Long before dawn, the palace bells echoed through the servants' quarters once again. Micaela barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, whispers about the Alpha King returned to haunt her thoughts. Some servants claimed he had ripped apart traitors with his bare hands. Others swore his wolf could smell lies from across an entire room. Whether the stories were true no longer mattered. Before sunrise, she would be standing inside his residence.

She folded her blanket neatly before slipping into a freshly pressed gray maid's uniform. Unlike the ordinary servants' dress, this one carried the royal crest embroidered in silver thread near the collar. It was beautiful, yet strangely intimidating. Only servants assigned to the King's Wing were permitted to wear it.

"Good luck," Clara whispered from the neighboring bed.

Micaela offered a nervous smile. "I'll be back tonight."

Clara didn't answer. They both knew there was no guarantee of that.

Outside, the eastern sky glowed faintly as she crossed the enormous palace courtyard. Guards stood like statues beside every gate, their sharp golden eyes following every servant who passed. The closer Micaela moved toward the royal residence, the quieter everything became. Even the birds seemed reluctant to sing near the King's Wing.

The palace itself transformed as she entered the restricted section. Marble floors gave way to polished black stone that reflected the chandeliers hanging overhead. Towering pillars carved with wolves surrounded wide hallways decorated with crimson banners bearing the royal crest. Every piece of furniture looked priceless, every painting depicted ancient Alpha Kings who ruled before the world fell to the werewolves.

Waiting near the entrance stood a tall elderly werewolf dressed in an immaculate black suit.

"You are Micaela Whitlock?"

"Yes, sir," she answered immediately, lowering her head.

"I am Chamberlain Aldric. From today onward, you answer directly to me."

His calm voice carried authority without needing to be raised.

"There are rules you will follow without exception," he continued. "You will never speak unless spoken to. You will never make direct eye contact with His Majesty unless ordered. You will remain invisible unless your duties require otherwise. Most importantly... you will never enter the King's private chambers without permission."

"Yes, sir."

"Failure to obey these rules will not be tolerated."

He turned sharply, expecting her to follow.

As they walked through endless corridors, Micaela couldn't help noticing the silence. Unlike the bustling servant halls she had always known, only a handful of attendants worked here. Each moved with perfect discipline, barely making a sound.

"His Majesty values efficiency," Aldric explained without looking back. "Disorder irritates him."

"Has... His Majesty already returned?" she asked cautiously.

"His carriage arrived shortly before midnight."

A strange knot formed inside her stomach.

So he was here.

Somewhere inside this enormous palace.

Closer than she had ever imagined.

They entered a magnificent library where floor-to-ceiling shelves stretched toward an intricately painted ceiling. Sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows, bathing the room in shades of gold and crimson.

"Dust every shelf," Aldric instructed. "Once finished, report to Lady Eleanor in the eastern hallway. She oversees the remaining household staff."

"Yes, sir."

Left alone, Micaela released a slow breath.

The library was breathtaking.

Ancient books bound in leather filled hundreds of shelves. Massive fireplaces warmed the room despite the cool morning air. She carefully climbed a ladder to reach the highest shelves, dusting each volume with gentle precision.

Hours passed peacefully.

For the first time since arriving, she allowed herself to believe perhaps the King's Wing wasn't as terrifying as everyone claimed.

That hope disappeared the moment hurried footsteps echoed outside.

"His Majesty is coming!" someone whispered urgently.

Every servant instantly froze.

Several maids lowered their heads so quickly they nearly dropped what they carried.

Micaela climbed down from the ladder, confused by the sudden panic.

Then she heard them.

Heavy footsteps.

Measured.

Confident.

Powerful.

Each step echoed through the corridor like distant thunder.

The atmosphere itself seemed to change.

A strange pressure filled the air, making it difficult to breathe.

Without thinking, Micaela lowered her gaze exactly as she had been instructed.

She couldn't see him.

Only polished black boots crossing the marble floor.

Several guards followed behind.

No one dared move.

No one dared speak.

The footsteps slowed.

Stopped.

Silence.

Micaela's heartbeat pounded inside her ears.

"Who is she?"

The deep masculine voice sent a chill racing down her spine.

It was calm.

Controlled.

Yet carried an authority unlike anything she had ever heard.

"A new servant, Your Majesty," Aldric answered respectfully.

"Lift your head."

The command wasn't directed at anyone else.

It was directed at her.

Her hands trembled.

Every instinct screamed at her to keep looking down.

Slowly, she obeyed.

Her emerald eyes rose until they met the man standing only a few feet away.

Time seemed to stop.

The Alpha King stood impossibly tall, dressed in a perfectly tailored black military coat embroidered with silver wolves. His raven-black hair brushed against his shoulders while piercing sapphire-blue eyes studied her with unsettling intensity. There was nothing cruel in his expression.

Nothing kind either.

Only quiet curiosity.

For a brief moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Something strange flickered across his face.

Almost as if he had recognized her.

His jaw tightened.

His breathing slowed.

Then, just as quickly, the expression vanished.

"Continue your work," he said calmly.

"Yes... Your Majesty," Micaela whispered.

He turned away, disappearing down the corridor with his guards following behind.

Only after he was gone did everyone breathe again.

One maid nearly collapsed against the wall.

"Did you see that?" another whispered.

"His Majesty never stops for servants."

"Not once."

Micaela remained frozen beside the bookshelf.

She couldn't explain what had happened.

The King's gaze hadn't been angry.

Nor dismissive.

It had felt...

Searching.

As though he had been looking for something.

Far away, inside another corridor, the Alpha King continued walking beside Chamberlain Aldric.

"The new maid," he said quietly.

"Yes, Your Majesty?"

"What is her name?"

"Micaela Whitlock."

The King repeated the name silently to himself.

Something about it refused to leave his mind.

Something about her scent...

Felt impossibly familiar.

And for the first time in years, a question lingered inside the mind of the most feared ruler in the world.

Who... was Micaela Whitlock?

You finished
