge of a frozen ravine, a young boy clung desperately to a broken tree branch.
The ice beneath him cracked louder with every passing second.
"Stay still!" Seraphina called.
"We're coming!"
She immediately tied a rope around her waist.
"I'll go down," she said.
"It's too dangerous," Darius replied.
"The ice won't support two people."
"Exactly."
"Which is why only one of us should risk it."
Before Darius could argue further, Seraphina carefully lowered herself toward the frightened child.
"Don't look down," she encouraged gently.
"Just keep looking at me."
"I'm scared," the boy whispered.
"I know."
"But you're not alone anymore."
Reaching him, she wrapped one arm around his shoulders.
"Pull us up!"
The warriors above immediately began hauling on the rope.
Just as they reached solid ground, the frozen ledge collapsed into the ravine below.
Everyone released a relieved breath.
The little boy threw his arms around Seraphina.
"Thank you!"
"You were very brave," she said, brushing snow from his hair.
Watching the scene, Darius quietly smiled.
"You didn't hesitate," he said once the others had left.
"Neither did you."
"You trusted me."
"I trusted your strength."
"There's a difference."
She looked at him curiously.
"What's the difference?"
"Strength saves people."
"Trust saves hearts."
Their eyes met.
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't awkward.
It was comfortable.
Back in Silvercrest, Kael stood inside the palace training yard.
His warriors sparred around him, but his mind remained elsewhere.
"Alpha," Rowan approached carefully.
"The council believes it's time to stop the search."
Kael remained silent.
"Every report says the same thing," Rowan continued.
"Luna Seraphina is safe."
"She isn't being held prisoner."
"She chose to stay."
Kael slowly closed his eyes.
"I know."
"Then what are your orders?"
After a long pause, Kael looked toward the northern mountains.
"Withdraw every patrol from the Shadowlands."
"No one is to cross that border again unless invited."
Rowan looked surprised.
"Understood, Alpha."
As the captain walked away, Kael whispered quietly to himself.
"Be happy... even if it isn't with me."
That evening, Shadow Keep celebrated the successful rescue of the young boy.
Music echoed throughout the fortress while families gathered around enormous bonfires.
One of the children tugged gently on Seraphina's sleeve.
"Miss Seraphina..."
"Yes?"
"You're smiling a lot more now."
She paused.
Only then did she realize the child was right.
She touched her own lips.
She was smiling.
Not because she was pretending.
Not because someone expected her to.
But because, somewhere along the way...
Her heart had finally begun to heal.
Standing across the courtyard, Darius watched her laugh with the children.
A faint smile appeared on his own face.
"Welcome home," he whispered softly, though only the wind heard his words.
