Ember POV:
I woke to warmth.
For a few seconds, I thought I was dreaming.
The freezing rain was gone. The pain in my knee had dulled to a distant ache. Soft leather rested beneath me, and a gentle heat filled the vehicle.
Then reality returned.
The storm.
The Pack House.
Axel.
Ryker.
Willow.
And Derek.
The Shadow Alpha.
My mate.
The word still felt impossible.
I slowly opened my eyes.
The SUV was speeding through a mountain highway. Dark pine forests stretched endlessly outside the windows.
"You're awake."
Derek's deep voice filled the silence.
I looked up.
His storm-gray eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.
"How long was I asleep?"
"Three hours."
"Three?"
He nodded.
"Your body was exhausted. You lost a lot of blood."
Embarrassment flooded me.
"Sorry."
One corner of his mouth lifted.
"For almost dying?"
I blinked.
"I guess when you say it like that, it sounds ridiculous."
"A little."
The smallest laugh escaped me.
It felt strange.
I couldn't remember the last time someone had made me laugh.
Derek seemed surprised too.
His gaze softened.
"That's better."
"What is?"
"The smile."
Heat crept into my cheeks.
I looked away.
Outside, snow-covered mountains appeared in the distance.
"Where are we going?"
"Home."
"The Shadowlands?"
"Yes."
"People say it's dangerous."
"People say a lot of things."
That was true.
Most packs treated Derek like a monster.
A ruthless Alpha.
A cold strategist.
A man who never showed mercy.
Yet he had stopped his car for a bleeding stranger.
Nothing about that felt monstrous.
"Why did you stop?" I asked quietly.
His grip tightened slightly on the steering wheel.
"Because I smelled blood."
"That's not the real reason."
Silence.
For a moment, only the sound of the engine filled the vehicle.
Then he spoke.
"Because I recognized your scent."
My heart skipped.
"You knew?"
"Not immediately."
"When I touched you."
"And then?"
"Then my wolf nearly tore the car apart trying to reach you."
I stared at him.
The image was ridiculous.
Derek Nightshade.
The most feared Alpha in the country.
Losing control.
Because of me.
"You don't know me," I whispered.
"I know enough."
"No, you don't."
My voice cracked.
"You don't know how broken I am."
"You don't know what happened to my wolf."
"You don't know why my own family hates me."
The words poured out before I could stop them.
Years of pain.
Years of loneliness.
Years of pretending I was okay.
Derek listened quietly.
He didn't interrupt.
He didn't judge.
He just listened.
Nobody had done that before.
"Then tell me," he said softly.
My throat tightened.
I wanted to speak.
I wanted to tell him everything.
Instead, tears filled my eyes.
"I don't think I can."
Derek reached across the center console.
His fingers brushed mine.
"Then don't."
"Not today."
"You survived today."
"That's enough."
Something inside my chest cracked.
Not painfully.
Gently.
Like ice melting after a long winter.
For the first time in years, I felt safe.
Hours later, the mountains opened.
A massive city appeared beyond them.
I froze.
"What is that?"
Derek smiled.
"The Shadowlands."
I had expected an isolated pack territory.
Cabins.
Forests.
Maybe a few buildings.
Instead, an entire city stretched before me.
Glass towers reflected moonlight.
Bridges connected sleek buildings.
Technology and nature existed side by side.
It looked more advanced than the capital.
"This is a pack?"
"Technically."
"Technically?"
"We prefer innovation over tradition."
I stared through the window.
No wonder every Alpha feared Derek.
This wasn't just a pack.
It was an empire.
The SUV entered a private compound.
Security gates opened instantly.
Guards saluted as Derek passed.
"Alpha."
"Alpha."
"Alpha."
Respect.
Not fear.
Respect.
I noticed the difference immediately.
The vehicle stopped outside a large estate.
The front doors opened before we even stepped out.
A woman in a white lab coat rushed forward.
"Alpha!"
Then she saw me.
"Goddess above."
"What happened to her?"
"Long story," Derek replied.
"Short version?"
"The Silver Moon Pack should be ashamed."
The woman's expression darkened instantly.
"Understood."
"Medical wing. Now."
Within minutes, I was sitting in a private treatment room.
Advanced medical equipment surrounded me.
Machines I'd only seen in journals.
"You're a researcher?" the woman asked.
"Yes."
"Interesting."
"How?"
"Because the Alpha personally requested your research files before we even arrived."
I blinked.
"He did what?"
"He spent the entire drive reading your work."
My face heated.
Nobody had ever cared about my research before.
"Your Silver Poison findings are impressive," she said.
"Actually, they're brilliant."
I stared at her.
"You read them?"
"Of course."
"They're good."
"Very good."
A strange sensation filled my chest.
Pride.
I couldn't remember the last time someone praised my work.
"Alpha Derek says you'll be staying here."
"For how long?"
"As long as you want."
The words hit me harder than they should have.
As long as you want.
Not because I was obligated.
Not because someone pitied me.
Because I was welcome.
Hours later, after treatment and fresh bandages, I stood on the balcony of my new room.
The city lights glittered below.
It was beautiful.
Behind me, the balcony door opened.
Derek stepped outside.
"How's the knee?"
"Better."
"Good."
We stood in comfortable silence.
Then he spoke.
"You're safe here, Ember."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why are you being so kind to me?"
Derek stared at the city below.
"Because somebody should have been."
My breath caught.
No one had ever said that before.
Not once.
The wind carried the scent of pine and snow.
For the first time in years, tomorrow didn't feel frightening.
It felt possible.
