The rest of the morning passed in silence, yet Micaela couldn't concentrate on her work. Every time she reached for another book or polished another piece of furniture, the image of the Alpha King lingered in her mind. His piercing blue eyes hadn't looked at her the way the other werewolves looked at humans. There had been no disgust or amusement. Instead, there had been something she couldn't explain. Curiosity. It unsettled her far more than hatred ever could.
Lady Eleanor found her shortly before noon arranging fresh flowers in one of the royal hallways.
"The vases are crooked," the older woman said sharply.
Micaela immediately adjusted them.
"Forgive me."
"His Majesty notices everything. A crooked vase. Dust on a window. A wrinkled tablecloth. He expects perfection, and so do I."
"Yes, my lady."
"Good. Now accompany me. You'll help prepare the King's study before tonight's council meeting."
Micaela swallowed nervously before following behind.
The royal study was unlike any room she had ever entered. Massive bookshelves covered every wall while maps of kingdoms stretched across a polished oak table in the center. Weapons decorated one side of the chamber—ancient swords, battle axes, and beautifully crafted bows, each carrying symbols of victories long before Micaela had been born.
"Dust carefully," Lady Eleanor instructed. "Nothing in this room is replaceable."
"Understood."
Working carefully, Micaela cleaned each surface with steady hands. The room smelled faintly of cedarwood and something else... a rich earthy scent she couldn't identify.
She was wiping the carved edge of the large desk when she noticed an old leather-bound journal lying slightly open.
Curiosity tugged at her.
Before she could stop herself, her eyes drifted toward a hand-drawn map inside.
"Do not touch that."
The voice came from behind.
Micaela jumped so violently that the cloth slipped from her hand.
"Forgive me!" she gasped, turning around.
Standing in the doorway was the Alpha King.
He had entered so quietly she hadn't heard a single footstep.
Lady Eleanor immediately lowered herself into a respectful bow.
"Your Majesty."
Micaela quickly followed, her heartbeat racing.
"Leave us," the King ordered calmly.
Lady Eleanor hesitated for only a second.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
The door closed behind her.
Silence filled the room.
Micaela remained frozen with her head lowered.
"Look at me."
Her breath caught.
Slowly, she obeyed.
The Alpha King stood only a few feet away. Up close, his presence was even more overwhelming. He carried himself with effortless confidence, every movement controlled and deliberate. There wasn't a single unnecessary motion in the way he walked.
"You are frightened," he observed.
"I... I only wish to perform my duties well, Your Majesty."
A faint smile touched the corner of his lips.
"That wasn't an answer."
She lowered her eyes again.
"Humans are taught to fear wolves."
"And should they?"
She remained silent.
Answering honestly could cost her life.
"Speak freely," he said.
"With respect, Your Majesty... fear keeps humans alive."
Instead of anger, amusement flickered across his expression.
"An honest answer."
He walked around the desk, studying her quietly.
"How long have you served inside the palace?"
"Since I was twelve."
"Your parents?"
"Both passed away several years ago."
His expression softened for the briefest moment.
"I'm sorry."
The words stunned her.
She hadn't expected sympathy from the most feared ruler in existence.
"Thank you... Your Majesty."
Again, silence settled between them.
Then something unexpected happened.
The King frowned slightly before taking one slow step closer.
His nostrils flared almost imperceptibly.
It looked as though he were... smelling the air.
Micaela instinctively stepped backward.
"Forgive me if I've offended you."
"You haven't."
His voice had grown quieter.
More thoughtful.
"Strange..." he murmured almost to himself.
"Your Majesty?"
Before he could answer, hurried footsteps echoed outside.
The study door opened.
"Your Majesty," Chamberlain Aldric said respectfully, "the council has assembled earlier than expected."
The King looked away from Micaela, though not before one final lingering glance.
"Very well."
He started toward the door before pausing.
"You may continue your work."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Moments later, he disappeared into the corridor.
Micaela released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Why had he questioned her?
Why had he apologized for her parents?
Nothing about that conversation matched the terrifying stories she'd grown up hearing.
Elsewhere in the palace...
Inside the council chamber, nobles gathered around a circular table as the Alpha King took his seat.
"The eastern borders remain secure," one Alpha reported.
"Trade routes have improved," said another.
Yet the King barely listened.
His thoughts remained elsewhere.
Her scent.
It refused to leave him.
Unlike any human he had encountered.
Warm.
Sweet.
Strangely familiar.
His wolf stirred uneasily beneath the surface.
"Mine..."
The faint growl echoed only inside his mind.
The King stiffened.
For years his wolf had remained silent regarding every noblewoman presented as a potential Luna.
Now it reacted to a human servant?
Impossible.
"Your Majesty?" one council member asked.
Realizing everyone was staring at him, the King composed himself.
"Continue."
Hours later, as evening settled over the palace, Micaela returned to the servants' quarters exhausted.
Clara immediately noticed her troubled expression.
"How was your first day?"
Micaela sat heavily on her bed.
"Different."
"Did you see him?"
She nodded slowly.
"Twice."
Clara's eyes widened.
"Twice?"
"He spoke to me."
"What?"
"I don't understand it either."
Clara grabbed her arm.
"Listen to me carefully. Stay away from him if you can. Kings don't notice servants unless something is wrong."
Micaela wanted to believe that.
She truly did.
But deep inside...
She couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
And far above the servants' quarters, standing alone on the balcony outside his chambers, the Alpha King stared into the moonlit gardens.
"Micaela Whitlock..." he whispered.
His wolf answered with another possessive growl.
"Find her."
For the first time in decades...
The King felt fate beginning to move.
