Steel clashed against steel as chaos erupted across the forest road.
Kael's assassins attacked from every direction, using the trees as cover.
Black arrows rained through the air.
"Protect Evelyn!" Thaddeus commanded.
Dark flames burst from his sword as he intercepted the first wave of attackers.
Three assassins fell before they even reached him.
Ryland's massive wolf form tore through the enemy ranks, forcing several soldiers to retreat.
Orion moved faster than the human eye could follow.
One moment he stood beside Evelyn.
The next, he appeared behind an enemy captain.
The vampire's blade flashed.
The captain collapsed instantly.
"Left flank!" Cedric shouted.
The royal guards formed a defensive circle around Evelyn.
Meanwhile, Aurora fought like a warrior born for battle.
Her twin golden blades spun gracefully through the air.
Every strike carried golden light that burned the enemy's dark magic.
"She's incredible," Marcus whispered.
"Now I understand why she was chosen as a Guardian."
Suddenly, a masked assassin leaped from the trees directly toward Evelyn.
"Die, Ashbourne!"
Evelyn instinctively raised her hand.
Silver light exploded from her palm.
The assassin was blasted backward, crashing into a tree.
"Good," Aurora called while continuing to fight.
"Trust your instincts!"
"Don't think—feel the magic!"
More assassins surrounded Evelyn.
This time she didn't panic.
Closing her eyes briefly, she remembered the warmth she had felt when the Heart of Ashbourne awakened.
Instead of resisting the magic...
She embraced it.
Silver energy flowed naturally through her body.
Glowing symbols appeared beneath her feet.
"Shield of Dawn," Aurora whispered with amazement.
A circular barrier of white light expanded around Evelyn.
Every arrow striking it dissolved into harmless sparks.
"She's learning faster than expected," Orion observed.
Far away, hidden behind thick trees, the Shadow Prophet watched silently.
"Interesting..." he murmured.
"The Heart has accepted her completely."
"Perhaps she really can awaken the Crown."
He disappeared into the shadows before anyone sensed his presence.
After several intense minutes, the remaining assassins began retreating.
"Fall back!" one of them shouted.
"Mission failed!"
Within moments, the forest became quiet again.
Ryland shifted back into human form.
"Cowards," he muttered.
Aurora cleaned her blades before returning them to their sheaths.
"That wasn't their real objective."
"Then what was?" Evelyn asked.
"To measure our strength."
"Kael never sends his best warriors first."
Thaddeus frowned.
"Just like Hollow Peak."
"Every battle has been a test."
"Exactly," Aurora replied.
"He's preparing for something much larger."
As night approached, the group made camp beside a small river.
The mood remained tense despite the temporary peace.
While the others rested, Aurora approached Evelyn.
"Walk with me."
The two women moved a short distance away from the campfire.
"You still doubt yourself," Aurora said.
Evelyn looked down.
"I've spent my whole life believing I was ordinary."
"Now everyone expects me to become a queen and save the world."
"That's terrifying."
Aurora smiled gently.
"Every great ruler feels fear."
"The difference is whether they let fear control them."
"How did you become a Guardian?" Evelyn asked.
"I failed my first trial."
Evelyn blinked.
"You failed?"
"Twice," Aurora admitted with a laugh.
"Strength alone never earns the blessing of the relics."
"They choose people willing to sacrifice for others."
"That's why they'll accept you."
"Because your heart remains pure despite everything you've lost."
Those words gave Evelyn new confidence.
The next morning, the group resumed their journey.
By sunset they reached the edge of the Solarian Desert.
Golden dunes stretched endlessly toward the horizon.
In the distance, towering white pillars rose from the sand.
"The Sun Temple," Cedric said.
"We're finally here."
As they approached, Evelyn noticed something unusual.
The enormous temple gates already stood open.
"That's strange," Orion muttered.
"According to legend, the gates only open for the rightful heir."
Aurora slowly reached for her swords.
"Someone opened them before us."
Thaddeus's expression hardened.
"Kael."
The group hurried toward the entrance.
Inside the temple, dozens of ancient statues had been destroyed.
The marble floor was stained with fresh blood.
"We weren't the first visitors," Ryland growled.
Deep within the temple, a slow clap echoed through the halls.
"Congratulations," Kael's voice said calmly.
"You made excellent time."
He stepped from the shadows with a confident smile.
Beside him floated a brilliant golden crown.
"Unfortunately..."
"You're too late."
