I returned home three days later.
Not as the abandoned bride who had left in the middle of the night.
I came back as someone who no longer needed anyone's approval.
The moment I stepped out of the airport, I saw Hudson waiting near the arrivals gate.
He looked exhausted.
But I didn't stop.
He followed me a few steps before speaking.
"Briar, please."
I turned around.
"Why are you here?"
"Because I promised I'd tell the truth."
He held out a folder.
"Everything is in here. The payments. The messages. The recordings. Tatum's confession."
I took the folder without looking at him.
"Then let's finish this."
We went straight to the law office where my investigator had arranged a meeting.
Tatum and my mother were already there.
The moment Tatum saw me, her face went pale.
My mother stood up.
"Briar, listen to me before you do anything."
"I've listened to you my entire life."
I placed the folder on the table.
"I'm done listening."
My father sat beside her, looking older than I remembered.
The lawyer opened the first file.
Bank transfers appeared on the screen.
One after another.
Payments from my mother's private account to Tatum.
Tatum immediately shook her head.
"That doesn't prove anything."
The lawyer played the recording.
Her own voice filled the room.
"Then I'll make sure he has no reason to ever forgive her."
Tatum's face turned white.
My mother closed her eyes.
For once, neither of them had an excuse.
"It was supposed to be harmless," my mother whispered.
I stared at her.
"Harmless?"
"You wanted me to humiliate myself in front of everyone."
"You wanted Hudson to believe I was unstable."
"You watched me lose my job."
"You watched me lose my child."
My mother's lips trembled.
"I never wanted you to lose the baby."
"But you knew your daughter was being pushed to the edge, and you did nothing."
She couldn't answer.
Tatum suddenly stood.
"This is all because of her!"
She pointed at me.
"Everyone always chose Briar! Hudson loved her. Your parents protected her. She had everything!"
I looked at her quietly.
"So you decided to destroy me because you couldn't stand watching someone else be happy?"
"I loved Hudson!" she screamed.
"And he never loved you the way you wanted him to."
Her expression cracked.
Hudson stepped forward.
"Tatum, stop."
She stared at him.
"You still defend her?"
"I'm not defending her."
His voice was painfully calm.
"I'm finally admitting what I did to her."
He looked at me.
"I failed you."
"I let everyone convince me that your pain was a joke."
"I chose comfort over loyalty."
"And when you needed me most, I chose someone else's feelings over yours."
I didn't respond.
He turned toward Tatum.
"But none of that gives you the right to destroy her."
Tatum began crying.
"Hudson, please. I did all of this because I loved you."
"No."
He shook his head.
"You did it because you wanted to possess me."
The room fell silent.
The lawyer closed the folder.
"Based on the evidence, formal charges will be pursued."
Tatum's crying stopped.
My mother reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
"Don't."
She lowered her arm.
My father whispered my name.
"Briar, we're still your parents."
"And I was still your daughter when you chose her."
I walked toward the door.
Hudson followed me outside.
The evening air was cold.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said quietly,
"I know there's nothing I can say that will fix what happened."
"You're right."
He nodded.
"But if you ever need anything, I'll be there."
I looked at him for a long moment.
"I hope you learn to be there for the people you love before you lose them."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I will."
I turned away.
This time, I didn't feel guilty for leaving him behind.
I had spent years believing that walking away meant I had failed.
Now I understood.
Sometimes walking away was the only way to finally save yourself.
I returned to London the next morning.
There was one chapter left to close.
Not with Hudson.
Not with Tatum.
With myself.
