Shantelle stared at her ringing phone.
The caller ID displayed a familiar name.
"Professor William Carter."
Her heartbeat quickened.
She hadn't spoken to her former mentor in nearly two years.
Taking a deep breath, she answered the call.
"Professor Carter?"
"Shantelle!"
The elderly man's warm voice immediately filled the room.
"I've been trying to reach you for months."
"How have you been?"
Shantelle forced a smile despite the tears in her eyes.
"I'm... alright."
"No, you're not," Professor Carter replied gently.
"I can hear it in your voice."
She remained silent.
"I heard about your marriage," he continued.
"I also heard you've stopped pursuing medicine."
"That disappointed me."
"You were one of the most gifted students I've ever taught."
His words reopened an old wound.
Medicine had once been her greatest dream.
She had spent countless sleepless nights studying anatomy, chemistry, and surgery.
Her professors believed she would become one of the country's best surgeons.
Then she married Evan.
Without hesitation, she abandoned everything.
Professor Carter sighed.
"The International Medical Institute still remembers you."
"Your scholarship remains valid."
"The dean personally asked me to invite you back."
"Classes begin in three weeks."
Shantelle tightened her grip on the phone.
"After everything... they still want me?"
"Of course."
"Talent doesn't disappear simply because someone chooses love over ambition."
"But don't waste that talent forever."
"Think carefully."
"You were born to save lives."
The call ended.
Shantelle remained standing in the living room.
For years, she had believed becoming Mrs. Thompson was her greatest achievement.
Now she wondered if she had mistaken love for purpose.
Her gaze slowly shifted toward the divorce agreement.
The pen still rested beside it.
Yesterday she couldn't imagine signing it.
Today...
The pain remained unbearable.
But another feeling had begun growing inside her.
Acceptance.
She gently picked up the pen.
"Evan..." she whispered.
"I loved you with everything I had."
"Maybe that's why I forgot how to love myself."
With trembling fingers, she signed her name.
Shantelle Scott.
The ink dried within seconds.
Yet those few letters marked the end of nearly a decade of one-sided love.
She quietly folded the papers and placed them back inside the envelope.
Then she walked upstairs.
Their bedroom suddenly felt unfamiliar.
She opened the wardrobe.
One side belonged entirely to Evan.
The other contained only a handful of dresses.
She realized something that made her smile bitterly.
In two years of marriage...
She had filled every corner of the house with Evan.
But there was almost nothing inside that reflected herself.
No medical books.
No graduation photos.
No research journals.
She had erased her own identity piece by piece.
One suitcase was enough to pack everything she owned.
After changing into comfortable clothes, she carefully removed her wedding ring.
She stared at it for several long moments.
This ring had once been her greatest treasure.
She had kissed it whenever Evan stayed away on business trips.
She believed it connected their hearts.
Now it felt surprisingly heavy.
She placed it inside a velvet jewelry box before closing the lid.
"Goodbye," she whispered.
Later that afternoon, she personally drove to Thompson Group headquarters.
Employees respectfully greeted her as Mrs. Thompson.
None of them knew she had already signed the divorce papers.
Her heels echoed through the executive floor.
She stopped outside Evan's office.
His secretary, Lisa, looked surprised.
"Mrs. Thompson? The CEO isn't here."
"I know," Shantelle replied calmly.
"Please give this envelope to him when he returns."
Lisa accepted it without question.
"Of course."
Shantelle gave one last glance toward Evan's office.
Behind those doors, she had once dreamed of building a future beside him.
Now...
She simply turned around and walked away.
At the same time, across the city, Evan sat inside Nicole's luxury apartment.
Nicole poured him a cup of coffee before sitting beside him.
"Did she finally agree?" she asked softly.
Evan nodded.
"She has one week."
"Good," Nicole smiled.
"Then everything will finally return to normal."
Evan looked out the window.
For some strange reason...
Instead of relief...
He felt uneasy.
A strange emptiness settled inside his chest.
"What's wrong?" Nicole asked.
"Nothing," Evan answered quickly.
Yet his thoughts drifted back to Shantelle's tear-filled eyes.
He pushed the memory away.
"It's over," he muttered.
"This is what I wanted."
Back at the Thompson Villa, the evening sun slowly disappeared.
Mrs. Green watched Shantelle carry her suitcase downstairs.
"Mrs. Thompson... are you leaving?"
Shantelle smiled gently.
"Not Mrs. Thompson anymore."
"Just Shantelle."
Mrs. Green's eyes reddened.
"Will you come back?"
Shantelle looked around the mansion one final time.
Every room held memories.
Some beautiful.
Most painful.
"No," she answered softly.
"There's nothing left for me here anymore."
The driver loaded her suitcase into the trunk.
As the car slowly pulled away from Thompson Villa, Shantelle looked out the rear window.
She didn't cry.
Not this time.
Somewhere between signing those divorce papers and leaving the only home she'd known for two years...
Something inside her had quietly changed.
She wasn't running away anymore.
She was finally walking toward the future she had abandoned.
Thousands of miles away...
A white-coated future was waiting for her.
A future where people would one day know her not as Evan Thompson's ex-wife...
But as the legendary surgeon...
Doctor Shant.
