Blackwood Tower was dying.
Ancient stone shattered around them.
Massive cracks spread through walls that had stood for centuries.
Dust filled the air.
The roar of the Devourer echoed through every corridor and chamber.
And at the center of the chaos, King Alaric knelt bleeding onto the broken floor.
For a moment, no one moved.
The impossible had happened.
The immortal king had fallen.
Rowan reached him first.
Majesty!
The warrior dropped to one knee.
Blood covered his hands instantly.
The wound was deep.
Far deeper than any ordinary blade should have caused.
Lyra arrived beside them.
Move.
Her hands glowed silver.
Ancient magic flowed toward the wound.
The light touched the king's side.
Nothing happened.
Lyra's face went pale.
No.
Rowan looked at her.
What?
The blade.
The mage's voice trembled.
It's cursed.
Elena stared.
Cursed?
Not ordinary magic.
Lyra's expression darkened.
Void magic.
Something older.
Something forbidden.
The realization hit everyone simultaneously.
This attack had been planned.
Not days ago.
Not weeks ago.
Perhaps centuries ago.
The assassin hadn't simply wounded the king.
He had used a weapon designed specifically to kill someone immortal.
The tower shook violently.
A section of the ceiling collapsed.
Stone crashed into the chamber.
Several guards disappeared beneath the debris.
Screams echoed briefly before vanishing.
The Devourer continued emerging from beneath the fortress.
Its enormous body tore through ancient foundations.
Every movement destroyed more of the tower.
Alaric forced himself upright.
Leave.
Rowan looked horrified.
No.
That wasn't a suggestion.
The king's voice remained firm despite the pain.
Get everyone out.
The tower won't survive.
Neither will you.
The king met Rowan's gaze.
That is not your concern.
For the first time since Elena met him, Rowan looked angry.
That's where you're wrong.
The words surprised everyone.
Including Alaric.
The warrior stood.
My grandfather died protecting you.
My father died protecting this kingdom.
Every generation of my family has sacrificed everything for the Crimson Crown.
His grip tightened around his sword.
So yes.
It is my concern.
Silence followed.
The tower groaned around them.
The Devourer roared.
Yet for a moment, neither man looked away.
Finally Alaric nodded.
Very well.
It wasn't surrender.
But it was close enough.
Another section of floor collapsed.
The chamber tilted.
Everyone nearly lost balance.
Lyra pointed toward a side passage.
That way.
The group moved immediately.
Guards helped the wounded.
Rowan supported Alaric.
Elena followed close behind.
The corridor beyond was ancient.
Far older than the visible parts of Blackwood Tower.
The walls were covered in symbols.
Not the symbols of the Crimson Kingdom.
Something older.
Something forgotten.
The further they descended, the stronger the crimson energy became.
Eventually the corridor opened into a circular chamber.
Everyone stopped.
At the center of the room stood an enormous stone structure.
A seal.
The final seal.
Elena recognized it immediately.
Chains surrounded it.
Ancient runes glowed across its surface.
Unlike the broken seal outside, this one still functioned.
Barely.
Large cracks spread across the stone.
Crimson light escaped through them.
The structure trembled continuously.
As though something inside was trying to escape.
The final seal.
Lyra whispered.
Elena remembered the Devourer's words.
You carry the key.
A terrible feeling settled inside her.
The seal wasn't merely connected to her.
It was waiting for her.
Alaric stared at it.
No.
The king's expression darkened.
It shouldn't be active yet.
Then why is it?
Rowan asked.
No one answered.
Because everyone already suspected the truth.
The prophecy.
The map.
The gate.
The visions.
Everything had been leading here.
Suddenly the seal pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then ancient writing appeared across its surface.
Golden symbols.
Moving symbols.
Living symbols.
Elena stared.
She could read them.
Not because she understood the language.
Because something inside her translated automatically.
The Bearer Opens The Way.
Her blood ran cold.
Everyone looked at her.
That's not a good sign.
Rowan said.
No.
Elena agreed.
It's really not.
The seal pulsed again.
The chains rattled violently.
Then a voice emerged.
Not from the seal.
From everywhere.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Female.
At last.
The chamber froze.
The voice continued.
The bearer has arrived.
The runes brightened.
The air became heavy.
The world seemed to hold its breath.
Lyra stepped backward.
I know that voice.
Alaric looked at her sharply.
Impossible.
The mage's face had become completely pale.
It's her.
Who?
Elena asked.
The first queen.
Silence.
Then shock.
The first queen?
Lyra nodded slowly.
Before the Crimson Kingdom.
Before the Crown.
Before the First War.
The founder.
The voice laughed softly.
So some still remember.
The chains began breaking.
One.
Then another.
Then another.
Ancient metal shattered across the floor.
The final seal was failing.
Fast.
Too fast.
The voice spoke again.
The Devourer is only the beginning.
The room fell silent.
Even the tremors seemed to stop.
The beginning?
Elena whispered.
The voice sounded amused.
Child.
The monster beneath the mountain was never the true threat.
A crack spread across the center of the seal.
Brilliant crimson light exploded outward.
Everyone shielded their eyes.
The chains snapped completely.
The stone shattered.
And from within the light, a figure slowly emerged.
A woman.
Tall.
Radiant.
Ancient.
Wearing a crown of silver fire.
Her eyes opened.
The entire chamber shook.
The first queen had awakened.
And the Fall of the Crimson Guard had only just begun.
