Three days after Hudson left London, my investigator called again.
"Briar, there's been a development."
I sat up straighter.
"What happened?"
"We traced the original payment you asked about."
My fingers tightened around my phone.
"And?"
"It wasn't your mother or father."
I frowned.
"Then who was it?"
There was a long pause.
"Your father discovered the payment two weeks ago. He confronted Hudson about it."
"Hudson denied knowing anything."
"But the account belonged to a private trust controlled by your mother."
My breath caught.
My mother.
The woman who had spent my entire life telling me that Tatum was simply more fun than I was.
The woman who had defended every cruel prank.
The woman who had blamed me when my wedding was ruined.
I couldn't understand why she would do something like this.
Then the investigator sent me the remaining documents.
There were emails between my mother and Tatum.
The first one was dated six months before my wedding.
[Briar has always been too dependent on Hudson. If she marries him, she'll leave us behind.]
Another followed.
[Tatum, you understand her weaknesses better than anyone. Make Hudson realize that Briar isn't the woman he thinks she is.]
My hands began to tremble.
The messages continued for months.
My mother had encouraged Tatum to create situations that made me look jealous, unstable, and overly sensitive.
She had even paid for the first round of social media promotions.
The wedding prank wasn't spontaneous.
It had been planned long before the wedding day.
The pregnancy lie was Tatum's idea.
But my mother had approved it.
I read the final message three times.
[Once Hudson sees how difficult Briar is, he'll eventually choose Tatum himself.]
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had wondered why my own family never defended me.
Now I knew.
They hadn't misunderstood me.
They had deliberately turned me into the villain of my own life.
That evening, I received a call from my father.
I almost ignored it.
But something inside me wanted to hear his explanation.
I answered.
"Briar."
His voice sounded broken.
"We need to talk."
"I already know."
Silence.
"Your mother never meant for things to go this far," he finally said.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"She planned my humiliation for months."
"She wanted to separate me from Hudson."
"And you watched her?"
"I tried to stop her."
"When?"
He couldn't answer.
"You both watched me lose my wedding, my career, and my baby."
"And not one of you came to the hospital."
His breathing became shaky.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't bring my child back."
There was nothing left to say.
I ended the call.
That night, I received another message.
This one was from Hudson.
[I found out about your mother's involvement.]
[I confronted her.]
[She admitted everything.]
[I should have protected you.]
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
[I'm going to testify against her and Tatum.]
[Even if it destroys my family.]
For the first time, I believed he was finally doing the right thing.
But it was too late.
The next morning, my investigator sent me one final file.
It was a recording of Tatum and my mother arguing.
Tatum was furious.
"You promised Hudson would leave Briar!"
My mother's voice was cold.
"I promised nothing."
"You said he would hate her by the end of the wedding!"
"He doesn't hate her. He still loves her."
Tatum went silent.
Then she whispered:
"Then I'll make sure he has no reason to ever forgive her."
I froze.
The recording continued.
"What are you going to do?" my mother asked.
Tatum laughed softly.
"Something she'll never recover from."
The recording ended.
I sat there staring at the screen.
My miscarriage hadn't been part of their original plan.
But after everything that happened, they had still tried to make me believe it was my fault.
That was the moment something inside me finally broke free.
I wasn't going to run anymore.
I wasn't going to hide in London.
I was going back home.
Not to save my relationship.
Not to win Hudson back.
I was going back to make sure the people who destroyed my life finally faced the truth.
