Rain poured over Silvercrest Palace throughout the night.
Dark clouds swallowed the moon, leaving the castle wrapped in silence. Seraphina stood beneath the covered terrace, watching droplets strike the stone courtyard below. Storms had always brought her peace, but tonight even the rain failed to quiet the turmoil inside her.
She sensed Kael approaching before hearing his footsteps.
"You haven't slept again," he said gently.
"Neither have you," she replied without turning around.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence between them had once been comfortable. Now it was painfully unfamiliar.
"Lyra and Moonvale are leaving after breakfast," Kael finally said.
"I know."
"Does that make things easier?"
Seraphina gave a faint smile.
"Distance doesn't erase destiny."
Kael looked away.
"I'm fighting it."
"I know you are."
"Then trust me."
"I trust the man you are," she answered quietly.
"It's the power of fate that I don't trust."
A palace servant hurried across the courtyard.
"Alpha, the border scouts have returned."
"Any news?" Kael asked.
"The rogue sightings continue. They've been seen moving toward the Shadowlands."
Kael frowned.
"Double every patrol near Black Hollow."
"Yes, Alpha."
After the servant left, Seraphina spoke.
"I'll lead one of the patrols."
"No."
"Kael..."
"Absolutely not."
"You can't keep locking me inside the palace."
"I'm trying to protect you."
"From rogues? Or from yourself?"
His expression tightened.
She had struck the truth.
Kael wasn't afraid of enemies.
He was afraid that every hour he spent away from her pushed her closer to walking out of his life.
Later that morning, Moonvale's delegation prepared to depart.
Servants loaded luggage into elegant white carriages while warriors formed an escort outside the palace gates.
Lyra stood beside her carriage, her silver cloak fluttering in the cold wind.
She watched Seraphina approach.
"Luna..."
"You don't have to call me that if it makes you uncomfortable," Seraphina said with a calm smile.
Lyra quickly shook her head.
"I respect you too much not to."
Those words caught Seraphina off guard.
"Thank you," she replied softly.
Lyra hesitated before continuing.
"I don't intend to come between you and Alpha Kael."
"Intentions don't always matter."
"I know."
"The bond keeps pulling at me."
Seraphina studied her carefully.
There was no arrogance in the young woman's eyes.
Only fear.
The same fear Seraphina had carried since the festival.
"Take care of yourself," Seraphina said sincerely.
"You too."
The women exchanged one final nod before Lyra climbed into the carriage.
Kael watched the convoy disappear beyond the palace gates.
The instant Lyra crossed the pack border, a sharp pain tore through his chest.
His wolf howled violently inside him.
Kael staggered backward.
"Alpha!" Rowan rushed forward, catching him before he fell.
"I'm fine," Kael growled.
"No, you're not," Rowan answered honestly.
Kael pushed himself upright.
The mate bond stretched painfully across the distance, reminding him that Lyra was moving farther away with every passing minute.
Seraphina witnessed everything from the palace steps.
Her heart sank.
She finally understood.
The bond wasn't fading.
It was growing stronger.
That evening, Elder Marcus requested a private audience with Seraphina.
"My Luna," he began carefully.
"I've known you since you first entered this palace."
"I know," she replied.
"Then allow an old wolf to offer advice."
"I'm listening."
"Prepare yourself."
She looked at him silently.
"For what?"
"Because I've lived long enough to know that no Alpha has ever escaped a true mate bond forever."
His words were gentle.
Yet they landed like stones upon her heart.
"Do you believe I'll lose him?"
Marcus sighed deeply.
"I believe difficult days are coming."
"And I believe you'll need more strength than you've ever shown before."
Late that night, Seraphina entered the palace archive alone.
Dust covered the oldest shelves where records dating back centuries were stored.
She searched through ancient journals until one worn leather book caught her attention.
"The History of Rejected Bonds," she read aloud.
Opening the fragile pages, she found stories of Lunas whose mates had found their destined partners.
Some accepted the pain.
Some became bitter.
Some disappeared without leaving a trace.
One passage caught her attention.
"Beyond the northern mountains lies the Shadowlands, where broken wolves seek new beginnings under the protection of the Dark Alpha."
Seraphina frowned.
"The Shadowlands..."
She had always believed those stories were myths told to frighten young wolves.
But now, for the first time, she wondered if they were true.
Far away, beyond forests untouched by civilized packs, a lone raven landed on the shoulder of a tall man dressed entirely in black.
The Dark Alpha removed a small scroll tied to the bird's leg.
After reading its contents, a faint smile appeared on his face.
"So," he murmured.
"The Silvercrest Luna has begun searching for answers."
He folded the message and looked toward the northern horizon.
"Soon, Seraphina Ashwood... our paths will finally cross."
