The following morning, the Bellini estate awakened beneath soft golden sunlight.
Workers tended the vineyards while the aroma of fresh bread drifted from the kitchens.
It was peaceful.
A kind of peace Chiara had once believed she would never experience again.
She stood on the terrace with a cup of coffee, watching the endless rows of grapevines sway in the breeze.
For the first time in years, her mind wasn't occupied with secret assignments or encrypted messages.
She simply enjoyed the silence.
"You look different," Alessandro observed as he joined her.
"Different?"
"Lighter."
Chiara smiled.
"Maybe because I'm no longer carrying someone else's future."
"Only your own."
Before she could reply, Marco approached with a serious expression.
"He's back."
She didn't need to ask who he meant.
"At the gate again?"
"No."
"This time he requested a formal meeting."
"With me?"
"With the Bellini family."
Chiara remained silent.
After a long pause, she nodded.
"Fine."
"One conversation."
"After that... everything ends."
An hour later, Vincenzo Russo entered the Bellini estate for the first time.
Unlike his usual confident entrance into boardrooms and private clubs, today he walked with unusual restraint.
He wasn't here as the Don of Chicago.
He was simply a man asking to be heard.
The Bellini family welcomed him politely but without warmth.
Alessandro gestured toward the sitting room.
"Please."
"Thank you."
A few moments later, Chiara entered.
Their eyes met for the first time since Chicago.
Neither spoke immediately.
Vincenzo noticed how different she looked.
She smiled more easily.
Her shoulders were relaxed.
There was a quiet confidence he hadn't seen before.
She looked...
Happy.
"Hello, Vincenzo," she said calmly.
"Hello... Chiara."
"Or should I say Bellini?"
"Either is fine."
"Why did you never tell me?"
She looked at him thoughtfully.
"You never asked."
The simple answer left him speechless.
She wasn't accusing him.
She was simply stating the truth.
"I came because..."
He paused, choosing his words carefully.
"Because I made a mistake."
"Several mistakes."
"I underestimated what you meant to me."
Chiara listened quietly.
"I thought you'd always be there."
"That's exactly the problem," she replied softly.
"You thought."
"You never asked what I wanted."
"You never asked whether I was happy."
"You only assumed I'd keep choosing you."
Every sentence landed with quiet precision.
No anger.
No bitterness.
Only honesty.
"I know," Vincenzo admitted.
"And I'm asking for another chance."
"Come back to Chicago."
"We'll figure everything out."
"The engagement..."
"I'll cancel it if I have to."
The room fell silent.
Even Alessandro looked slightly surprised.
Chiara studied Vincenzo carefully.
Years ago, hearing those words would've meant everything.
Now...
They meant almost nothing.
"Do you love me?" she asked.
Vincenzo hesitated.
The hesitation lasted only a few seconds.
But for Chiara...
It was enough.
"You see?" she said gently.
"You're still searching for the right answer."
"If you loved me... you wouldn't have needed to think."
Vincenzo lowered his eyes.
For the first time in years, he couldn't argue.
"Maybe I realized it too late," he admitted.
"Yes."
"You did."
She stood and slowly walked toward the large windows overlooking the vineyards.
"For ten years... I loved you without asking for anything in return."
"I believed loyalty would eventually become enough."
"I was wrong."
"Then I left."
"And do you know what I discovered?"
"What?"
"That I wasn't heartbroken because I lost you."
"I was heartbroken because I'd lost myself."
Those words echoed through the room.
"I'm finally finding myself again."
"I won't lose that a second time."
Vincenzo slowly stood.
"So... this is goodbye?"
Chiara smiled sadly.
"No."
"Goodbye happened the night you chose someone else."
"This... is simply closure."
Neither of them spoke again for several moments.
Finally, Vincenzo reached into his pocket and removed a small velvet box.
He placed it gently on the table.
"I bought this years ago."
"I never gave it to you."
Chiara looked at the unopened box.
She didn't touch it.
"Keep it."
"It belongs to the woman you imagined."
"Not the woman I've become."
Vincenzo slowly closed the box again.
For the first time in his adult life...
He understood what irreversible regret felt like.
After thanking the Bellini family for their hospitality, he quietly walked toward the entrance.
Before leaving, he turned back once more.
"I truly hope you're happy, Chiara."
She smiled warmly.
"I already am."
Those four words hurt more than any threat ever could.
Outside, Vincenzo climbed into his waiting car.
His adviser looked at him carefully.
"Back to Chicago, Don?"
Vincenzo stared toward the villa one final time.
"Yes."
"There's nothing more for me here."
As the convoy disappeared down the winding road, Chiara remained on the terrace overlooking the vineyards.
She watched until the last vehicle vanished beyond the hills.
Marco joined her quietly.
"Are you alright?"
"Better than alright."
"I finally closed the last chapter."
That evening, Vincenzo's private jet departed Italy.
For the first time in years...
He wasn't returning home victorious.
He was returning alone.
And deep inside, he knew one undeniable truth.
Power could buy loyalty.
Money could buy influence.
Fear could command obedience.
But none of those things...
Could ever bring back a woman who had already chosen herself.
