For the next three days, Silvercrest Palace returned to what appeared to be normal.
The warriors resumed their training.
The council held its regular meetings.
Merchants arrived through the southern gates with wagons full of supplies.
To everyone else, life continued as always.
Only those closest to the Alpha and Luna knew the palace had changed forever.
Seraphina spent most of her time fulfilling her duties.
She inspected the infirmary, reviewed harvest reports, and supervised preparations for the coming winter.
If she stayed busy enough, perhaps she wouldn't have to think.
But every night, the silence waiting inside her chambers reminded her that some wounds refused to heal.
Kael had begun sleeping in his office.
Not because she had asked him to.
Because neither of them knew how to share the same room anymore.
One afternoon, while organizing old medical records inside the palace library, Seraphina heard hurried footsteps approaching.
"My Luna!"
It was Captain Rowan.
"We've captured one of the rogues near Black Hollow."
Seraphina immediately stood.
"Is anyone injured?"
"Only two warriors."
"Take me there."
Minutes later, they entered the underground prison beneath the palace.
The captured rogue sat chained against the stone wall.
He was older than she expected.
His dark beard was streaked with gray, and several old scars covered his arms.
Unlike most rogues, his eyes weren't filled with madness.
They were filled with exhaustion.
"You're the Silvercrest Luna," he said quietly.
"I am."
"Then you deserve to know the truth."
Rowan stepped forward.
"Watch your tongue."
The rogue ignored him.
"The Shadowlands are gathering."
Seraphina frowned.
"Gathering for what?"
"War."
The prison suddenly felt much colder.
"Against whom?" Rowan demanded.
The rogue slowly smiled.
"Against fate itself."
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
"The Dark Alpha is searching for someone."
"Who?"
The rogue looked directly at Seraphina.
"A Luna whose destiny has been stolen."
Rowan immediately grabbed the prison bars.
"Enough!"
"Take him away for questioning."
The guards dragged the rogue toward another cell.
Even as he disappeared into the darkness, his laughter echoed through the corridor.
"Tell your Alpha... the prophecy has already begun!"
Back upstairs, Rowan tried to dismiss the strange conversation.
"He's trying to frighten us."
Seraphina remained thoughtful.
"Maybe."
"You don't believe him, do you?"
"I don't know what to believe anymore."
That evening, Kael finally returned to their chambers.
He looked tired.
More tired than she had ever seen him.
"Rowan told me about the rogue," he said.
"What do you think?"
"I think someone wants us to be afraid."
"And are you?"
Kael hesitated.
"Yes."
She looked at him in surprise.
"Not because of rogues," he admitted.
"Because I can feel myself changing."
"Changing how?"
"Every day the mate bond grows stronger."
"Even with Lyra gone."
Kael nodded slowly.
"I dream about her."
The confession struck Seraphina harder than she expected.
"Dreams aren't choices," she whispered.
"No... but waking up is."
He stepped closer.
"Every morning I choose you."
"For how much longer?"
Kael had no answer.
His silence spoke louder than words.
Seraphina walked toward the window.
"When we married," she said softly,
"I thought love would always be enough."
"It should be."
"Maybe for humans."
"But wolves belong to fate first."
Kael clenched his fists.
"I won't lose you."
"Then stop making promises you can't control."
He closed his eyes.
For the first time in his life, Alpha Kael Draven realized there were enemies even an Alpha couldn't defeat.
Later that night, Seraphina returned to the ancient archive.
She continued reading the old journal she had discovered.
Several pages had been torn away.
But near the end, one passage remained untouched.
"When the Moon rejects her chosen daughter, the Shadow King shall offer a different path. One built not upon destiny... but upon choice."
Beneath the passage was an unfamiliar symbol.
A black crescent moon surrounded by silver flames.
She carefully traced it with her fingertips.
"What does it mean?" she whispered.
Suddenly, a folded parchment slipped from between the ancient pages and landed at her feet.
It looked far newer than the book itself.
Confused, she unfolded it.
Only a single sentence had been written in elegant black ink.
"When your heart can bear no more, follow the northern stars."
No signature.
No explanation.
Only the same black crescent moon marked at the bottom.
Far beyond the borders of every known pack, inside a fortress carved into obsidian cliffs, the Dark Alpha stood before a massive map.
One of his warriors entered and bowed.
"My Alpha... the message has reached Silvercrest."
The man smiled faintly.
"Good."
"Now all we have to do... is wait for fate to push her the rest of the way."
