Hart found Evelyn Vale before sunset.
She lived in a small coastal town nearly two hours outside Lakehaven, far from the restaurants, lawyers, and family gossip that surrounded the Bellamys.
I went with Hart and Graham.
We left Owen with a trusted sitter arranged through Hart's office. I refused to let him anywhere near another confrontation until I knew exactly what Adrian was capable of.
Evelyn opened the door herself.
She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and sharp eyes that immediately settled on Graham.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Evelyn said, “You finally came.”
Graham looked stunned.
“You knew I would?”
“Marcus always said you would eventually discover what she did.”
My heart began to pound.
We entered a modest living room filled with old photographs.
On one wall was a picture of Marcus standing beside a much younger Celeste.
Between them stood Graham.
They had once been friends.
Evelyn poured tea but didn't drink any herself.
“Marcus didn't steal from you,” she said.
Graham lowered his head.
“I know that now.”
“No. You don't know the worst part.”
She opened a wooden box and removed several envelopes.
“Celeste forged the financial records. Marcus discovered it and confronted her.”
Graham stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because Marcus had discovered she was moving money from the family restaurants into accounts she controlled.”
I looked at Hart.
This was exactly the kind of evidence we needed.
Evelyn continued.
“When Celeste realized Marcus knew, she told him that if he exposed her, she would destroy him.”
“And Tessa?” Graham asked.
Evelyn's expression softened.
“Marcus loved that little girl. He knew she was his daughter from the moment she was born.”
She handed Graham a photograph.
It showed Marcus holding an infant.
On the back was a handwritten note.
My little girl. I will protect her even if she never knows my name.
Graham's hands began to shake.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Evelyn looked at him sadly.
“Because Marcus begged me not to.”
“He believed Celeste would hurt Tessa if the truth came out.”
I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Then why did Celeste suddenly start caring so much about bloodlines?”
Evelyn looked directly at me.
“Because Tessa isn't the only secret.”
The room went silent.
She opened another envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of a medical record.
The patient's name was Celeste Bellamy.
The date was thirty-two years ago.
I read the heading.
Pregnancy termination procedure.
My eyes widened.
Evelyn said quietly, “Celeste was pregnant before Tessa was born.”
Graham stared at the page.
“Whose child?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“That's what Marcus never discovered.”
Hart immediately photographed the document.
Then Evelyn pulled out one final envelope.
“Marcus left this for Tessa.”
“He told me not to give it to her until someone tried to destroy the Bellamy family with a lie.”
I looked at the date on the envelope.
It had been written eight years ago, shortly before Marcus died.
My hands went cold.
The timing was too precise.
Someone had known this day would come.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What's inside?”
She slid the envelope across the table.
“Proof of who really controls the Bellamy family trust.”
Graham reached for it.
But before he could open it, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed Celeste.
He answered on speaker.
Celeste's voice came through immediately.
“Graham, don't open anything Evelyn gives you.”
Graham froze.
Celeste continued, “If you do, you will destroy this family.”
I looked at Hart.
She looked back at me.
Celeste knew exactly where we were.
And that meant someone had been watching us.
