The creature continued rising from the shattered depths beneath Blackwood Tower.
Stone exploded outward.
Ancient pillars cracked.
The entire fortress trembled.
Elena staggered backward as dust filled the chamber.
For a moment she could see nothing.
Then the dust cleared.
And the monster revealed itself.
It was enormous.
Far larger than any creature Elena had ever imagined.
Black scales covered its body.
Crimson cracks glowed beneath its skin like molten lava trapped inside stone.
Massive horns curved backward from its skull.
Its eyes burned with ancient intelligence.
Not animal intelligence.
Something older.
Something hateful.
Something that remembered the beginning of wars.
The monster released another roar.
The sound shattered nearby windows.
Several guards collapsed to their knees.
Even Rowan looked shaken.
Kael Vayne smiled.
Magnificent, isn't it?
Alaric's expression hardened.
You fool.
The Hollow King laughed.
Still pretending this is my fault?
The king pointed his glowing sword toward the beast.
What is it?
Kael's smile slowly faded.
Its name has been forgotten.
Most names from the First War were erased.
The creature shifted beneath the ruined platform.
Its enormous body continued emerging from the darkness.
Only half of it was visible.
Yet it already towered over everyone in the chamber.
Lyra stared in horror.
The Devourer.
Every head turned toward her.
The mage looked pale.
You know what it is?
Elena asked.
Not exactly.
Only legends remain.
Legends?
Lyra swallowed.
The stories say it consumed entire kingdoms before recorded history existed.
The room became silent.
Even Kael looked thoughtful.
The Hollow King folded his arms.
The stories are surprisingly accurate.
Alaric immediately moved.
Attack.
The command echoed through the chamber.
Guards rushed forward.
Magic ignited around Lyra's staff.
Rowan charged.
The battle began instantly.
A wave of silver energy struck the creature first.
The blast illuminated the chamber.
Ancient runes flashed.
Stone walls cracked.
The monster barely noticed.
Its enormous claw swept sideways.
Three guards were thrown across the room.
One crashed through a pillar.
Another disappeared beneath falling debris.
The third never stood again.
Rowan leaped onto broken stone.
His sword flashed.
The warrior struck one of the creature's legs.
Sparks exploded.
The blade cut deep.
Dark blood spilled onto the floor.
The monster roared.
For the first time, it felt pain.
Rowan smiled grimly.
Good.
The creature disagreed.
Its tail slammed into the wall.
The tower shook violently.
Stone blocks crashed from above.
The fortress was beginning to collapse.
Elena realized something terrifying.
The monster wasn't trying to destroy them.
It was simply existing.
And its existence alone threatened the tower.
Kael remained strangely calm.
Standing atop a ruined section of platform.
Watching.
Waiting.
Observing the chaos.
Elena noticed something else.
The Hollow King wasn't controlling the creature.
He wasn't commanding it.
If anything, he seemed cautious.
That realization frightened her more than the monster.
If Kael feared it, then everyone should.
The Devourer's eyes suddenly shifted.
Toward Elena.
The creature became still.
Its massive head lowered slightly.
Studying her.
Recognizing her.
The same thing had happened with the map.
The Mist Gate.
The shadowhound.
Everything seemed connected.
Why is it looking at me?
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Then the monster spoke.
Not aloud.
Inside her mind.
Map-bearer.
Elena froze.
The voice sounded ancient.
Older than mountains.
Older than kingdoms.
Older than language.
Yet she understood every word.
You carry the key.
Her heart nearly stopped.
What key?
The creature's crimson eyes brightened.
The final seal.
The mental connection vanished.
Elena staggered backward.
The monster returned its attention to the battle.
But the words remained.
The final seal.
A terrible realization began forming.
The prison beneath the castle.
The shattered seal beneath the mountain.
There had been multiple prisons.
Multiple seals.
And apparently one still remained.
Before she could think further, a scream echoed through the chamber.
Everyone turned.
A guard stood near the western wall.
Except it wasn't a guard.
Dark shadows spread across his skin.
His eyes turned black.
His body twisted unnaturally.
The transformation lasted only seconds.
When it ended, a Hollow One stood where the man had been.
The room froze.
Then another guard changed.
And another.
And another.
Panic spread instantly.
What is happening?
Elena shouted.
Kael looked genuinely surprised.
Interesting.
The Hollow King's expression darkened.
That shouldn't be possible.
Lyra's face went pale.
They're infected.
The answer shocked everyone.
The corruption isn't creating Hollow Ones.
It's converting people.
Several guards immediately backed away from one another.
Fear spread faster than any enemy.
Who was infected?
Who wasn't?
No one knew.
The transformed soldiers attacked instantly.
Chaos exploded across the chamber.
Guards fought former allies.
The Devourer smashed through another pillar.
The tower continued collapsing.
And somewhere inside the confusion, betrayal finally arrived.
A blade emerged from the darkness.
Fast.
Silent.
Deadly.
Straight toward King Alaric.
The attacker wore Crimson Kingdom armor.
One of the royal guards.
A trusted protector.
A loyal servant.
Or so everyone believed.
The sword pierced Alaric's side.
Time seemed to stop.
The king stumbled.
Blood stained his cloak.
The chamber fell silent.
Even the Devourer paused.
The attacker stepped back.
Removing his helmet.
No one recognized him.
His face was wrong.
Changing.
Shifting.
Like a mask melting away.
Eventually the illusion vanished.
Revealing a pale man with silver eyes.
A stranger.
One who clearly served someone else.
Kael stared.
Then laughed.
Oh, that's unfortunate.
The assassin bowed slightly.
Not for me.
The king dropped to one knee.
Rowan rushed toward him.
Majesty!
Lyra immediately moved to help.
But the assassin raised his hand.
Dark energy exploded outward.
Everyone was thrown backward.
The tower shook violently.
A massive crack raced across the floor.
Stone collapsed beneath them.
The fortress groaned.
Dying.
The assassin smiled.
The final seal is opening.
The words echoed through the collapsing chamber.
Then he vanished.
Gone.
As though he had never existed.
Alaric remained kneeling.
Blood spread across the broken stone.
The Devourer roared.
The tower began falling apart.
And Elena realized the prophecy had just taken its darkest turn yet.
