The journey back to Silvercrest was painfully quiet.
The sound of horses galloping along the forest road was the only thing breaking the silence.
Kael rode several paces ahead of everyone else.
His thoughts remained with Lyra.
Seraphina noticed every distant glance he cast toward the Moonvale carriage before it disappeared onto another road.
She no longer blamed him.
That frightened her more than anger ever could.
When they returned to the palace, the servants rushed to welcome them.
"Alpha! Luna!"
"The council has been waiting for your return."
Kael nodded.
"Tell them we'll meet tomorrow morning."
"Yes, Alpha."
Without another word, he disappeared into his office.
Seraphina watched him go.
He hadn't even realized they hadn't spoken since the battle.
She quietly returned to her chambers.
The room that had once felt like home now seemed unfamiliar.
Every piece of furniture carried a memory.
The fireplace where they spent winter evenings.
The balcony where Kael first confessed he loved her.
The bed they had shared for seven years.
She slowly opened the wardrobe.
On the highest shelf rested a small wooden box.
Inside were dozens of tiny keepsakes.
A dried white rose Kael had picked for her during their first spring together.
A silver bracelet he had crafted himself after his first victory as Alpha.
Their wedding ribbons, carefully folded.
She held each item in trembling hands.
"When did we begin losing each other?" she whispered.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Come in."
Evelyn entered carrying a tray of tea.
"I thought you might need company."
Seraphina smiled gratefully.
"Thank you."
The two women sat quietly beside the window.
"You've made a decision, haven't you?" Evelyn suddenly asked.
Seraphina looked surprised.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Only to someone who knows you."
Several long moments passed before Seraphina finally nodded.
"I can't stay like this forever."
"Does Kael know?"
"No."
"Will you tell him?"
"Not until I'm certain."
Evelyn reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.
"Whatever you choose... I'll support you."
"Thank you."
That evening, Kael finally returned to their chambers.
He looked exhausted.
The moment he saw Seraphina packing several books into a leather bag, he froze.
"What are you doing?"
"Organizing a few things."
"Why?"
"Because I may need them."
"Need them where?"
She stopped folding her clothes.
"I don't know yet."
Kael's heartbeat quickened.
"You're leaving."
"I'm thinking."
"Seraphina..."
"Don't."
She closed the bag and faced him.
"Please don't make promises again."
"I'm not making promises."
"Then what are you doing?"
"Begging."
The single word caught her completely off guard.
"I'm begging you not to leave."
Seraphina had never seen Kael lower his pride before anyone.
Not even enemy Alphas.
Yet here he stood, looking completely helpless.
"Why?" she asked quietly.
"Because I love you."
"I know you do."
"Then stay."
Tears gathered in her eyes.
"Love isn't always enough anymore."
"We'll find a way."
"Will we?"
"Yes."
"Even if the Moon Goddess keeps pulling you toward Lyra?"
Kael couldn't answer.
His silence filled the room.
"That's what I thought," she whispered.
She picked up the leather bag and placed it back inside the wardrobe.
"I'm not leaving tonight."
"But one day... I might."
Kael closed his eyes.
For the first time since becoming Alpha, he truly understood fear.
Not fear of death.
Not fear of losing a battle.
But fear of waking up one morning and finding the woman he loved gone forever.
Late that night, unable to sleep, Seraphina walked into the palace gardens.
The full moon illuminated the ancient Moon Tree where Kael had first asked her to become his Luna.
She gently rested her hand against its trunk.
"Tell me..." she whispered to the silent night.
"If I leave... will I finally find peace?"
A cold wind swept through the branches.
Somewhere beyond the northern mountains, the black crescent pendant hanging around the Dark Alpha's neck suddenly began to glow.
He slowly looked toward the north.
"She's beginning to let go," he murmured.
One of his commanders stepped forward.
"Should we move now, my Alpha?"
He shook his head.
"Not yet."
"A wounded heart still clings to hope."
"When hope dies... she'll choose her own path."
He smiled faintly beneath the moonlight.
"And that path will lead her straight to the Shadowlands."
