The mysterious letter stayed hidden inside Seraphina's desk.
She read it countless times over the following days.
"When your heart can bear no more, follow the northern stars."
The words refused to leave her mind.
Who had written them?
How had they found their way into a centuries-old book?
Most importantly... why had they been left for her?
She had no answers.
Only more questions.
Outside, Silvercrest prepared for another council gathering.
Kael had summoned every commander after reports of rogue activity continued to increase near the northern border.
The atmosphere throughout the palace had become tense.
Something was coming.
Everyone could feel it.
Inside the council chamber, Captain Rowan pointed toward a map spread across the table.
"Three villages reported strange sightings during the last two nights," he explained.
"None of the rogues attacked. They simply watched before disappearing into the forest."
"Scouts?" Elder Marcus asked.
"Perhaps."
Kael folded his arms.
"Increase patrols, but don't provoke them unless necessary."
"Yes, Alpha."
The meeting ended quickly.
As the elders left, Kael noticed Seraphina waiting outside the chamber.
"Can we walk for a while?" he asked.
She hesitated before nodding.
They wandered through the palace gardens in silence.
The autumn flowers had begun to fade, their colorful petals falling gently onto the stone paths.
"Do you remember this place?" Kael asked.
"Of course."
"This is where you beat me during our first training match."
A faint smile appeared on Seraphina's face.
"You let me win."
"I absolutely did not."
"You slipped on purpose."
"I'll deny that until my last breath."
For the first time in days, they both laughed.
The moment was brief.
But it reminded them of everything they had once shared.
Kael stopped walking.
"Seraphina... I miss us."
Her smile slowly disappeared.
"So do I."
"Then don't give up on me."
"I'm not the one walking away."
Kael looked down.
"I haven't touched Lyra since the festival."
"I know."
"I haven't written to her either."
"I know that too."
"Then why do you keep looking at me like you've already lost me?"
Seraphina took a slow breath.
"Because every morning I watch you fight your own instincts."
"One day... you'll get tired."
"Never."
"Kael."
She stepped closer.
"You can fight enemies.
You can fight wars.
But you can't fight your own soul forever."
Before Kael could answer, a sudden wave of pain struck him.
He staggered backward, grabbing his chest.
"Kael!"
Seraphina caught him before he collapsed.
His breathing became uneven.
"The bond..." he whispered.
"It's happening again."
"Lyra?"
He nodded weakly.
"She's in danger."
Miles away, a group of masked attackers surrounded Lyra's carriage on a lonely mountain road.
Moonvale warriors fought desperately against dozens of rogues emerging from the forest.
"Protect Lady Lyra!" one commander shouted.
Steel clashed beneath the darkening sky.
Inside Silvercrest Palace, Kael dropped to one knee.
The pain grew stronger with every passing second.
"She's being attacked," he gasped.
"I can feel it."
Seraphina's heart tightened.
She knew exactly what the bond meant.
Lyra's fear.
Her injuries.
Even her heartbeat...
Kael could feel all of it.
"Rowan!" Seraphina called.
The captain sprinted into the gardens.
"Prepare fifty riders immediately."
"We're leaving for Moonvale."
Kael looked up in surprise.
"You're coming?"
"She's our ally," Seraphina answered firmly.
"And if Moonvale falls today, countless innocent wolves will die."
Within minutes, Silvercrest's elite warriors rode north through the forest.
The journey was fast and silent.
Kael led from the front.
Seraphina rode beside him.
Neither spoke.
Both understood this mission would change something between them forever.
They reached the mountain pass just as the battle ended.
Rogue bodies covered the rocky trail.
Moonvale warriors tended to their wounded.
Kael immediately searched for Lyra.
He found her sitting against a broken carriage wheel.
Blood stained her sleeve.
The moment their eyes met, the invisible mate bond surged violently.
Kael froze.
Without thinking, he rushed toward her.
"Lyra!"
He knelt beside her, gently taking her injured hand.
"Are you hurt badly?"
"It's only a cut," she whispered.
"I'm fine."
Several steps away, Seraphina stood perfectly still.
She watched the concern in Kael's eyes.
The tenderness in his voice.
None of it was intentional.
None of it was forced.
It came naturally.
And that realization hurt more than anything else.
Evelyn quietly walked to Seraphina's side.
"Are you alright?" she asked softly.
Seraphina forced a small smile.
"Yes."
But deep inside...
For the very first time since the festival...
She truly began to wonder if letting Kael go might be the greatest act of love she could ever offer.
