The world Micaela Whitlock had been born into was not the one her parents used to describe before whispering became dangerous. They spoke of cities filled with lights instead of watchtowers, of schools instead of slave barracks, and of freedom instead of chains. Those stories had faded over the years, replaced by harsh reality. For nearly a century, the werewolves—known as the shape-shifters—had ruled every kingdom. Humans no longer owned land, made laws, or dreamed beyond survival. They served. They obeyed. They endured. Micaela had accepted that truth long ago. She had learned that hope was a dangerous luxury for someone born into captivity.
The palace bells echoed through the eastern servants' quarters before sunrise. Like every morning, Micaela climbed from her narrow cot before the second bell rang. Anyone still in bed after the third bell would receive ten lashes regardless of the excuse. She quickly folded her thin blanket, tied back her long chestnut hair, and slipped into the plain gray dress assigned to every human servant. Around her neck rested a simple iron collar engraved with the royal crest—a constant reminder that she belonged to the Crown. She touched it for only a moment before lowering her hand. Dwelling on such things only made the burden heavier.
Outside, hundreds of servants hurried across the stone courtyard with lowered heads. No one spoke unless spoken to. The palace guards, towering werewolves dressed in black armor trimmed with silver, watched every movement with unnerving attention. Their golden eyes missed nothing. Micaela kept her gaze fixed on the ground as she joined the line heading toward the kitchens. Her father had once told her that invisible people survived the longest. Since his death, she had lived by those words every single day.
The royal kitchens were already alive with activity. Giant ovens burned with roaring flames while cooks barked orders from every direction. Fresh bread filled the air with warmth, yet the comforting scent couldn't erase the fear that lingered within the room. Human servants prepared food, polished silverware, scrubbed floors, and carried heavy trays while werewolf overseers inspected every task. One mistake was enough to earn punishment. Micaela quietly took her place beside the washing station and began cleaning stacks of expensive porcelain dishes, moving with practiced precision.
"Morning, Micaela," whispered a familiar voice beside her. It was Clara, another human maid only a year older than her. Despite the risks, Clara always found a way to smile. "Did you hear the news?" she asked softly while pretending to organize clean plates.
"No," Micaela replied without looking up. "And you shouldn't be talking."
"The royal family is returning today," Clara murmured anyway. "Every servant in the palace has been preparing since yesterday. They say the Alpha King himself is coming back after inspecting the northern territories."
Micaela's hands paused for only a heartbeat before continuing their work. She had heard countless stories about the Alpha King. Some called him a ruthless conqueror. Others claimed he possessed powers unlike any werewolf alive. The older servants refused to speak his name aloud, believing it invited misfortune. She had never seen him herself, and she intended to keep it that way.
"Keep your head down," she reminded Clara gently. "Kings don't notice people like us."
"Let's hope you're right," Clara answered.
Hours passed beneath endless orders and exhausting labor. By midday, Micaela carried fresh linens toward the western corridor where only trusted servants were permitted. The palace itself was breathtaking despite the suffering it concealed. Marble floors reflected crystal chandeliers hanging from vaulted ceilings. Massive paintings of past rulers lined the walls, each one depicting victorious werewolves standing over defeated enemies. Beautiful gardens stretched beyond tall windows, their colorful flowers masking the cruelty hidden within the kingdom's walls.
As she rounded a corner, voices drifted from a nearby hallway. Instinctively, Micaela stepped behind one of the towering marble pillars. Two palace guards stood speaking in low voices.
"The Alpha King refused every marriage proposal again," one guard muttered.
"The nobles won't be pleased," the other replied. "The council insists he must choose a queen soon."
"Have you ever seen him care about what the council wants?"
Both guards laughed quietly before walking away.
Only after their footsteps disappeared did Micaela continue walking. She wasn't interested in royal politics. Kings, queens, noble families—it meant little to someone whose greatest concern was making it through another day alive. Still, something about their conversation lingered in her thoughts.
Later that afternoon, she finished polishing the final set of silver trays and prepared to return to the servants' quarters. Before she reached the exit, the head housekeeper's sharp voice echoed across the room.
"Micaela Whitlock!"
Every servant immediately stopped working.
Heart pounding, Micaela hurried forward before lowering into a respectful bow.
"Yes, Madam Helena?"
The elderly woman adjusted the spectacles resting on the bridge of her nose while studying a parchment in her hand.
"Beginning tomorrow, your duties are changing."
Confusion flickered across Micaela's face. "Changing?"
"His Majesty's private household requires additional attendants. You've been selected."
The words struck harder than any physical blow.
"There... there must be some mistake," Micaela whispered before she could stop herself.
Madam Helena's cold eyes narrowed instantly.
"Are you questioning a royal assignment?"
"No, Madam. Forgive me."
"Good. Report to the King's Wing before sunrise tomorrow. You will answer directly to the Royal Chamberlain. From that moment onward, your responsibilities belong exclusively to His Majesty's residence."
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Micaela barely heard the rest of the instructions. Stories flooded her mind—stories of servants disappearing after being transferred to the King's Wing, of impossible expectations, of punishments no one dared describe aloud. Whether they were true or not hardly mattered. Everyone feared serving too close to the throne.
That evening, she climbed the narrow staircase leading to the servants' dormitory more slowly than usual. Clara was waiting beside her bed.
"You look pale," Clara said with concern. "What happened?"
Micaela forced a weak smile that failed to reach her eyes.
"I've been transferred."
"Where?"
"The King's Wing."
The color drained from Clara's face.
"No..."
"It starts tomorrow morning."
Neither woman spoke again.
Silence settled between them like a heavy blanket, broken only by the distant howl of wolves echoing through the night beyond the palace walls. Micaela lay awake staring at the wooden ceiling above her bed. For years she had managed to remain unnoticed, surviving by blending into the endless crowd of servants.
Tomorrow, that would change.
And deep within the heart of the palace, where only the most powerful wolves walked, fate had already begun moving toward her with unstoppable determination.
