The palace had never felt so suffocating. Every corridor Micaela walked through carried the weight of unseen eyes, every whispered conversation stopped the moment she approached. She told herself it was only her imagination. After all, she was merely another human servant among hundreds. Yet the memory of the Alpha King's piercing gaze refused to leave her mind. It haunted every thought, making even the simplest task feel unusually difficult.
The following morning began with another inspection inside the King's Wing. Lady Eleanor walked between the servants with folded arms, her sharp eyes examining every detail. Beds had to be perfectly made, uniforms spotless, and every corridor polished until it reflected the chandeliers above. Micaela worked silently beside the other maids, determined not to draw attention to herself again.
"Faster," Lady Eleanor ordered. "His Majesty dislikes delays."
"Yes, my lady," the servants answered in unison.
As Micaela polished the marble staircase leading toward the royal library, two guards passed by speaking quietly.
"The northern Alphas arrived before dawn," one of them said.
"Then today's meeting won't be pleasant," the other replied.
"It never is when the King is involved."
The guards disappeared around the corner, leaving Micaela wondering what kind of ruler inspired so much caution even among his own warriors.
By midmorning, Chamberlain Aldric approached with a list in his hands.
"Micaela."
She immediately stopped working.
"Yes, sir?"
"His Majesty's chambers require fresh flowers. You'll replace yesterday's arrangements before the council meeting begins."
Her heart skipped a beat.
"His... chambers?"
"Is there a problem?"
"No, sir."
"Good. Follow me."
Every step toward the royal quarters felt heavier than the last. The King's residence occupied the highest level of the palace, where only trusted guards and selected servants were permitted. Massive carved doors lined the hallway, each guarded by warriors dressed in black armor bearing the royal crest.
Aldric stopped before the largest doors Micaela had ever seen.
"His Majesty is currently in the training grounds," he explained. "You have fifteen minutes. Replace the flowers, straighten the room if necessary, and leave immediately. Touch nothing else."
"Understood."
The heavy doors opened with remarkable silence.
Micaela stepped inside.
The room was unlike anything she had imagined.
Instead of extravagant luxury, it reflected quiet discipline. Shelves filled with ancient books covered one wall while maps and battle plans occupied another. A fireplace burned steadily despite the pleasant weather outside. Large windows overlooked the palace gardens, allowing warm sunlight to spill across polished wooden floors.
Only one thing softened the room.
Fresh white lilies rested inside a crystal vase near the balcony.
She smiled faintly.
Even the feared Alpha King appreciated flowers.
Quickly replacing the arrangements, she carefully dusted nearby shelves before turning to leave.
Then she noticed something.
A large portrait hanging beside the fireplace.
It depicted a much younger Alpha King standing beside an older man wearing the royal crown.
His father.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
The voice came from behind her.
Micaela gasped.
She hadn't heard the door open.
The Alpha King stood there, dressed in simple black training clothes instead of royal attire. Sweat glistened across his forehead, and a wooden practice sword rested against one shoulder.
"Your Majesty," she stammered, immediately lowering her head.
"Relax," he said calmly.
She couldn't.
Not when he was only a few steps away.
"I was just replacing the flowers."
"I know."
Silence stretched between them.
He walked toward the portrait, his eyes lingering on it.
"That was taken shortly before my father died."
Micaela looked up before quickly lowering her gaze again.
"I'm sorry for your loss."
He studied her carefully.
"You apologize often."
"Humans usually have reason to."
A faint smile crossed his face.
"You speak honestly."
"Only when asked, Your Majesty."
"Good."
He stepped closer.
Far closer than before.
Again, he inhaled slowly.
His eyes darkened.
"That scent..." he murmured.
Micaela frowned.
"Your Majesty?"
For a split second, an unfamiliar golden glow flashed through his sapphire eyes before disappearing.
His jaw tightened.
Inside his mind, his wolf stirred violently.
"Mate..."
The possessive growl echoed through his thoughts.
"Impossible," he answered silently.
"She is ours."
His wolf had never spoken with such certainty.
Never.
Not once in decades.
Before he could respond, hurried footsteps echoed outside.
The chamber doors opened.
"Your Majesty," Aldric announced. "Princess Anastasia has arrived ahead of schedule."
The King's expression immediately hardened.
"Tell her I'll join her shortly."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
The doors closed once more.
Micaela remained frozen.
She had heard of Princess Anastasia.
Daughter of the Eastern Alpha.
Future Queen.
The King's betrothed.
"You should go," he said quietly.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
She curtsied before hurrying toward the exit.
Just before reaching the door, his voice stopped her.
"Micaela."
She turned.
"Yes?"
"The lilies suit the room better than the roses."
She blinked in surprise.
"Thank you... Your Majesty."
As the doors closed behind her, she released a shaky breath.
Meanwhile...
Inside the chamber, the Alpha King stood perfectly still.
"Mate," his wolf growled again.
"She is human."
"Doesn't matter."
"The council will never accept it."
"I don't care."
He closed his eyes.
Everything he believed about fate suddenly felt uncertain.
Moments later, Princess Anastasia swept into the royal sitting room wearing an elegant emerald gown.
"You've kept me waiting," she said with a charming smile.
"I was occupied."
She stepped closer, attempting to link her arm through his.
He subtly moved away.
The rejection didn't go unnoticed.
"Is something troubling you?" she asked.
"No."
"You've been distant ever since returning from the northern territories."
"I've simply been busy."
Anastasia studied him carefully.
She knew him well enough to recognize when he was hiding something.
"Very well," she replied with a polite smile.
But deep inside...
Suspicion had already begun to grow.
Later that evening, Micaela sat quietly beside Clara in the servants' dining hall.
"You look distracted," Clara whispered.
"I entered the King's chambers today."
Clara nearly dropped her spoon.
"You what?"
"He was there."
"Did he punish you?"
"No."
"Then what happened?"
Micaela hesitated.
"He... spoke to me."
"Again?"
"Yes."
Clara stared at her in disbelief.
"That's not normal."
Micaela knew it wasn't.
Far above them, standing alone beneath the moonlight, the Alpha King looked toward the servants' quarters.
"Micaela Whitlock..."
For the first time in his life...
His wolf had chosen.
And no force in the world—not tradition, not the council, not even his arranged engagement—could silence the bond that had finally awakened.
