The following morning, the palace buzzed with unusual energy. Noble families from neighboring territories had begun arriving for the Royal Summit, an annual gathering where Alphas discussed alliances, borders, trade, and matters concerning the kingdom. Servants hurried through every corridor carrying expensive decorations, silver platters, and crates of imported wine. Micaela had never seen the palace so alive, yet beneath the elegance lingered an undeniable tension. Everyone knew that when powerful Alphas gathered, tempers were never far behind.
Lady Eleanor wasted no time assigning duties. 'The western ballroom must be spotless before noon,' she instructed. 'His Majesty will host the welcoming banquet tonight. Every candle, every glass, every chair must be perfect.'
Micaela immediately joined the other maids, polishing crystal goblets until they sparkled beneath the chandeliers. She kept her focus entirely on her work, hoping today would pass without another unexpected encounter with the King.
Unfortunately, fate seemed to have different plans.
As she carried fresh linens toward the grand staircase, two noblewomen walked past discussing the royal engagement.
'Princess Anastasia will make a magnificent Queen,' one woman commented proudly.
'If His Majesty ever decides to marry her,' the other replied with a quiet laugh.
'The ceremony has already been delayed twice.'
'Perhaps the King enjoys making the council nervous.'
The women disappeared around the corner, leaving Micaela standing still for a brief moment. She quickly reminded herself that such matters had nothing to do with servants. Yet she couldn't explain the strange heaviness that settled inside her chest.
Inside the Royal Council Chamber, the Alpha King listened patiently as various Alphas debated military patrols and territorial disputes. Although his expression remained calm, his attention drifted repeatedly toward the palace grounds below.
'Your Majesty?' Alpha Darius questioned. 'Do you disagree with the proposal?'
The King looked back toward the council table.
'No. Continue.'
Several council members exchanged subtle glances.
It was unlike their King to lose focus.
Even more unsettling was the restless behavior of his wolf.
'Find her,' it growled.
'Enough,' the King answered silently.
'She is close.'
'I know.'
'Bring her to us.'
The King clenched his jaw.
He had spent the entire night convincing himself that his wolf was mistaken.
Humans could not become mates to Alpha Kings.
It had never happened.
It should never happen.
Yet every instinct inside him argued otherwise.
Meanwhile, Micaela finished arranging flowers inside the ballroom before hurrying toward the kitchens. Halfway through the corridor, she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
'Micaela!'
She turned to find Clara rushing toward her.
'Thank goodness I found you.'
'What's wrong?'
'Lady Eleanor is looking everywhere for you. Princess Anastasia requested additional attendants for her private chambers.'
Micaela's heart sank.
'Me?'
'Apparently.'
The two women quickly made their way toward the guest wing where servants moved in and out carrying expensive gowns, jewelry boxes, and perfumes.
Princess Anastasia stood before an enormous mirror while two maids adjusted the train of her emerald gown. She was breathtakingly beautiful—tall, graceful, with long golden hair cascading over her shoulders. Everything about her reflected noble elegance.
The moment her emerald eyes landed on Micaela, a faint smile appeared.
'You're the new maid everyone keeps talking about.'
Micaela lowered her head immediately.
'Your Highness.'
'Come closer.'
She obeyed cautiously.
'What's your name?'
'Micaela Whitlock.'
'Human?'
'Yes, Your Highness.'
Anastasia slowly circled her, studying her as though inspecting an object.
'Interesting.'
'Your Highness?'
'Nothing.'
She smiled sweetly.
'Brush my hair.'
Relieved that the request was simple enough, Micaela carefully began brushing the Princess's long blonde hair.
The room remained silent for several minutes.
Then Anastasia spoke.
'His Majesty has mentioned you.'
The brush froze in Micaela's hand.
'I... don't understand.'
'Neither do I.'
The Princess's smile never faded.
'He asked Chamberlain Aldric about you yesterday.'
A chill ran through Micaela.
'I'm sure there has been some misunderstanding.'
'Perhaps.'
Anastasia's voice remained calm.
'Or perhaps not.'
Before Micaela could answer, a servant entered hurriedly.
'Your Highness, the welcoming banquet is about to begin.'
'Perfect timing.'
Anastasia rose elegantly.
'You may leave.'
'Thank you, Your Highness.'
Micaela hurried from the room, unaware that the Princess continued watching her long after she disappeared.
'Find out everything about that girl,' Anastasia quietly instructed one of her personal guards.
'Yes, Your Highness.'
That evening, the palace ballroom glittered beneath hundreds of crystal chandeliers. Nobles filled the enormous hall while musicians played elegant melodies from the upper balcony. Human servants moved silently between tables serving wine and elaborate meals.
Micaela carried a silver tray through the crowd, carefully avoiding eye contact with anyone.
Then she felt it.
A gaze.
Watching her.
Looking up instinctively, she found the Alpha King seated upon the elevated royal platform.
His sapphire eyes locked onto hers from across the ballroom.
The entire world seemed to disappear.
His wolf stirred violently.
'Mate.'
Micaela quickly lowered her eyes and continued walking.
Yet she could still feel him watching.
Across the hall, Princess Anastasia noticed everything.
Her smile faltered for the briefest moment.
She followed the King's line of sight.
It landed directly on one person.
The human maid.
'Interesting...' she whispered softly.
As the banquet continued, Chamberlain Aldric approached the King's chair.
'Your Majesty, shall I announce the opening speech?'
The King didn't answer immediately.
His eyes never left Micaela.
'Your Majesty?'
'Yes... proceed.'
Even Aldric noticed the distraction.
Something had changed.
Something significant.
Much later that night, after the banquet ended, Micaela finally returned to the servants' quarters completely exhausted.
'How was serving the nobles?' Clara asked.
'I'd rather scrub floors for a month,' Micaela admitted.
Both women laughed quietly.
It was one of the few peaceful moments she had experienced all day.
But high above the palace, inside the King's private chambers, peace was impossible.
The Alpha King stood before the open balcony, staring toward the servants' wing.
'You're fighting it,' his wolf growled.
'I have no choice.'
'She belongs beside us.'
'She is human.'
'She is our mate.'
The King closed his eyes.
For decades he had ruled kingdoms without hesitation.
Now...
One quiet human maid had become the only battle he wasn't certain he could win.
And somewhere else within the palace, Princess Anastasia smiled coldly as the investigation into Micaela Whitlock officially began.
