Six months had passed since I became the Luna of Silvermoon.
And somehow, life had become completely different.
The pack had changed.
The council had changed.
Even Falcon had changed.
But the biggest change was within me.
I no longer felt like someone waiting for permission to belong.
I belonged because I chose to.
My healing clinic had also expanded.
With the authority granted to me as the First Moon Alpha, I established independent medical centers throughout several territories.
No healer could be punished for treating an enemy pack.
No patient could be denied emergency care because of rank.
The elders initially resisted.
Then they realized something.
The First Moon wasn't interested in ruling through fear.
I wanted a stronger world.
A fairer one.
Falcon supported every reform.
He never once told me what to do.
He asked.
He listened.
And when we disagreed...
He learned to argue with me instead of ordering me.
One morning, I found him standing outside my clinic.
"You're early," I said.
"I couldn't sleep."
"Why?"
"You have another council meeting today."
"I know."
"They're going to challenge the emergency healer law again."
"Let them."
"You're not worried?"
"No."
He smiled.
"That's why I love you."
I stopped walking.
"What?"
Falcon's expression remained calm.
"I said I love you."
"You can't just say things like that."
"Why not?"
"Because I wasn't prepared."
"I'm willing to wait."
I stared at him.
There had been a time when I believed love meant surrendering part of yourself.
Now I understood that real love should make you feel more like yourself.
Falcon had learned that.
So had I.
"I love you too," I said quietly.
His smile was immediate.
Warm.
Genuine.
"Good."
"I've been waiting a long time to hear that."
"You deserved to wait."
"I know."
Later that day, we entered the council chamber together.
The elders were already waiting.
The oldest among them stood.
"Luna Sloane, we've received requests from three neighboring territories."
"They want access to the new healer network."
"Approve them."
The elder nodded.
"And there's another matter."
"What is it?"
"Several young Alphas are questioning whether the First Moon should have authority over them."
I remained calm.
"Then tell them this."
"I don't want authority over anyone who doesn't choose to follow me."
"My role is to protect the balance, not destroy it."
The elder smiled.
"Exactly as the ancient records describe."
After the meeting, Falcon and I walked through the palace gardens.
The moon was already rising.
He stopped beside the silver tree where we'd first spoken privately.
"Do you remember this place?"
"Of course."
"You told me you needed time without me."
"I did."
"I thought you'd never come back."
"I almost didn't."
"What changed?"
I looked at him.
"You did."
"Not immediately."
"But you learned."
"You stopped trying to possess me."
"You started trying to understand me."
Falcon nodded.
"You taught me that love isn't ownership."
"And you taught me that respect isn't enough without honesty."
"Fair."
He reached into his coat.
I raised an eyebrow.
"What are you doing?"
"I have something for you."
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a silver crown.
But it wasn't the ancient First Moon crown.
It was smaller.
Simpler.
Covered in tiny diamonds.
At the center was a moonstone.
I stared at it.
"Where did you get this?"
"The jewelry shop."
I laughed.
"You're joking."
"No."
"You went back there?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because this was the first place where you showed me exactly who you were."
"The woman who refused to be humiliated over a crown."
"I thought you deserved one chosen by someone who respected you."
I took the crown from the box.
"You know I don't need it."
"I know."
"Then why give it to me?"
"Because this time, I want you to choose whether you wear it."
I smiled.
"That's better."
He gently placed the crown in my hands.
"Will you?"
I looked toward the moonlit gardens.
Then at Falcon.
"Yes."
He smiled.
But before he could place it on my head, a familiar voice interrupted.
"Congratulations."
I turned.
Julia stood at the end of the garden.
She looked different.
Humbler.
No expensive jewelry.
No arrogant smile.
No Silvermoon badge.
She was under supervision and had been ordered to remain away from the council.
Falcon's expression hardened.
"You're not supposed to be here."
"I know."
Julia looked at me.
"I came to apologize."
I studied her silently.
"For what?"
"Everything."
"The crown."
"The lies."
"The manipulation."
"I wanted your life because I thought it would make me happy."
"Instead, I destroyed my own."
I said nothing.
Julia lowered her head.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"You shouldn't."
"I know."
"But I hope someday you can stop hating me."
I looked at her carefully.
"I don't hate you."
Julia looked surprised.
"I don't have time to hate people."
"I've got a pack to protect."
"A clinic to run."
"And a life to live."
Julia's eyes filled with tears.
"You're different."
"I had to become different."
She nodded slowly.
"Goodbye, Sloane."
"Goodbye, Julia."
She left the garden.
Falcon looked at me.
"You didn't have to forgive her."
"I didn't."
"Then what did you do?"
"I let her go."
He nodded.
"That's better."
I looked at the crown in my hands.
"You know what I find funny?"
"What?"
"The woman who once tried to steal my crown ended up losing everything while I realized I never needed one."
Falcon smiled.
"That's why she could never beat you."
I placed the new crown on my head.
It felt light.
Not because it meant nothing.
Because I had chosen it.
No council had forced it upon me.
No Alpha had demanded it.
No family alliance had required it.
I wore it because I wanted to.
Falcon stepped beside me.
His hand found mine.
"Luna."
"Alpha."
We smiled at each other.
The moon rose higher above Silvermoon.
The pack lights shimmered in the distance.
The woman who had once walked into a jewelry shop and been called a peasant was now standing at the center of the entire werewolf world.
But she hadn't become powerful because she wore a crown.
She had become powerful because she learned she could walk away from anyone who refused to respect her.
Falcon squeezed my hand.
"Ready?"
"For what?"
"Whatever comes next."
I looked toward the horizon.
"Always."
The First Moon had awakened.
The Luna had chosen her path.
And this time, Sloane Lunebom wasn't walking beneath anyone's shadow.
She was leading the way.
