Italy greeted Don Vincenzo Russo with clear blue skies and warm Mediterranean air.
Normally, arriving in Europe meant expanding business alliances or negotiating lucrative agreements.
This time, however, he had crossed an ocean for only one reason.
Chiara.
The moment his private jet landed, a convoy of black luxury vehicles carried him north toward the Bellini estate.
Information had been difficult to obtain.
Every lead had vanished almost as quickly as it appeared.
But one name kept resurfacing.
Bellini.
He studied the folder resting on his lap.
"The Bellini family," one of his advisers explained.
"Old Italian nobility."
"Large vineyards, shipping companies, investment firms, and several charitable foundations."
"Respected across Europe."
"Any criminal connections?"
"None we could verify."
Vincenzo closed the file thoughtfully.
"And Chiara?"
"No official record connects her to them."
"Interesting."
An hour later, the convoy stopped before towering wrought-iron gates bearing an elegant golden crest.
Beyond them stretched acres of vineyards surrounding a magnificent stone villa.
"This is Bellini Manor," the driver announced.
Vincenzo stepped out of the car.
Before he could approach the entrance, several well-dressed security officers politely intercepted him.
"Good afternoon, sir."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"I'm here to meet someone."
"May we ask whom?"
"Chiara Rossi."
The guards exchanged brief glances.
"There's no one here by that name."
"Tell her Vincenzo Russo has come."
"I'm afraid we cannot."
"Because?"
"Because Miss Rossi does not reside here."
Their expressions remained perfectly calm.
Professional.
Courteous.
Completely impossible to read.
Inside the villa, Marco Bellini entered the library where Chiara was reviewing artwork for the foundation.
"He's here," Marco said.
She slowly looked up.
"Already?"
"Sooner than expected."
"Where is he?"
"At the front gate."
Chiara closed the folder before her.
"Has he caused any trouble?"
"No."
"Surprisingly polite."
She smiled faintly.
"That's because he still believes he can convince me to return."
"Will you meet him?"
She remained silent for several moments.
"Not yet."
"Let him wait."
"After all... I spent ten years waiting for him."
Outside, Vincenzo refused to leave.
Nearly an hour passed.
Eventually, an elegant silver-haired gentleman walked toward the gates.
Alessandro Bellini.
"Good afternoon," he greeted calmly.
"I'm Alessandro Bellini."
"Vincenzo Russo."
"I know who you are."
"Then you know why I'm here."
Alessandro nodded.
"You wish to see my daughter."
Those words struck Vincenzo immediately.
"Your... daughter?"
"Yes."
"Chiara Bellini."
For several seconds, Vincenzo said nothing.
Bellini.
Her real surname had never been Rossi.
Ten years.
Ten years together.
And he hadn't even known her true family name.
"I see you've discovered the truth," Alessandro said.
"Apparently not all of it."
"No."
"You discovered only the beginning."
"I'd like to speak with her."
"I'm afraid that's impossible today."
"Why?"
"Because she doesn't wish to see you."
Simple.
Direct.
Final.
Vincenzo's jaw tightened.
"She won't even hear me out?"
"For ten years, she heard only you."
"Perhaps now it's your turn to listen."
With those words, Alessandro turned toward the estate.
"Wait."
The older man paused.
"Is she... happy?"
A gentle smile crossed Alessandro's face.
"For the first time in years."
He walked away.
Leaving Vincenzo standing silently outside the gates.
From an upstairs balcony hidden behind flowering vines, Chiara had witnessed the entire conversation.
She remained out of sight.
Her heartbeat remained steady.
Surprisingly...
Seeing him again didn't reopen old wounds.
Instead, she noticed how tired he looked.
How much older.
The confident Don who once seemed untouchable now appeared like a man searching for something he'd lost.
"Do you regret not seeing him?" Luca asked quietly beside her.
"No."
"Not today."
"Maybe never."
She looked toward the vineyards stretching beyond the estate.
"Some conversations happen too late."
Meanwhile, Vincenzo returned to his hotel overlooking Lake Como.
His trusted adviser entered carrying fresh reports.
"We've confirmed it."
"Chiara Rossi never legally existed before arriving in Chicago."
"Everything before that belongs to Chiara Bellini."
"Why didn't anyone know?"
"Because she erased every official connection herself."
"She protected her family exceptionally well."
Vincenzo sat silently.
How many other things had he never asked about?
Her childhood.
Her dreams.
Her family.
He had always assumed she'd tell him if it mattered.
Instead...
She had simply stopped expecting him to ask.
That realization hurt more than he expected.
That evening, Chiara attended a family dinner beneath strings of lights hanging across the garden.
Laughter echoed between the olive trees.
Her brothers argued playfully over wine.
Her father shared stories from decades earlier.
For once...
She wasn't watching the door.
She wasn't waiting for a phone call.
She wasn't expecting instructions.
She simply enjoyed being present.
Halfway through dinner, her phone vibrated once.
An unknown international number.
She stared at it briefly.
Then placed the phone face down without answering.
Marco smiled knowingly.
"Him?"
"Probably."
"Aren't you curious?"
"Not anymore."
"Curiosity kept me trapped for ten years."
"Peace suits me better."
Across town, Vincenzo lowered his own phone after another unanswered call.
He looked toward the lights of the Bellini estate visible in the distance.
For the first time in his life...
Someone had chosen a future that didn't include him.
And no amount of power, wealth, or influence could force that choice to change.
Still...
He wasn't ready to give up.
Because tomorrow...
He intended to ask for something he had never offered anyone before.
A second chance.
