By week six, the technical problems were disappearing.
Unfortunately, that meant Coach Irina found new problems.
"The tango still isn't working," she announced.
Nadia nearly dropped her water bottle.
"What do you mean it isn't working?"
"The steps work."
"The timing works."
"The lifts work."
"Exactly."
"That sounds like success."
"It sounds like competence."
Irina pointed toward the rink.
"Tango is not about competence."
"Then what is it about?"
"Tension."
"Again with the tension."
"Because you still don't understand it."
Nadia sighed.
Beside her, Dominic remained suspiciously quiet.
"You agree with her, don't you?" Nadia asked.
"A little."
"Traitor."
"Professional opinion."
"Same thing."
Later that day they reviewed footage.
The program looked clean.
Sharp.
Technically impressive.
Yet something was missing.
For the first time, Nadia could actually see it.
"We look like coworkers," she admitted.
"Exactly," Dominic said.
"What's wrong with coworkers?"
"Nothing."
"Then?"
"The audience needs to believe the story."
Nadia stared at the screen.
"And they don't."
"Not yet."
That evening neither talked much during training.
Not because they were upset.
Because they were thinking.
Trying to solve a problem that couldn't be fixed with technique alone.
And that was unfamiliar territory for both of them.
