The Temple shook with increasing violence.
Massive cracks spread across the ancient ceiling.
Dust and fragments of stone rained onto the floor.
"The hidden entrance has been opened," Magnus said grimly.
"We don't have much time."
"Then let's finish the final trial," Jaxon said.
"We can't fight for the Crown if the Temple rejects us."
Magnus nodded.
"Go."
"We'll hold anyone who enters."
Jaxon looked at Ethan.
"Keep everyone alive until we return."
Ethan smiled confidently.
"You know I will."
Jaxon turned toward Sable.
"Ready?"
She looked at the crimson doorway.
"No."
"But I'm going anyway."
He offered a small smile.
"Good answer."
Together...
They stepped through the final arch.
The stone doors slammed shut behind them.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Neither could see the other.
"Sable?"
"I'm here."
Her voice echoed somewhere nearby.
Then...
A brilliant silver light flooded the chamber.
They found themselves standing in opposite corners of a circular room.
Between them floated a massive crystal glowing with moonlight.
The ancient voice returned.
"The final trial is Sacrifice."
"Only one may leave."
The words echoed endlessly.
Sable's heart stopped.
"What?"
"One life..."
"For another."
"Choose."
Chains of silver light suddenly wrapped around Sable's wrists.
At the same time...
Black chains surrounded Jaxon.
Neither could move.
"This is impossible," Jaxon shouted.
"There has to be another way."
"Every choice demands a price," the voice answered.
"One soul must remain."
Sable struggled against the chains.
"No!"
"Take me."
"Let him go."
"Denied."
Jaxon pulled against his restraints.
"Then take me instead."
"Release her."
"Denied."
Silence followed.
Only the heartbeat of the glowing crystal filled the chamber.
Jaxon looked across the room.
Sable's amber eyes met his.
There was fear in them.
But something else as well.
Trust.
"Listen to me," Sable said softly.
"No."
"Listen."
"If one of us has to survive..."
"It should be you."
"Winter Moon needs its Alpha."
"The packs need a leader."
"I won't let you finish that sentence," Jaxon interrupted.
"Why?"
"Because I'm done losing people I care about."
"I couldn't save my parents."
"I couldn't save my first mate."
"I couldn't stop years of war."
"But I can save you."
"Jaxon..."
"No."
"You once asked if I trusted you."
"I do."
"With my life."
"And that's exactly why I won't trade yours for mine."
His wolf stepped forward inside his mind.
'We're making the same choice.'
'Together.'
Jaxon closed his eyes.
"Moon Goddess..."
"If this is truly the price..."
"Take my life."
"Let Sable live."
The black chains tightened around him.
His knees hit the floor.
"No!" Sable screamed.
Tears streamed down her face.
"Please!"
"Take me instead!"
"He deserves happiness!"
"He's suffered enough!"
"Take everything I have!"
"Just don't take him!"
The crystal suddenly blazed with blinding silver light.
The chains around both of them shattered.
The ancient voice filled the chamber once more.
"Sacrifice is not measured by death..."
"But by love freely given."
"Neither sought to save themselves."
"Each offered their life for the other."
"The Trial... is complete."
A beam of moonlight descended from the ceiling.
It surrounded both of them.
Warm.
Peaceful.
Gentle.
The silver marks on their wrists began to glow.
The mate bond awakened completely.
Jaxon felt Drax roar with joy.
At the same moment, Sable felt a wolf she had never known existed stir within her soul.
"What... is happening?" she whispered.
A soft feminine voice answered from everywhere at once.
"Your wolf has awakened."
A graceful woman dressed in flowing silver robes appeared before them.
Her eyes shimmered like the full moon.
Power radiated from every step she took.
Jaxon and Sable instinctively bowed.
"Moon Goddess..."
She smiled kindly.
"Rise."
"You have both carried pain that was never yours to bear."
"Yet neither of you allowed suffering to harden your hearts."
She looked toward Jaxon.
"You forgave betrayal without becoming cruel."
Then toward Sable.
"You sought justice without surrendering to revenge."
"That is why you stand here today."
She gently placed one hand over each of their hearts.
"From this moment..."
"Your mate bond is complete."
"Not because fate demanded it..."
"But because you chose one another."
Their silver bond burst into radiant light, surrounding the chamber.
At that exact moment...
A deafening explosion echoed from outside.
The Temple trembled violently.
The Moon Goddess turned toward the sealed doorway.
Her peaceful expression became serious.
"The Temple has been breached."
"The true enemy has arrived."
"Go now."
"The fate of every wolf pack depends on what you do next."
The chamber doors slowly opened.
Beyond them...
The sounds of battle echoed through the ancient Temple.
