I thought leaving Boston would finally put the matter behind me.
I was wrong.
Two days after my visit with Lily, Daniel called me.
“Nora, we have a problem.”
I sat down at my desk.
“What happened?”
“Someone sent the school and the trust administrator copies of the smart lock records.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“We don't know yet.”
I already had a pretty good idea.
Sloane.
She had finally understood that keeping quiet would only make her part of the deception.
Daniel continued.
“The records show overnight access during Graham's custody periods. The administrator is asking why the household arrangements were different from what was disclosed.”
“What does that mean for Lily?”
“Probably nothing immediate. But Graham will have to explain the discrepancy.”
I leaned back in my chair.
For four years, Graham had told me everything was about protecting Lily.
Now his own decisions were forcing him to explain himself to the people who actually had authority over her trust.
That evening, I received an email from Sloane.
She had attached a short letter.
I opened it.
She admitted that she had lived in Graham's house during his custody weeks and that he had represented the arrangement as necessary for Lily's stability.
She also admitted that she had known about our engagement.
But there was one sentence that made me stop.
“I believed he would eventually marry you, and I believed that meant I would have to leave.”
I read it twice.
So even Sloane had understood what Graham refused to admit.
There had always been a choice.
He had simply never made it in my favor.
A second email arrived.
This one was from Graham.
“You had no right to involve other people.”
I didn't answer.
Another message appeared.
“You could have come to me instead of trying to destroy everything.”
I finally replied.
“I didn't destroy anything. I stopped protecting a secret you created.”
His response came several minutes later.
“You don't understand what I was trying to protect.”
I looked at the screen.
“I understand perfectly. You were protecting the life you wanted while expecting me to accept the life you assigned me.”
No response came.
The next morning, the trust administrator requested a formal meeting with Graham.
Daniel told me I didn't need to attend.
I agreed.
I didn't want revenge anymore.
I wanted distance.
That afternoon, my manager stopped by my desk.
“Nora, do you have a minute?”
I followed her into a conference room.
She closed the door and smiled.
“The client loved your presentation.”
I smiled.
“That's good to hear.”
“They want you to lead the next phase.”
For a moment, I simply stared at her.
“Are you serious?”
“Very.”
She handed me a folder.
“This is a major account. You'll be working directly with their executive team.”
I opened the folder.
The project was exactly the kind of work I had once dreamed about before my life became centered around Graham's family.
“I'd like to do it.”
“I thought you might.”
When I returned to my desk, I looked at my phone.
There were no new messages from Graham.
For once, I wasn't waiting for one.
I opened the project folder instead.
The future in front of me was uncertain.
It was also mine.
And that was worth more than anything Graham had ever promised me.
