The glowing doorway pulsed with silver light.
Everyone turned toward Sable.
Magnus gave her an encouraging nod.
"This trial belongs to you."
"Remember... the Temple doesn't test your strength."
"It tests your heart."
Sable took a slow breath.
Then she stepped through the archway.
The stone door closed instantly behind her.
"Sable!" Jaxon called.
Only silence answered.
Inside...
She found herself standing in the middle of a peaceful village.
Children laughed as they chased one another.
Women prepared food outside small cottages.
The smell of fresh bread filled the air.
Her heartbeat slowed.
"This place..." she whispered.
She recognized it.
It was her childhood home.
Before everything changed.
"Sable!"
A familiar voice called her name.
She turned slowly.
Standing near the old oak tree were two people she had dreamed about countless times.
Her mother.
And her father.
Alive.
"Mom..."
"Dad..."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Her mother smiled warmly and opened her arms.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Without thinking, Sable ran toward them.
Her father embraced her tightly.
"You've grown into such a brave woman," he said.
"We've missed you every day."
Sable could barely speak.
"I... I thought I'd never see you again."
"You don't have to lose us," her mother whispered.
"Stay here."
"This life can be yours."
"No more war."
"No more pain."
"No more loneliness."
For one beautiful moment...
Sable wanted to believe it.
She wanted to stay.
Then...
She noticed something.
Her parents never asked about her life.
Never asked how she survived.
Never mentioned the Order.
Everything felt... perfect.
Too perfect.
"You're not really my parents," she said quietly.
The smiles on their faces remained unchanged.
"We can be."
"All you have to do..."
"Forget the outside world."
"Forget Jaxon."
"Forget your mission."
"Stay with us forever."
The entire village suddenly froze.
The children stopped laughing.
The birds became silent.
Only her parents continued smiling.
"This isn't real," Sable whispered.
"Reality only brings suffering," her father replied.
"Here, you'll always be happy."
"No," Sable answered.
"Happiness built on lies isn't happiness."
"It's a prison."
The warm sunlight faded.
Dark clouds gathered overhead.
"If you leave..."
"You'll lose everything again," her mother warned.
"Maybe."
"But those choices will be mine."
"Not an illusion's."
Sable stepped backward.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I love you both."
"Enough to let you go."
"Goodbye."
The illusion shattered like glass.
The village disappeared.
The ancient voice echoed through the chamber.
"Second Trial... Passed."
A doorway of silver light appeared before her.
Moments later...
The stone doors reopened.
Sable walked back into the central chamber.
Jaxon immediately crossed the room.
"Are you alright?"
She nodded, wiping away the remaining tears.
"It showed me my parents."
"I had to let them go... all over again."
Without thinking, Jaxon gently took her hand.
She didn't pull away.
Instead...
She squeezed his hand tightly.
The silver mate bond shimmered softly around them.
Magnus smiled.
"The Temple is responding."
"Your bond grows stronger with every trial."
Only one doorway remained.
"Sacrifice."
The largest of the three stone arches.
Unlike the others...
Its runes glowed crimson instead of silver.
Cedric frowned.
"That's strange."
"Every record described silver runes."
Magnus slowly approached the final doorway.
His expression became grave.
"Because this trial changes for every generation."
"No two chosen pairs face the same sacrifice."
Jasper rested a hand on his sword.
"Then we should be prepared for anything."
"You can't prepare for this one," Magnus replied.
"The final trial doesn't ask what you're willing to fight."
"It asks..."
"What you're willing to lose."
Before anyone could respond...
The Temple shook violently.
A deafening roar echoed through the mountain.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
"Someone's forcing their way inside!" Ethan shouted.
Magnus's face turned pale.
"Impossible..."
"Unless..."
"The Order has found another entrance."
Far below the Temple...
Hidden within the mountain's ancient tunnels...
Lady Selene stood before a massive stone gate.
She placed her hand upon an ancient symbol.
"Forgive me, old friend," she whispered.
"But destiny cannot wait any longer."
The hidden gate slowly opened.
Behind it...
Thousands of forgotten warriors made entirely of stone opened their glowing silver eyes.
