Ember POV:

The rain didn't begin as a gentle drizzle.

It arrived like a punishment from the heavens.

Within seconds, I was drenched.

Cold water soaked through my clothes and ran down my skin as I dragged my suitcase along the long driveway.

Every step sent a bolt of agony through my injured knee.

The gravel crunched beneath my feet.

The storm swallowed everything else.

I looked back one last time.

The Pack House stood tall against the dark sky.

On the second-floor balcony stood Axel.

My balcony.

My room.

My life.

All of it belonged to Willow now.

He watched me without moving.

Without speaking.

Without helping.

The rain plastered my white shirt against my skin.

I shivered violently.

Fresh blood seeped through the bandage around my knee and mixed with the rainwater streaming down my leg.

I reached out through the Mind-Link.

Please.

Just a ride to the station.

Just this once.

I felt the mental barrier slam shut instantly.

Blocked.

Again.

Axel simply stood there with his arms crossed.

Safe.

Dry.

Untouched by the storm.

Unlike me.

My vision began to blur.

Blood loss.

Exhaustion.

Shock.

Everything was catching up to me.

My grip loosened.

The suitcase slipped from my hand.

I stumbled.

Then fell.

Sharp gravel tore into my palms.

Pain exploded through my knee as I crashed onto the wet ground.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

I couldn't breathe.

I couldn't even gather enough strength to stand.

The storm raged around me.

I pressed my cheek against the cold stones.

Maybe this was it.

Maybe I would die here.

In the driveway of the house my father built.

The house where nobody wanted me anymore.

The front door opened.

"Axel!" Willow called.

"She fell. Should I take her an umbrella?"

I lifted my head slightly.

Willow stood in the doorway holding a large black umbrella.

For anyone watching, she looked compassionate.

Kind.

Concerned.

A saint.

"No," Axel answered immediately.

"Leave her there."

His voice carried through the rain.

"She's doing it for attention."

"If you go outside, you'll catch a cold."

"Get inside."

Willow hesitated for exactly one second.

Then she allowed him to guide her back into the house.

The balcony door slid shut.

The curtains closed.

And I disappeared from their world.

Completely.

I laughed weakly.

The sound was bitter.

Maybe this was what freedom looked like.

Being abandoned so completely that nobody even pretended to care anymore.

Then headlights appeared.

Bright beams sliced through the storm.

An unfamiliar black SUV sped up the driveway.

It wasn't one of the pack vehicles.

There was no Silver Moon crest.

No official markings.

The vehicle came to a screeching stop inches away from me.

The driver's door opened immediately.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dangerous.

Even through the rain, power radiated from him.

Not the loud, crushing authority Ryker used.

This was something older.

Something darker.

A predator standing at the top of the food chain.

He approached without hesitation.

The storm seemed to bend around him.

He knelt beside me.

Then his hand touched my shoulder.

Everything changed.

Heat exploded through my body.

A violent surge of energy raced through my veins.

The freezing cold vanished instantly.

My breath caught.

My senses sharpened.

The world became brighter.

Louder.

More alive.

And then I smelled him.

Pine forests after snowfall.

Dark chocolate.

Ozone before lightning.

The scent wrapped around me like a warm blanket.

Deep inside my soul, something stirred.

Sera.

My wolf.

The wolf who hadn't spoken in ten years.

The wolf who had hidden in silence ever since the fire.

She rose to her feet.

Not weak.

Not broken.

Strong.

Fierce.

Alive.

Then she roared.

MINE!

The force of it shook me.

My eyes flew open.

I stared into storm-gray eyes flecked with silver.

The stranger froze.

His pupils expanded.

His chest rose sharply.

"Mate," he growled.

The word vibrated through the air.

Through my skin.

Through my soul.

Mate.

The impossible became reality.

I recognized him immediately.

Everyone knew who he was.

Derek Nightshade.

The Shadow Alpha.

Leader of the Shadow Pack.

The most feared Alpha on the continent.

The man powerful enough to make rival packs tremble.

His expression darkened as he looked at my injuries.

Fury flashed across his face.

Before I could react, he lifted me effortlessly into his arms.

As though I weighed nothing.

"Put her down!"

The balcony door slammed open.

Axel rushed forward.

For the first time all day, panic filled his voice.

"She belongs to the Silver Moon Pack!"

"You have no right to take her!"

Derek slowly looked up.

Rain streamed down his face.

His expression remained terrifyingly calm.

"She is bleeding," he said quietly.

"And you are watching."

Every word landed like a hammer blow.

"She is being punished!" Axel shouted.

But he took a step backward.

Even he knew he was outmatched.

Derek ignored him.

His gaze returned to me.

"Do you want to stay?" he asked softly.

"Little wolf?"

I looked toward the house.

Toward the family that had abandoned me.

Toward the people who had stolen everything from me.

I thought about Moonlight Grass.

My room.

The festival.

The birthday they forgot.

The years of rejection.

The years of pain.

"Take me away," I whispered.

"Please."

Something softened in Derek's eyes.

He nodded once.

Then carried me to the SUV.

He placed me gently onto the leather seat.

"You can't take her!" Axel shouted.

"Ryker will declare war!"

Derek paused beside the vehicle.

Slowly, he looked up at the balcony.

His eyes were ice.

"Tell Ryker," he said calmly,

"that if he wants her back, he can come to the Shadowlands and try to take her."

His lips curved into a dangerous smile.

"But tell him to bring a coffin for himself."

Silence followed.

Even the storm seemed to pause.

Then Derek shut the door.

The sound echoed like a final goodbye.

A few moments later, he slid into the driver's seat.

Warm air filled the vehicle.

The scent of pine and storm clouds surrounded me.

For the first time all day, I felt safe.

Derek glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

"Rest," he said quietly.

"You're safe now."

"I've got you."

"No one will hurt you again."

My eyes burned.

Not from pain.

Not from the storm.

But from the strange sincerity in his voice.

As the SUV pulled away, I looked back one final time.

Axel remained on the balcony.

Standing motionless in the rain.

Watching me disappear.

Watching his control slip away.

Watching me leave forever.

And for the first time in years...

I didn't look back with regret.

You finished
